Cat food Sachets are a ripoff

Why are people buying sachets when they are about 4 or 5 times the price of tins? Smaller supermarkets are stopping selling tins. Why are people falling for this non recyclable con? Makes no sense to me.

OP posts:

  1. Because the food my cat likes is in pouches and not tins
  2. Because even if he did like it he couldn't eat a tin in one go
  3. Because pouches are easier to store than tins
RainingOutside99 · 24/01/2018 16:12

Are the sachets not recyclable? I thought they were!

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 24/01/2018 16:17

My cat likes the Aldi ones. They aren't stupidly priced, and we make up for it with good quality dry cat food on top. The tins were smelly once open, and then you have to wash and store them to recycle them. I'm not saying it makes me a Good Green Person, but lifes too short.

Vinorosso74 · 24/01/2018 16:18

Perhaps the food in the sachets is better quality? Less cereal fillers and higher meat content? Personally I think most pet food sold in supermarkets is pretty shit.
As for the packaging, I have no idea if the sachets are recyclable but I think packaging on all sorts of things should be changed to recyclable or biodegradable.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/01/2018 16:19

I'd rather feed Harry a Natures Menu pouch than the rubbish in some tinned food!

BIWI · 24/01/2018 16:21

Because pouches are more convenient - one serving per pouch.
Because tinned food has to be kept in the fridge, and smells horrible!

I agree with you re recycling though.

thecatneuterer · 24/01/2018 16:25

I feed most of mine with tinned food, but if I didn't have such a ridiculous number of cats then I would give them sachets - because they much prefer them!

I also agree about the recycling though.

SleepFreeZone · 24/01/2018 16:57

Because when has a cat she’s wouldn't touch anything that came from a tin.

Praisebe · 28/01/2018 03:13

Ha! I noticed this too op so i bought the tins not realising that its chunks not flakes like the pouches so the cat refused to eat it. Pouch texture is different to tinned texture according my my 🐱

BikeRunSki · 28/01/2018 03:19

Because my cat has a very small appetite and it would take her several days to finish a tin.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 28/01/2018 19:15

Ok, so we've told you why Op. Any thoughts? Or have you just abandoned the thread as it appears?

Rudeolf · 28/01/2018 19:17

My Cat has one a day (£10 for 44 days)

She has Applaws dry food for protein.

Praisebe · 28/01/2018 20:55

Also the pouches are recycled mine go in the plastics recycling

Boatsonthewater · 29/01/2018 10:15

one pouch or two a day? My kitten has two a day and dry food. Is that too much? Science Plan.

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 10:17

Felix as Good as it Looks (fish flavour only) does not come in tins. So it's pouches for Sparklingcat.

Ginorchoc · 29/01/2018 10:21

I don’t because I have 3 cats but how do you get the gravy ones out without leaving bits behind and getting on your fingers! Tesco have just sent me some samples again I find them so messy!

Iamnotacerealkiller · 29/01/2018 10:25

Seriously, buy good quality dry food (e.g. royal canid) from amazon. our cat was a gravy lover and 18 years old and he prefers this stuff and would choose it over any soft food. you can buy it in 6/7kg bags. less wastage, less smelly, if he leaves it, it doesn't go off. utter revelation for us. we just have a big tub that we decant it into every 3 months or so.

BIWI · 29/01/2018 10:26

I agree, @Ginorchoc - I avoid the gravy ones for that very reason!

IntoTheFloodAgain · 29/01/2018 10:27

@Ginorchoc I push everything out of corners whilst the sachets are still closed, then spoon the leftover bits out. It doesnt get everything, but nearly.

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 10:28

The worst ones are those cat soup sachets. You rip the top off, get covered in it and about a teaspoon of food comes out onto the plate. Confused

italiancortado · 29/01/2018 10:29

Because convenience.

The same reason people buy melon chunks and pre chopped vegetables. It's easy.

Theresnonamesleft · 29/01/2018 10:33

Oh the soup ones. Picked up those by accident.
Poured the puke looking stuff into their dishes. They smelt it, they prodded it, they stared at me with a wtaf look, and they screamed at me for days.

Anyway The pouches are for convenience. When I can be bothered with tins I buy those little ones.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/01/2018 10:56

I checked and the Natures Menu ones aren't recyclable unfortunately.

Iamnotacerealkiller feeding only dry isn't great for cats, especially males. Harry was on dry only for years until he broke his jaw but I'd never do that now. I also don't think of Royal Canin being particularly good quality. He has James Wellbeloved, which isn't brilliant but is better than a lot of dry.

Bluelonerose · 29/01/2018 11:01

If you can get my 2 cats to change their cat food I will be forever grateful Grin

Mine are fussy to the point if they haven't actually seen me putting the food in their bowl they won't eat it Hmm

Welcome to cats Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 29/01/2018 11:55

I think that's worse than Harry! Saying that, if DH feeds him he won't eat it straight away but if I feed him his head is straight in the bowl.
