Which breed of cat?

Looking for a new kitten to join our family.

We also have a 1yr old Ragdoll and young DC.

Will any breed of cat fit with a Ragdoll? I'm looking maybe a British Shorthaired?

I'm not really sure but we have a tabby and a Turkish van, the Turkish van is hilarious they have a love of water.

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2017 20:58

Persian. The best breed of cat ever!

Mincepies76 · 29/08/2017 22:11

Agree, Persians are awesome Smile I have a Persian Chinchilla, sweetest boy ever..

Toddlerteaplease · 29/08/2017 22:33

My friend has a golden exotic Persian chinchilla. She's gorgeous but a total madam! As another poster on here put it. Persians are furniture with fur. Sums my two up perfectly!

Cupcakey · 29/08/2017 22:44

What about a moggie :) my tabby who was a rescue cat is the loveliest cat ever so soft.
Lots of kittens in rescue centres just waiting to be loved xxx

flumpybear · 29/08/2017 22:51

I'm a moggie fan too, but thinking if a Maine coon or Norwegian forest cat for our next one 🐱

DumbledoresApprentice · 29/08/2017 22:59

I got a Maine Coon from a rescue. I mean, she might be a cross, but her adoption paperwork and microchip info say Maine Coon. She's the sweetest thing.

Gorgeous!!

DumbledoresApprentice · 29/08/2017 23:13

Thanks, we love her!

IlovePeppa · 30/08/2017 08:14

Thanks for the replies.

I love Persians and Main Coons but too expensive considering I bought my Raggy for £500.

Moggys just want to be outside all the time and we would hardly see it, that's why we went for a pedigree as we don't let him out.

There are some specialist pedigree rescues out there - both Cozie and Toddler got theirs from breed rescues (Siamese and Persian respectively).

DumbledoresApprentice · 30/08/2017 08:44

My mum has always had indoor moggies. I don't think they are inherently mor outdoorsy than pedigrees it's just people with pedigrees are more likely to keep them in. If cost is an issue maybe a breed rescue would suit you better.

Not all! Mine spends time in the garden but also spends a lot of time indoors. He has a curfew so he's always in of an evening.

I don't understand why people buy kittens when there are so many cats and kittens in rescues, including breeds.

DoraChance · 30/08/2017 09:18

I have a Maine. They're very confident and friendly, and he's wonderful with DS - always comes to see if he's ok if he cries for any reason. He can be very naughty though, and once he has an idea in his head it's very hard to deter him.

Was just about to say about Persian rescues. My adoption fee was £200 each/ they'd had a lot of money spent on them by the rescue.

Toddlerteaplease · 30/08/2017 11:08

St Francis had a Siberian, a moggy and a pair of Tiffany's.

winchesterfan · 30/08/2017 11:16

We have 2 British shorthairs, both rescues, and ragdolls. The BSH are far more independent than ragdolls, everything is on their terms and they don't like to be picked up, strokes etc like the ragdolls do. That being said, they are both such friendly and funny little cats, they both have really cheeky personalities

NomDePlumeReloaded · 30/08/2017 11:40

I've had rescue mogs all my life and they've pretty much all been lazy bastards with very affectionate personalities (despite some very challenging starts in some cases). All able to come/go as they please. More active outdoors in the summer, less so in the winter. Cats have really wide territories, I would love a pedigree but haven't had one because I couldn't keep it in. It would be for my benefit more than the cat's (fear of theft, fear of my £1k 'investment' getting injured).

TBH, I think temperament is more nurture than nature and you get out what you put in with pets (or indeed anything in life), on the whole.

MadameJosephine · 31/08/2017 23:28

I have a beautiful rescue BSH but like a PP said she is very independent and does her own thing most of the time unlike the few ragdolls I have met. She can be quite playful and will sometimes come and spend some time on my lap in the evenings but only if it suits her.

Siberian! we have three and they are fabulous and very affectionate

Henrythehoover · 31/08/2017 23:40

I have these two moggies and they never want to leave the house. Even if I pick them up and put them outside they sit just by the door waiting to come back in as soon as they have done their business.

Third vote for a Maine Coon. We have two half Maine Coons from the same litter. They have an amazing temperament. So sweet and affectionate but quite laid back. No constant yowling for food or anything. They are generally not lap cats (and they can grow to be massive!) but always want to sit near you whatever you are doing. And they sleep like to sleep with you too.
Having had them I think I would always want Maine Coons in future.

stressystressy · 03/09/2017 13:48

We foster moggies. All are very happy to have an indoor home. They all have sweet, quirky personalities and I'd have adopted each and every one of them given the chance. Not all moggies want to go outside to explore.

NC4now · 03/09/2017 22:30

My BSH is a softy. He hides under the bed and pounces on our feet, or sits at the top of the stairs and swipes us as we pass. He sleeps on our bed and loves nothing more than a long lie in in the morning.
I luffs him ❤️

@MadameJosephine and @NC4now love your BSHs!

My BSH is super chilled and likes company, and I suspect he would be happy enough with another cat about.

He isn't much of a lap cat though, he will get on when it suits him for a big purr and a head rub then after about 5/10 mins jump off and go lie down somewhere near by.

The breed is generally quite independent, chilled and not a lap cat breed.
