Do cats make friends with other cats?

Another cat has started visiting our 11 month old kitten in our garden. I saw them yesterday interacting with each other. The body language from visiting cat was friendly (I have witnessed some very unfriendly behaviour from an aggressive Siamese visitor).

They had a bit of a sniff and then my kitten followed the other one up the garden. The other older cat kept turning back to check my kitty was following. My DH said they had been ‘playing’ the day before but didn’t expand on what they were doing.

My kitty seemed a little cautious and had her head lowered in a slightly submissive position. However she did seem interested in the visiting cat.

I keep reading about how solitary cats are and just wondered if it is possible for them to socialise with non-litter mates?

This is the cutest thread ever! I want my boy to have a friend now.

Vinorosso74 · 01/01/2018 09:51

When I was a kid we got a female kitten, friends a few doors down had a boy a few months older. Until she was spayed and allowed out they used to gaze longily at each other through the window. They played together but then suddenly stopped being friends once they were about 4 or 5.

My cat is friends with the cats next door. He’s the youngest and he has been hanging around with them since he was a kitten.
He drives the bonkers, jumping on them and pouncing when they aren’t looking.

But apart from that, they’re all good pals.

We're looking to get a cat or 2 now we've moved to a more suitable house (garden/away from busy roads) and recently came across this gorgeous little story of feline friendship. Needs making into some sort if film I reckon! www.leedsfelinefriends.org.uk/adopt-a-cat-page-4

iloveeverykindofcat · 01/01/2018 10:04

Mine are more like siblings than friends. Zara treats Bibi like her naughty little sister (they aren't related). She'll groom her in a sort of bossy, let-me-do-it-you'll-mess-it-up sort of way, and will tolerate Bibi's rough play-style for a little while before jumping up on a high surface and giving one short sharp hiss, exactly like an older sibling saying 'that's enough now, you're roo rough'. They never fight (except on the rare occasions an outside cat has made contact and put them both in a rage) and sometimes snuggle up.

PersianCatLady · 01/01/2018 10:06

This is so lovely.

sashh · 01/01/2018 10:09

Mone visits several houses that may or may not have cats (YesItsMeIDontCare she looks like your visitor).

There is also 'Bastard cat' who will let himself in to eat her food and make himself at home, since it has been cold and I don't have windows open he yowls for her.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 01/01/2018 10:15

Ours have a friend who pops round for a play or a sleep on our bed.

Our 2 littermates tolerate each other with the odd hiss and spit but our older cat is in a love/hate relationship with one of my girls.

BertrandRussell · 01/01/2018 10:19

Mine are litter-mates and barely tolerate each other. Armed neutrality describes their best days....

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 01/01/2018 10:21

It's such a shame because when we got them they were so close and used to play and sleep all snuggled up together but now they have at least one spat a day. Little cows.

tinytemper66 · 01/01/2018 10:22

I have two cats. The younger cat 8 months old tries to play with our old cat who is almost 11. The older cat hisses at her on a daily sometimes an hourly basis. They will sleep on the same bed but both are not really sleeping.
Youngest just wants to play but I also notice she can annoy oldest cat but touching her tail. However oldest cat bosses as soon as she spots the youngest. They do 'box' but no fur flying. We have had the little one since the end of August.
Both are spayed females.
The oldest cat has never been friendly whilst the little one loves cuddles.

MsHomeSlice · 01/01/2018 10:27

my two are litter mates and rub along nicely....idiotcat does cause his sister much consternation though by pretending to be out when she tries to check if he is in or no

He also goes visiting, he like the neighbours' houses....they have no cats, and he goes across the road too...they do have cats, I presume they are friendly enough, I know the lady across the road likes him and laughs about him and her cats.

ForalltheSaints · 01/01/2018 10:29

The last cat my parents had was friendly with one from a neighbour. They would sit in the garden quite happily.

When my parents' cat died, the other one started pining and not eating, and only accepted the cat's death (and eating again) after my mum let her into her house so the cat could establish that indeed the cat had died.

Hookedoncatnip · 01/01/2018 10:48

Such lovely stories and photos @YesItsMeIDontCare

I was feeling bad about just taking one kitten. I would love her to have a little friend to hang out with. I have been a bit skeptical after hearing how unsociable cats can be.

Keep the friendship stories coming if you have them!

it depends on the cat, my current cats have no friends and only tolerate each other. My ginger cat Tom had a little girl cat friend up the road, she would often come into the house and they would chase each other and play fight for hours.
They used to curl up on my bed together and Tom would lick her head. It was very sweet.

Oldraver · 01/01/2018 10:56

Ernie will aggressively see off any cat that dares to enter his garden. Apart from 'Limpy' a really od version of himself..he fusses and sniffs around him.

We haven't seen Limpy in a while though

thecatneuterer · 01/01/2018 10:57

I've posted this before.

One of my male ferals fell in love with the boycat down the road belonging to an old lady. So much so that he moved in there. I occasionally went to visit. They were inseparable - really - where one was the other was. They also slept curled up together, groomed each other and, rather disturbingly (particularly it seems for the old lady) spent a lot of time dry humping each other Grin.

In an ending worthy of a romantic novel, after many years together one died of old age. The other one then died suddenly of natural causes only three weeks later. I like to think it was at least partly because he couldn't live without the love of his life sad.

There are lot of friendships formed in my current cats too. Bradley used to be in love with Stacey, but she left him for Marmite (a girl cat) and Bradley fell in love with Humphrey. Sadly both Marmite and Humphrey died last year and Bradley and Stacey are back together again.

Oh and Napoleon is besotted with Charmaine. And I could go on.

I got another kitten when my girl was ten months and it was the best thing i ever did. Shes always loved company and i felt dreadful going to work. They are now 9 months and 19 months and do everything together. The first couple of weeks where touch and go as the big one wanted to mother her all the time. I have no regrets and appart from insurance i havent noticed a price change.

They are both mates with the old boy next door but his young sister hates my two and never goes out now. I feel bad about that.

selfishcrab · 01/01/2018 11:21

Mine were litter mates and as long as she-cat was the boss all was great. We moved when they were about 13 and he-cat made friends with the street stay, street cat had lived under a car for about 10 years and was tatty, unfriendly and huge! But street-cat and he-cat were the best buddies, he-cat was soft, gentle and the cuddliest fur ball ever, street-cat who would rip your arm off changed and in time became our cat, he moved in and he was the sweetest cat ever.
She-cat then made friends with the street bully! They 2 sets of 'friends' would cuddle up at different ends of my sofa it was so sweet.
We moved and it was agreed that I would take stray and bully :)they all became great pals, 5 years on I only have she-cat left and she won't tolerate any cat/dog/bird in her garden but seems quite ok with the squirrels.

thecatneuterer · 01/01/2018 11:32

That's a sweet story selfishcrab

Icequeen01 · 01/01/2018 12:03

My boys are best friends with the cat next door and can usually be found together when outside. Here they are on top of a neighbour's shed. Archie and Angus (the gingers) are mine and their tabby friend is Hamish.

I'm not crying you are.

Icequeen01 · 01/01/2018 15:35

What a lovely/sad tail (see what I did there 😀). It always surprises me how many male cats seem to have romances with the same sex cat but not so the females.

Now where are those tissues, I appear to be getting a cold ☺️
