We can no longer keep our cat, how do we go about rehoming?

Unusual pedigree cat...

My DS has developed an allergy to him. It's been going on for over a month now (at first just though let it may be a cold) however he's fine when cat not around but within minutes of him coming into Room his eyes swell up, stream and he can't stop sneezing.

He's a 4 yo Bengal. Beautiful large cat. Shall I go to social media or is there an organisation?

Do not go on social media. There are specific pedigree rescues but I don't know anything about them. Have you put 'bengal cat rescue uk' into Google?

Failing that try the rescues in your area. You can find them on www.catchat.org

ineedamoreadultieradult · 28/01/2018 19:11

Do not go on Social Media a Bengal will be snapped up by someone just interested in its looks, not it's welfare. There is probably a specialist Bengal rescue but if not somwone like Cats Protection etc is what you need.

LouiseBrooks · 28/01/2018 19:13

Don't consider social media, you need to go to a proper rescue or the breeder you got him from.

Contact these people, they will advise you.

Do not go on social media. Do not go on gumtree. I wont say why, but people are using cats for something to do with dogs.

Ring Cats protection or your local cat rehoming centre.

In the meantime can your DS take piriton medicine?

Have you tried using a furminator comb? They get rid of loads of hair.

Could you ask at work if anyone would rehome?

ClaudiaD13 · 28/01/2018 19:18

You could try the breeder you got from. I re-homed my pedigrees from a breeder, they had been returned due to allergies. I had been enquiring about the kittens she had but instantly fell in love with the older cats.

thecatneuterer · 28/01/2018 19:21

And yes, in the meantime rubbing Petal Cleanse wipes over the cat is supposed to reduce allergens

Nomorerainplease · 28/01/2018 19:24

I have been desperately looking for a Bengal so I would take him! I relayed this may be considered social media however..
My son is allergic to moggies but is fine with Bengals (a neighbour has one). He is also ok with Siberian and Russian Blues but they are sooo expensive (over £500 for a kitten ).

There are welfare sites for rehoming pedigrees, I will try and post a link. I search them regularly!

Nomorerainplease · 28/01/2018 19:24

Typo. realise

Call around your local catteries. I rehomed our cats with a lovely family whose cat (same breed, passed away) also used to stay at the same cattery we used. Years later I still get photo updates on the cats, which is lovely! The family is truly lovely and I couldn't have asked for a better home for them.

Wolfiefan · 28/01/2018 19:28

Isn't there a clause in your contract that says to contact the breeder in the first instance?
And I'm sorry. Having to rehome must be awful.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/01/2018 19:28

St France s Persian Rescue in North Yorkshire would probably take him. They take other breeds as well as Persians.

AnyFucker · 28/01/2018 19:30

Where in the country are you ?

auserinamillion · 28/01/2018 20:04

He's not an actual Bengal, I shouldn't of wrote that... He's a Toyga, very very similar but a little more unusual (Bengal = spots, Toyga is stripes)

I'm in Bolton

Wolfiefan · 28/01/2018 20:06

Toyger?
What does the breeder say?

Myddognearlyatethedeliveryman · 28/01/2018 20:08

My friend's dh was allergic to their new supposedly hypo allergenic grand a piece kittens!!
Dr gave him 3 months of prescription allergy pills until his system stopped reacting. All good now.
Maybe worth an appointment?

auserinamillion · 28/01/2018 20:24

Toyger! Yes! He was a rescue cat, not breeder x

Wolfiefan · 28/01/2018 20:34

He's gorgeous. What did the rescue say? (They also tend to have a contract that says you need to contact them if you can't keep the cat.)

ThriceUponATime · 28/01/2018 20:35

The breed rescues often help rehome related breeds, so still worth contacting them.

auserinamillion · 28/01/2018 20:40

I've not contacted them yet. We just made the decision this aft that enough is enough. Jut awful as we love him to bits, will ring them tomorrow

retirednow · 28/01/2018 20:41

Where did you rescue him from, would you be happy for him to go back there to be homed again. Do not use social media or gum tree like other posters said, only go to reputable rescue centres. He is very pretty and I have never heard of a toyger.

toomanycreambuns · 28/01/2018 20:47

He's gorgeous!

Definitely contact one of the rehoming centres. We have Blue Cross near us and they are excellent.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 28/01/2018 20:48

Why not try your DS on some anti allergy meds first? That seems the logical step.

retirednow · 28/01/2018 20:54

Do you have a blue cross rehoming centre near you. Don't put your child on anti allergy meds without discussing this with the doctor.
