Cat food Sachets are a ripoff

Why are people buying sachets when they are about 4 or 5 times the price of tins? Smaller supermarkets are stopping selling tins. Why are people falling for this non recyclable con? Makes no sense to me.

I find that CharlieAlphaTango will eat dry food if I'm not there to wait on him.

That film is about pet food in the US. Is the UK any better regulated?

Olives seem to be ok in small amounts too

My vet's advice was as much meat as possible, no grains. Ignore anything about 'natural ingredients' if that means herbs and carrots or whatever - as she said, it's not as if cats naturally eat carrots, that's just on to appeal to the owner not the cat.

If the ingredients has a high ash content, that's bad.

Kittens need to eat kitten food wish vet would explain this to my kitten who just wants to eat old cat's urinary dry food

Taurine, omega oils, vitamins, pre and probiotics is good esp for senior cats (what I'm looking for)

I'm currently feeding Bozita wet and Sanabelle dry to the kittens who are v happy, and James Wellbeloved wet + vet urinary dry food to older cat who is less impressed. Hunt for her favourite food continues.

I love Zooplus for so many options for grain-free food, much cheaper than highstreet and all delivered to your door.

The UK is the same as the USA it's all globally owned mostly By Mars but Colgate own a few brand names too

Harry likes his daily dose of berries in his chicken and goose pouch!

Hi Life were useless when Harry was diagnosed with kidney problems. I contacted them, Meowing Heads, Natures Menu and James Wellbeloved to find out the phosphate levels in their food and they couldn’t tell me! JW told me I had to phone an 0845 number but MH and NM were brilliant and gave me all information I needed.

Considering Hi Life are supposed to be a family business and know what’s in the food I was very disappointed.

Yes but foods here don't always have the same additives/ ingredients as the US.

By Mars but Colgate own a few brand names too I agree about getting away from these big brand company's, so why run down the likes of Hi Life then?
What would you suggest?

I just suggested two perfectly good high quality brands Hmm and no hi life isn't a family owned business its a corporate like many others they just like to pose as a standalone group when they aren't

Unlike human food the pet food industry is run on global law rather than country to country so what you find in UK brands is the same as what's in their USA counterparts. And anything that has "meat and animal derivatives" in the title isnt a good food for any animal

Interesting thread. My cat only eats 1 pouch a day. Of Whiskas. I’m well aware that gram for gram they’re £££, but there’s no wastage and no smell, so I was happy with them. BUT. I am NOT happy about the environmental impact of the pouches themselves. I’m going to try cans. But if a no-go (due to pickiness, or the stink in the fridge), what should I try next? Cat is 7, neutered female and has free access to outdoors in daylight. Really want her on a mix of wet and dry and will stick with the go cat for the dry for now.

Mine is so picky that I'm afraid the environment has to take second place to making sure he eats!

If you switch from pouch to tin, buy one tin first. Otherwise you may find that you have wasted money.

Kitten likes to eat the adult food (butchers) old big cat likes to eat the kitten food. Old small cat will take whatever the other two leave her with.

Old big cat gets some tinned mackerel teach day to hide her medication in (had to be smelly so she doesn't notice).

Old Big cat has been known to eat popcorn, pasta, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, cheese. She can also get into a pouch in under a minute. She's a canny one.

We got Carny once. Oh God, it looks like roadkill chopped into a tin. And the smell not just the food but the poo it produces. No thanks.

Our posts crossed, as up until that point you hadn't said what you were feeding you cats, oh apart from Dreamies that are owned by Mars. All your posts were just running other peoples choices down. BTW, Carney has udder in it.

My cat has tins. Mainly because his preferred brand only comes in tin form. We have some of those plastic lid things which helps keep it fresh and stops the smell.

Didn't think of the recycling aspect.

Disagree with those saying the quality of tinned food isn't as good. The brand we use is much better than the shite sold in supermarkets.

They are a rip off. I give tins. I cover the openness tins with a lid from the pringles tub. It is a good fit and stops the fridge smelling of cat food. Also the lid is fine in the dishwasher.
I get the sloppy cat chunks with gravy from Lidl and mix some dried food in.
The empty tins are recycled.

RicottaPancakes · 30/01/2018 16:29

Kittens don't need need kitten food. It's quite a new invention anyway. Apart from the size of the chunks it's quite similar to adult cat food. We give ours Waitrose pouches, or Sainsbury's tins and some high quality :-) dry food, can't remember the name of it now! We also give them raw meat when we have some and I remember. They love that.
