I noticed recently that she seemed a bit lighter. She had her booster today and she's lost 400g in a year.
She's not underweight (last year she was deemed overweight) she is now ideal weight. Howevwer she is probably eating a bit more than she used to.

So i immediately think thyroid. But vet said her coat was too shiny/ good and she didn't seem to show any other signs like seeking out warm places or being always on the go.

I have to take her back in 4 weeks and if she has lost more weight the investigations/blood tests etc will start.

We got her in 2010 and Cats' Protection guessed she was 3 or 4 then so I guess she's in the right age bracket to have some issues. Doesn't make it any easier though, I have a feeling it won't be good.

My cats both showed weight loss but had fantastic coats. They lived to 21 and 20 respectively having developed hyperthyroidism at around 12 years of age. It's very common.

Both my cats had operations but the condition came back after several years, so we switched to oral meds but you can also get a cream now to rub in the ear if taking tablets is a problem (my girl would hold the tablet and spit them out around the back of the sofa -
it was a week before I realised).

If you don't go for an operation, I second Rudgie's advice about buying a prescription from your vet and ordering meds online. Your vet is obliged to offer this service so there should be no issue, especially when the cost savings are huge - about £60 a month in our case.

At your cat's next appointment, ask the vet to check his/her heart rate as hyperthyroidism can cause heart murmurs if left undetected. Sounds like you've caught it early but this check should be routinely done as part of ongoing treatment. But please be assured that feline hyperthyroidism is increasingly common and very treatable.

Best of luck sparkling & sparklingcat. Like feezles, my boy was done as a day case and was home the same evening. He isn’t with us anymore but he lived to 21.

Sparklingbrook · 06/02/2018 15:26

You are all so lovely.

She has just come in and had a chat with me and a cuddle. I haven't said anything about Thursday Wink Vet says I will be there for half an hour and will get some results there and then.

I really hope it's thyroid as I haven't psyched myself up for other eventualities yet.

Hi, No the vets were not funny at all its just like getting a prescrption from the Drs.They have to write one they cant refuse because your not buying off them.

ToadOfSadness · 07/02/2018 18:09

Ask for T3 and T4 testing, sometimes it doesn't show up if it is borderline.

I hope she is OK.

Sparklingbrook · 07/02/2018 20:19

I got the impression that some blood results would be within half an hour but others would need sending off maybe. I will ask.

Thanks.

The tension goes on a bit longer. Got her into the carrier, about to put her in the car and the vets ring to say surgery is running v late could we go tomorrow?

So we are booked in for 9.30am tomorrow...

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2018 10:38

Bloods taken. Results possibly tomorrow now. Sad

Fingers and paws crossed. I know our vets can do some bloods "in house" pretty quickly but some have to be sent away-I think T4 is one.

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 09/02/2018 11:05

keeping everything crossed for you. Even if it is thyroid, it can be managed. OldGrumpy has had hyperthyroidism for approaching 3 years now?

one tip, is that you can ask to take your cat to be weighed by the vet nurse. My vets practice does this for free. So between blood tests, if i start to think he is loosing weight, i can just pop him round.

it takes 24-48hr for t4 results for us.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2018 11:25

Thanks both. I am a wee bit worried now because she went straight out as soon as we got back and hasn't returned yet. Hmmmm. Hope she's sulking somewhere.

I think as part of the plan she's on at the vets I can take her down for some checks every now and again, so I think getting into the habit of having her weighed wouldn't be a bad thing.

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 09/02/2018 11:57

When you think she's hungry, put her favourite food out. I'm sure she will come skulking back.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 09/02/2018 12:15

I weigh Harry at home between vets visits. I weigh in weekly anyway (I'm supposed to be on a diet) so he comes on the scales with me if he's around.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2018 13:45

She's home. Smile Fast asleep on the sofa.

Weighing myself and the cat together might be good.

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 09/02/2018 15:32

glad shes home and sleeping soundly.

Sparklingbrook · 09/02/2018 23:47

I got in from work not long ago and fed her. DH told me after that was Felix pouch no.4 since he got home at 5pm.

Something is definitely amiss.

OP posts:
QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 10/02/2018 19:08

does sound like hyperthyroidism. If it is, there is no reason to panic.

Sparklingbrook · 10/02/2018 19:32

I am thinking that too. No news today.

OP posts:
QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 11/02/2018 10:21

Hang on in there, you will have answers soon. My hyper thyroid cat is just a much of a loveable pest as he always was..... Though yes, he is a bit more expensive now.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 10:37

If it turns out to be thyroid and she had surgery/tablets will she slow down her eating and gain weight back?

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 11/02/2018 14:14

Yes. Exactly that.

Sparklingbrook · 11/02/2018 14:15

Smile Fingers crossed.

She's been like a kitten this morning, wanting to play and very chatty.

OP posts:
QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 11/02/2018 21:35

Hyperactivity is another symptom of hyperthyroidism

Sparklingbrook · 12/02/2018 21:57

Hello all. Finally got the results today. She has an overactive thyroid (no surprise) but also chronic kidney disease. Both conditions are manageable according to the vet. But for how long? Sad
