My cat is being a nuisance to our local shop

I have a very silly, curious cat who likes to explore (he has been neutered). He also follows me on the school run and to the local convenience store, where I work. He then started coming in through the automatic doors while I was on shift and also waiting outside until I finished work where friendly customers would stroke him and fuss him. I adopted him and he was a stray so I think in the past he has had to rely on the kindness of strangers.
I've always shooed him out and when possible, taken him home (I only live 2 mins away) so I can go back on my shift. But he's now started going in the shop several times a day when I'm not there, sometimes staying there for several hours. He doesnt steal food but it's still a problem. I've explained to my colleagues that they shouldn't give him attention (some of them pick him up and cuddle him) as it's making it more likely he will return but ultimately he's my responsibility and I hate that he is being a nuisance. My boss is understanding but it is beginning to wear thin and they don't want any customers or inspectors to give them any grief-I can totally see their perspective and need to stop this somehow. I've also heard rumours among the neighbours that he sometimes goes in their houses. I'd be really annoyed if I were them, but no one has said anything directly to me. Not long after I adopted him, he was knocked down by a car and had to have surgery. After that I kept him inside for a couple of months but he really wasn't happy so I'm reluctant to keep him inside. I'm going to have to though, aren't I? Sad For his own safety and so he doesn't bother the neighbours.

Love this 😂 Our village had a little ginger cat that used to visit the local supermarkets; when it rained he'd lay down on the mat in the doorway under the heater. Management tried to evict him soooo many times but customers adored him & complained. Poor lad got killed recently, it was like the whole village went into mourning 😔

Only thing I could suggest is one of those cat detterant noise things.

My cat comes on the school run with me too. I've seen him licking the milk delivery which the milkman leaves at the gates Shock. He's got at least 3 other homes as well as ours. The only thing I could suggest is a quick blast with a spray bottle every time he enters the shop.

Aww I love this but I can see why it might be annoying to people. I had a cat who used to meet me at the train station on my way home from work. If it was raining she'd go inside my backpack. Other commuters were Hmm

In Glasgow there is a cat who has been adopted by a hospital and the train station attached to it. He's on twitter as @HyndlandStCat and both the rail company and local NHS have made him badges! Grin

Aw, poor little thing. That's really sweet and funny.

There's a gift shop near me that has the most beautiful resident British Blue. Sometimes he sits in the middle of the floor looking imperious, and sometimes he sits hunched on the counter with his eyes screwed tight shut, and grumbles if you stroke him. I go into the shop just to see him

Aw, one of my cats is a roamer too (also ex stray). Apparently she visits houses up to 20 doors down! (row of terraces).
My only solution has been a collar with a tag and her address, and a label on the collar saying "DO NOT FEED ME".

There is a garden centre near us who have a resident cat. He actually lives in a house over the back but makes his way to them every day and lies on the counter next to the till. This way he can be petted and adored all day and fed treats by the staff.

I actually love this thread.

I bet those who are fed up are at the very least equally balanced by those who are utterly charmed by your cat. Shame it's too late to pretend he's not yours!!

I'd go with it for the reason that he's a roaming hunting animal and if he was really made unwelcome he'd leave. I'd be more concerned by him being fed and made at home by your neighbours! He's gorgeous Grin
