Do cats make friends with other cats?

Another cat has started visiting our 11 month old kitten in our garden. I saw them yesterday interacting with each other. The body language from visiting cat was friendly (I have witnessed some very unfriendly behaviour from an aggressive Siamese visitor).

They had a bit of a sniff and then my kitten followed the other one up the garden. The other older cat kept turning back to check my kitty was following. My DH said they had been ‘playing’ the day before but didn’t expand on what they were doing.

My kitty seemed a little cautious and had her head lowered in a slightly submissive position. However she did seem interested in the visiting cat.

I keep reading about how solitary cats are and just wondered if it is possible for them to socialise with non-litter mates?

My two cats are best pals and aren't littermates. They have lived together for over a year though now which might be why! But they have always gotten on.

Ollivander84 · 01/01/2018 00:39

Mine socialises occasionally. My neighbour has two unrelated cats who are incredibly close!

NorthernLurker · 01/01/2018 00:40

Yes some do. Mine isn't keen.

Weezol · 01/01/2018 00:41

I think they do. My friend's cat has a buddy who calls around for him, then the two of them play out together.

DramaAlpaca · 01/01/2018 00:43

My cat is best of friends with my neighbour's cat. They hang out together in the garden & play chasing games. It's very cute to watch.

We had two unrelated cats from kittens and they were always together, slept so you couldn’t tell one from the other. Unfortunately we lost the boy at seven months and the girl dislikes the new boy we got. However, the NDNs cat calls round for our boy and they play together for hours.

Greenshoots1 · 01/01/2018 00:44

some domestic cats do, I think its "tame" behaviour, not wild behaviour. I also think that with my cats, although they get on mostly fine and sleep next to each other, and play together, that depends pretty much on nobody challenging the pecking order.

I came home the other day to three cats snuggled together asleep on the sofa. I only own two cats Grin seems some can have friends without spitting, hissing & attaching!

prettypaws · 01/01/2018 00:44

I have one that's desperate for a friend, she even follows little dogs as they walk past the drive. Sadly no other cats (or dogs) want to befriend her Sad. I have another older cat that will groom, cuddle and play chase with her, but not as often as she'd like.

LibbyLongtree · 01/01/2018 00:55

Thought about getting another kitten pretty paws?

Yes, they make friends. Domestic cats can be pretty social. Or hissing, spitting, biting jerks. There's not much in between.

Thursdaydreaming · 01/01/2018 01:03

My two cats (not litter mates) don't cuddle each other but they groom each other and play together. So it seems like they are friends.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2018 01:05

Sparklingcat hates all other female cats, they are not allowed anywhere near. Two male cats are allowed for some reason. But no other cat is allowed onto the patio or in the house they have to stay on the grass.

She's hard work. Grin

Rubyroop · 01/01/2018 01:05

Yes one of mine made friends with a neighbours cat when they were both kittens. They'd always be in the garden playing together. They did seem to drift apart a bit as they got older (maybe 1 and a half/2yrs old) and then we moved house anyway

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2018 01:07

Op- 11 months isn't really a kitten- she is spayed, isn't she??

Leviticus · 01/01/2018 01:08

I have two male litter mates who have only been outside for a month but they seem to be making friends with the neighbourhood cats. I'm so pleased, I was worried they'd be scrapping.

9GreenBottles · 01/01/2018 01:09

One of my boys used to hero worship the cat two doors along and followed him around. My other boy started coming into our garden and made "friends" with my cats before deciding to move in. In reality, my cats were a bit overwhelmed by how big he was, and he was so laid back that he didn't seem to notice.

Another small young cat started coming into the garden and he made friends with laid back cat but the others all chased him away.

Cats can make friends but it all depends on their personality.

calmandbright · 01/01/2018 01:20

I ended up with a semi feral cat from a pub who pretty quickly decided to live next door. He had a bromance with my other neighbour's cat and they both moved in with another neighbour together and have lived happily ever after Grin

ProseccoMamam · 01/01/2018 01:32

I had a tom cat, he was very feral. Wouldn't let you stroke him, growled like a dog, never meowed and fought every single cat he came across. My friend who lived down the street bought a kitten and my cat and her new cat made the best of friends. They were both male an used to walk the streets together side by side like an adorable little gay cat couple. Honestly it was the cutest thing ever.

Hookedoncatnip · 01/01/2018 06:54

She is spayed @BertrandRussell. She does seem to be the type who would want to socialise.

It’s so nice to hear stories about cats getting on. My girl has had an awful time with another cat who thinks he rules the gardens.

OP posts:
Hookedoncatnip · 01/01/2018 07:17

She’s quite a small cat which is probably why I still think of her as a kitten.

Here's Leroy nose-booping his mate 😊.

Mate is the local "stray", inverted commas because although he has nowhere official he lives he's better looked after than a lot of cats that do 🙄.

The one at the window is the little girl from up the road calling for him 😂.

Yes. Our cat when I was a teenager had a best friend called Oscar. They played and slept together. Oscar spent a lot of time at our house. It was really sweet.

LucheroTena · 01/01/2018 09:24

Yep, my boys are litter mates and the bestest of friends. They also made friends with NDN male (who is a 'fighter' and regularly at vets with torn ears and abscesses) and the three of them go off together, lie in the sun piled up, etc. Other NDN cat is female and hates them all though.

Wolfiefan · 01/01/2018 09:39

Our old boy was best mates with the neighbour's cat. He used to call round to get him to come out to play!
