A breed of cat that doesn't moult excessively?

DD has lived with our large collection of hairy pets all her life. She's now bought her own place but her partner is not keen on a cat that will moult like mad, the same as ours do here. Is there a breed that is less prone to moulting? Not a sphinx.

Devon or Cornish Rex

Wolfiefan · 09/09/2017 18:21

How does he feel about vomit, wee or poo accidents or "presents"?
I would worry about anyone who chooses a pet based on moulting

PencilsInSpace · 09/09/2017 18:23

I don't know what breed ours is, possibly some ragdoll in her, but she has very fine fluffy black fur and hardly sheds at all. We also have a tabby with short, much coarser hair and she sheds like a bastard.

If she gets an adult from a rescue she can get a fair idea just by stroking them.

Auntiedahlia · 09/09/2017 18:26

He's got no issues with poo, vomit etc. He just wears a suit to work, and after years of visiting here still finds long cream cat hairs on his dark clothes! He would love a cat too.

Definitely DON'T get a black and white long haired! She would leave white on dark and black on white. I swear she did!!!
Miss that cat!!
Wonder how much oriental breeds moult?

PencilsInSpace · 09/09/2017 18:32

Ideally you get a cat the same colour as your smartest clothes/majority of your wardrobe Grin

MilkshakeAddict · 09/09/2017 18:36

Ragdoll cats don't moult. However, they do lose hair in the same way any animal that doesn't have different coats for different seasons does.

shouldwestayorshouldwego · 09/09/2017 18:40

Our black long hair rescue cat sounds just like Pencilsinspace's cat. She very rarely sheds individual hairs, she sheds whole clumps or has to have them groomed out of her. She is a bit incompetent as a cat though - can't jump, bury poo etc, so I reckon that hair shedding is just another area which she can't manage to achieve successfully.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 09/09/2017 18:41

I'm not sure it's possible, OP.

PencilsInSpace · 09/09/2017 18:41

That's interesting Milkshake. The more I hear about ragdolls the more I think ours must have some ragdoll in her mix. How is the hair loss you mention different from moulting?

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 09/09/2017 18:45

My black cat sheds huge clods of hair about the place. He also leaves individual hairs too. My house is very clean and tidy but you will still get a surprise hair in your coffee, cereal etc. Sorry about that.

DuckOffAutocorrectYouShiv · 09/09/2017 18:48

For example, my iPad screen has about 7 random hairs stuck on it. I realise that my house sounds like sting of the dump's gaff at this point.

PencilsInSpace · 09/09/2017 18:48

Your DD needs to go to a rescue and stroke all the black cats to see which sheds the least. What a terrible chore Grin The rescue will love her if she can give a home to a black cat, they're notoriously difficult to rehome.

I 💕 black cats.

Fruitcocktail6 · 09/09/2017 18:51

I have ragdolls and they certainly moult. Everyfuckingwhere.

Auntiedahlia · 09/09/2017 18:56

Thank you all! Smile. The cat that moulted most here was a ragdoll! A lovely black rescue cat is a great idea. A house without a cat is not a home when you've been surrounded by animals all your life.

Our black fluffy cuddle monster doesn't seem to shed much at all, even in clumps. I could probably drag a few hairs off her blanket but that's about it. She doesn't get tangles either which was a nice surprise. I've only ever had one other really fluffy cat and he needed constant grooming to prevent dreadlocks in the pants region. He also shed a lot of hair, thinking back. He was ginger and we were told he had some Persian in him.

WunWun · 09/09/2017 19:00

Oh, why not a Sphynx? They're lovely. Very pricey though I dare say.

RandomMess · 09/09/2017 19:06

Look at the Rex rescue sites you could probably rehome a Queen without paying ££££

AccrualIntentions · 09/09/2017 19:08

My black shorthaired mog barely moults at all. His black shorthaired mog sister who had slightly fluffier textured fur moulted all over the place. I think there's an element of luck!

Auntiedahlia · 09/09/2017 19:13

I don't think sphinx cats are ethical, in the same way as I wouldn't buy a pug.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2017 20:14

Long haired Persian, seriously. They shed a bit but I'm little clumps and it first stick to your clothes like short hair does.

Toddlerteaplease · 09/09/2017 20:15

My black girl has sat next to my white trousers and don't leave hair.

Allergictoironing · 09/09/2017 20:39

My short haired black cats leave piles of soft pale grey underfur around the house, which gathers in the corners like snowdrifts after wind. My friend's long haired black cat hardly seems to shed at all!
