Cat litter - how often do you change it and has anyone found something to rival Catsan?

Just wondering how often you change your cat trays - we have 2 cats. And has anyone found anything as good as or close to Catsan but cheaper - we have got through a 20 litre bag in 4 days which is going to work out as over £20 a week on cat litter.

Also has anyone used a dyson handheld to vacuum up the bits that go out of tray or will that break it?

Thanks.

Cat's Best, buy it at the local market. Costs a lot but lasts ages and almost completely eliminates smells. Soft on paws. Poo is flushed and clumps put in bin for compost. I find a dustpan and brush the most effective way of clearing around the trays.

laudanum · 07/12/2017 04:55

Silicon litter is far better, it works by absorbing odours and can last up to a month depending on how often your cat uses it.

laudanum · 07/12/2017 05:00

anti bacterial litter crystals

I was totally skeptical about them lasting as long as folks said they would, until I tried it and realised it did.

InappropriateGavels · 07/12/2017 22:07

I tried wood pellets and it was a complete failure - my cat started sneezing and became unwell after only having them in the tray for a couple of days. He then refused to use it as his toilet, so I had to go back to the Catsan really quick before he either started using a corner somewhere (we don't let him out when it's dark) or kept holding it in.

I recently changed my little guy's diet because he has colitis, he's no longer crapping during the middle of night and seems to be doing it exclusively outside as well, which is preferable for our noses, so the litter tray now only gets changed about once per week. He does let me know if it needs changing, which is very kind of him.

I've tried loads, picture below is by far the best. I only had to change it every 5 weeks and does not smell.

Obviously poo needs to be scooped ASAP but wee clumps and is easy to remove.

My cat only uses the tray a couple of times a month now, so the litter has been in there for months and there is no smell.

It's not cheap and is like paper bits, but I'm very impressed with it. I get it from Zooplus.

dementedpixie · 07/12/2017 22:19

Tried it but it tracked everywhere. I use the nature gold version which is more like pellets. I mix it with worlds best.

sluj · 07/12/2017 22:21

World's best. Minimum fuss, minimum mess and lasts for ages

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 07/12/2017 22:36

I've got the wood pellets at the moment and I hate it, it's so stinky so quickly. I'll try the world's best next. I'm struggling to get used to having the disgusting thing. My old cat has preferred to go outside until very recently, but now he's creaky and a bit confused, and needs somewhere to go in the house that isn't the carpet.

mayhew · 07/12/2017 22:38

Lidl clumping is £1.95 a bag which lasts us 6 weeks.

thegoodnameshadgone · 07/12/2017 22:50

I use the Costco litter. Smells a bit like lemongrass. Pick poo and wee out every morning. Do a full try change weekly. Two indoor cats. Three containers lasts
Me a month. No smell. I also put a bin liner over the tray under the litter if you see what I mean so I just need to tip it up and the litter goes in the bag, straight into the outdoor bin. That way the litter doesn’t actually touch the plastic tray

Firefries · 07/12/2017 22:55

I use cheaper non clumping litter for more than one cat like you m, and change it once a week. It only just starts to smell but I change it at the same time every week so it's not always smelly. I don't like the clumping stuff myself I find it goes too hard and it's gross trying to dig it out (my opinion only). I am happy giving the whole cat litter tray a thorough wash once a week. It keeps it nice and clean so overall it's nice and fresh for the cats (indoor cats here).

falange · 07/12/2017 22:56

I change mine every day. It smells if I don't. My cat won't use the pellets. I use an Aldi litter and use a bag in just under a week. I have a friend who doesn't change her litter often. She says her house doesn't smell. It does.

Firefries · 08/12/2017 02:53

Oh and I wanted to add I scoop it out everyday. It doesn't take long.

GrabbyMcGrabby · 08/12/2017 07:32

Have been using Sainsbury's clumping which is quite good, but has about an inch deep layer stuck to bottom of tray last week so interested in other options.

cattycat83 · 21/12/2017 14:15

I'm really struggling with mine. The only place I can have a tray is my downstairs loo that's v small..I have a covered tray that 2 cats use. (Tried 2 trays) i use cats best and it leaves such an awful mess..my house permanently looks like a litter tray

Showergel1 · 21/12/2017 14:28

Using supermarket cheapest at the moment and it's fine. Hated the smell of the wood pellets, found It a sickly sweet smell that got stuck up my nose.
Going through a bag and a half a week with 3 cats. We buy small plastic bags to bag it up which I hate as it makes up most of our rubbish but wouldn't want to be flushing bits down the loo. Used to just use plastic bags but 5p charge stopped all that!
Clean the clumps out whenever its used and scrub them once a week.
I do miss catsan.
Value litter is so dusty it's unreal.

TheSecondOfHerName · 21/12/2017 14:29

cattycat83 a top-entry can reduce tracking but might be too big for the room.

Cat's Best also do a smart pellet version (Nature Gold) which hardly tracks at all.

cattycat83 · 21/12/2017 22:15

Thesecondofhername thank you I'll look into it

helpfulperson · 21/12/2017 23:06

Only use Catsan. Poo picked every day, at least once. Full change... eeerrrr - when the cats refuse to use it so once a week (fortnight) or so. But I'm one of those slatterns who washes my hair weekly so what do I know!!

anotherprosecco · 28/12/2017 15:52

Catsan non clumping, pick the poo out every day, rake over the pellets. We have two kittens, quite happy to use same tray. Empty tray and thoroughly clean it every week, then fresh litter. Doesn't smell at all. Use half a bag a week.

dementedpixie · 28/12/2017 15:57

I found catsan went smelly very quickly.

Pannalash · 28/12/2017 16:15

We use Aldi or Lidl which I have found to be by far the cheapest. With 3 elderly cats I change it completely once a day.

nottoosurewhattoput · 04/01/2018 16:53

I use catsan, I have 1 indoor cat who poos (on the clock) every morning. We change the litter (usually) every weekend, but I do feel like we could do it less often I just am a bit OCD. I have a dyson cordless and catsan doesn't ruin the hoover.

Weezol · 04/01/2018 16:58

Another Cat's Best oko plus fan here, one house cat. I scoop the trays a few times a day, it's flushable and eco friendly. A bag does six to eight weeks. I get mine from Pets At Home.

dementedpixie · 04/01/2018 17:05

Pets at home is extortionate for cats best oko plus. Cheaper from zooplus/ bitiba
