My cat is being a nuisance to our local shop

I have a very silly, curious cat who likes to explore (he has been neutered). He also follows me on the school run and to the local convenience store, where I work. He then started coming in through the automatic doors while I was on shift and also waiting outside until I finished work where friendly customers would stroke him and fuss him. I adopted him and he was a stray so I think in the past he has had to rely on the kindness of strangers.
I've always shooed him out and when possible, taken him home (I only live 2 mins away) so I can go back on my shift. But he's now started going in the shop several times a day when I'm not there, sometimes staying there for several hours. He doesnt steal food but it's still a problem. I've explained to my colleagues that they shouldn't give him attention (some of them pick him up and cuddle him) as it's making it more likely he will return but ultimately he's my responsibility and I hate that he is being a nuisance. My boss is understanding but it is beginning to wear thin and they don't want any customers or inspectors to give them any grief-I can totally see their perspective and need to stop this somehow. I've also heard rumours among the neighbours that he sometimes goes in their houses. I'd be really annoyed if I were them, but no one has said anything directly to me. Not long after I adopted him, he was knocked down by a car and had to have surgery. After that I kept him inside for a couple of months but he really wasn't happy so I'm reluctant to keep him inside. I'm going to have to though, aren't I? Sad For his own safety and so he doesn't bother the neighbours.

No advice but you made me remember my dcat used to follow me to school and come in!! After lots of chasing her around school the secretary used to make me carry her back home and shut her in!!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 23/11/2017 10:00

Can you cat proof your garden so he can go outside but not roam?

I think it is so sad that we see cats like this as a nuisance. I'd love to live near such a friendly puss.

clairethewitch70 · 23/11/2017 10:36

I see a lovely cat in the foyer of our local supermarket - are you in Cardiff by any chance.

11pud · 23/11/2017 10:39

I totally get it's a little annoying for others but it's also crazy cute and funny. It would break my heart having to shoo my cat away from me if he came to see me. My only suggestion is cats hate water but I'm Not sure how you could incorporate that at your work Confused

retirednow · 23/11/2017 10:40

I love to see friendly cats, ours used to love going for walks with me. Our neighbours ( plural) cats often pop in, some have a snooze but I do discourage them and put them out which your neighbours could do. With the shop not everyone is a cat lover so I would probably keep him in. He sounds a sweetie, pic please.

TheSpottedZebra · 23/11/2017 10:43

I love him already.

Could you make a sign to put in the shop, sort of joking, with a picture saying please don't feed me and feel free to evict me from your house?

Clafoutis · 23/11/2017 10:51

Here are some pictures of dcat. I think I'm going to have to look at cat proofing the back garden although he is very determined once he's set his mind to it. I went to go and look for him after he went outside this morning and found him at the shop. Was approaching the door and saw my colleague (he didn't see me) huffing and puffing and kicking his foot out at him and then grumbling to the customers. It seems everyone is fed up now.

No, not Cardiff Claire I'm in Somerset. I love cats so enjoy seeing a friendly local cat but cats do have their antisocial sides, hunting birds, pooing (mine have litter trays but ultimately go where they want) etc so I can see why others don't like them and see them as a pain.
I might try the sign idea, that's a good suggestion, thanks. I have put one behind the tills so staff can ring me so I can fetch him but I feel like people get fed up ringing...

Aw that is so cute but I can see why its causing an issue at work though, silly cat. Such a shame people can't just leave him be, i'd love a shop that had a cat in it. There is a shop on Brick Lane that sells gift type things and they have a shop cat that seems to spend all its time sleeping.

I id once see a cat hanging out in the GP waiting room - it just walked through the automatic doors with someone and then mooched around the waiting room, got a bit of a fuss from a few people and hen walked out again!

Plexie · 23/11/2017 11:15

Also no advice but it minds me of Brockley Cat.

There is a pub just off brick lane that used to have a resident cat that terrorised dogs.

So sad that we don't cherish cats more. I'd make a point of visiting any supermarket with a resident cat it would look like a butterball though.j

retirednow · 23/11/2017 12:23

There are resident cats in lots of pubs in London, I would also go out of my way to visit a shop if there was a cat there but we all know that not everyone feels the same way. I hate it when people kick animals or throw things at them to shoo them away, it really upsets me which is one reason I would try my best to keep the cat in. He is just being friendly and obviously the shop is on his 'patch' of places to visit but if people are getting fed up then you have to try and stop him somehow. what a shame.

Loverunandwine · 23/11/2017 12:26

Why isn’t you put one of those devices near the shop which admits a high frequency sound? We have artificial grass in our garden so had to buy a couple to stop cats using the grass as a litter tray. It’s been really effective.

Monkeypuzzle32 · 23/11/2017 12:30

he sounds lovely which I know is not much help but I'd love to see a cat in a shop!

Mmmm, but this was the first time I had to break up a pub brawl between one and a dog though ... The por dog just didn't get why The cat didn't want her bum enthusiastically sniffed and the dog's owner was too busy trying to impres his date to keep the dog on its leash ...

Papergirl1968 · 23/11/2017 12:39

I have to take the dc to CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service) several times a week and a cat is always curled up on one of the chairs in the waiting room. Most of the kids and their parents love it.

retirednow · 23/11/2017 14:27

Maybe you should take some pics of him near or in the shop and call your local paper. Turn him into a celeb then no one will dare moan and the shop will get more business😀

BlueKarou · 23/11/2017 14:41

My old cat used to trot across the road to the foyer of the local GP surgery, where she would curl up on the spare wheelchair they kept in there. It was months before I found out she did this. Once she was accidentally locked in the surgery over night!

We have the opposite here at work - a local cat, not a stray, often turns up at the office, to the point that people have had to be told not to open doors/windows to let him in, as he had picked up quite the following.

VeganIan · 23/11/2017 14:46

There was a cat near the school my Dc had music lessons in - it would constantly harangue waiting parents for cuddles. I dread to think what it did in the playground during breaktime, it was hard enough keeping it out of the building after school Smile

I guess you can only shut him in and make him a pen of some sort around his cat flap - just google catio for ideas.

Theyearofthecats · 23/11/2017 19:17

I had a cat who used to follow DS to school and wait by the playground.
I would just try to keep her in the house at school run time because of traffic but she would sneak into the tray under Dds pram sometimes.
She used to visit a local shop that sold expensive fires and surrounds.
The shop would feed her and pet her until the day they noticed she had done her business in the imitation coal of a marble suite that they were attempting to sell. She was banned after that.
Is there a way you can keep your cat happy indoors while you work?
Also Dhs work friends cat follows him to work and sits in the office they don't mind though it brightens their day.

Monkeypuzzle32 · 23/11/2017 19:50

when I bought my car, they had a cat asleep in one of the show models-apparently he turned up everyday then went home (to a house behind) when the showroom closed!!

Grin

Brilliant!

My local Tesco (only an express one) had a huge tabby! He died last year and everyone raised money for the local animal shelter in his memory.
