Cat ate cake....HELP!

DCat has eaten a large chunk of birthday sponge cake...do I need to ring energency vet or wait and see if it disagrees with him?! He generally has a stomach of steel and is a renowned food thief (once came home with a pork chop which an unsuspecting neighbour had obviously left out to defrost Blush) but I don’t know if cake is too sugary?!

I've never heard of cats dying from a surfeit of cake. I wouldn't worry.

He will likely want to drink a lot to dilute the sugar. Our dog ate a huge about of haribo then drank and drank until he spewed then was fine. Make sure plenty of fresh water is available and look out for piles of sick.

There's probably more sugar in cat food.

He will be fine and nothing to worry about (as long as he doesn't make it a regular habit!!) Naughty kitty! I hope he blew out the candles first :P

One of my cats was caught helping himself to Eve's pudding and custard and he was fine. My sister's cat enjoyed some boiled fruit cake, he lived until he was about 18.

My cats partial to a mince pie (the sugary Christmas kind, not the meaty one) if he can get his mits on it. Also been known for the kids to share a biccy with him. Never done him a jot of harm but keep an eye on him jic.

The Lovely Jenny loved a bit of cake, she would always appear and sit pleadingly when cake was about. Victoria sponge was her favourite!

The beast on the other hand would go to great lengths to get his paws on baked beans, or curry.

They have their quirks.

My cat eats everything, loves cake, cheese, fruit, yohurt. No need to worry. I had one that used to go crazy for doughnuts. They have all lved to be over 18, some 20.

I once left two lovely Victoria sponges cooling on a cake rack in the kitchen. Came back having popped out to find a mangled pile of scraps and a very guilty-looking tabby hiding in the corner trying to look innocent despite the crumbs liberally adorning her whiskers.

We laughed. No harm was done. Except no cake for tea for us that night.

My tom loves a curry- literally fights for the leftovers. He is surprisingly robust albeit a bit overweight...thankfully he hasnt discovered cake yet.

I'm sure he'll be fine as a one off. As a kid my cat licked butter icing off half a cake and had no adverse effects.
Our now departed dear old girl who was diabetic and had IBD ate some cake and bread one day after we had people over.
The litter tray the next day wasn't pleasant and she drank gallons. I was due to do a glucose curve for the vet so I held off for a week!!

My cat regularly steals cake and is none the worse for it. He/she might be sick, but that's all that is likely to happen.

One of ours goes wild for bara brith which is a type of Welsh fruit loaf. We can't have it in the house! The other loves a piece of kebab meat!

One of ours has stolen the following from the bin and the kitchen cupboards (before we managed to make them all cat proof)

  • roast potatoes
  • cooked pasta
  • fresh bread
  • cooked eggs
  • a cooked chicken leg (this one scared us but she was fine)
  • carrots
  • as well as every type of meat or seafood

I'm sure your cat will be fine

Thanks! He’s stolen things before but never anything so sugar loaded! I’m an anxious cat mummy! Thanks for reassurance!

My cat loves nothing more than cake. She's opened a pack of Welsh cakes and nibbled all 6. She also ate half a lovely spiced bun that I'd been salivating about all day. We now keep cake in the microwave, as she know how to open cupboards and drawers Grin

Good job the Welsh cakes are locked up sillyswimmer, I think raisins can be quite dangerous for cats' kidneys
