Can we have a flea support group please?

I am done.

I'm about to just lie down and surrender my bodies to the fleas, they have won, I have lost.

I fostered a mum cat and she had five kittens in my care. I was informed that she definitely didn't have fleas but low and behold of course she did. By the time I had noticed the house was lifting with them Sad

I treated all my cats three weeks ago and sprayed the house, washing soft furnishings etc. Hoovered every day like a good girl, but the fleas just kept seeming to multiply.
The cats were adopted so we sprayed the house again and went on holiday for 5 days. When we came back the cat room was like a flea rave, I walked across the room and they were bold as brass swarming around my feet and legs. I sprayed the room again, cried, had a tantrum and single handily lifted my carpet and removed it from my house. Then I sprayed the room again.
I can still see fleas merrily jumping around my cat like it's Saturday night at flea Glastonbury.

Today I am re washing my sheets and spraying my poor naked house again.

Please say there's other people in the same boat, I need a hand hold... and a bath.

We have a newish puppy who has no signs of fleas on him and he's been de flead by the vet but low and behold I'm covered in bites! It can be a coincidence.
However, we do have the local neighbourhood bastard cats that come in if the window is left open a crack and we have had a few visits recently so maybe it's them?? Either way, if I send another night itching I'm going to get murderous!
I hear you can get the local council to come and fumigate for a small fee?

When you say you have treated the cat and the house - my question is with what ? When you buy from places such as supermarkets or Pets at Home even if it's well named products such as Frontline, it will be the lesser strength. They will kill live fleas on the cat but their will be eggs that will hatch and off the problem goes again. For spray for the house you need a spray such as R.IP or Indorex they say it offers 12 months cover and whilst it's good I wouldn't go that far. You need to spray everything including skirting boards, under beds, behind furniture etc. Back to cat spot on treatments - you need to get it from your get on prescription or at least if you plan to buy online get the prescription from your vet. Remember the prescribed treatment will kill eggs as well.

SentientCushion · 22/08/2017 10:22

I've used advocate spot on from the vets and indorex spray also from the vets.

Can you get something like this? www.newpharma.be/pharmacie/bayer-animal/176219/bolfo-fleegard-fogger-spray-150ml.html It's a fogger. I've used it twice before, once on a house I moved into that was infested and once at a place where I was cat-sitting where the carpet was full of fleas (I ended up in hospital with those bites).

Really effective both times.

SentientCushion · 22/08/2017 10:25

Oh wait I've just double checked the package and it's actually advantage spot on

OP posts:
BlondeB83 · 22/08/2017 10:25

Try Advantage, it's much better than Frontline or the stuff the vet used - I had similar last year and it was the only thing that worked!

It's cheap from this website - a third of the price of Pets at Home!

BlondeB83 · 22/08/2017 10:26

Ahh sorry! Same stuff you have used!!

paap1975 · 22/08/2017 10:26

Oh, you have to leave the house and you need at least one per floor

Copperbeech33 · 22/08/2017 10:26

this is typical when you return from a holiday, don't worry.

They all develop to within a few seconds of their adult form and lay dormant until there are vibrations in the room, then all hatch at one, it can literally be thousands that have accumulated in your absence, from just a hand full of parents.

It is a nasty experience, but it is actually the returning home after a break that makes it happen, thats all

BlondeB83 · 22/08/2017 10:26

Just make sure the vets dose was good enough, my fat cat had to have the big girl dose before it worked! Grin

SentientCushion · 22/08/2017 10:27

We went and got them weighed for the dose we have a teeny one for the kitten a small one for our sleek girl and a bucket for a our fatso.

Oh I fully get you and you have my deepest sympathy.
We got a puppy, puppy had fleas.
I treated puppy every 4 weeks, I bathed him in flea shampoo and I combed him regularly.
That didn't work, So I repeated, treated all 5 cats (and neighbour visiting cat) Guinea pigs AND the RIP flea spray and hoovered
Repeated 4 weeks later...
Fleas appear to be getting less but I know if I show the smallest sign of weakness they will be back in their masses

Nadinexo1 · 22/08/2017 10:36

we only have the one cat and for the past month are covered in flea bites everyday. I vacuum everyday sometimes twice as I have messy kids and washed everything and treated my cat with frontline and still they haven't gone Confused

PosiePootlePerkins · 22/08/2017 10:38

Yep we had this last summer, it was horrible. Old cat had passed away but left several biting buggers behind, we came back from holiday and it was exactly as you describe, fleas jumping all over my DH and DS. They don't bite me or other Ds weirdly!
We did what you have done, indorex everywhere, hot wash whatever we could, when we got a new cat she was treated with advantage. They did go, but you have to wait for any remaining chrysalis to hatch and bite the cat, then die, as the spray won't kill that stage of the flea's life cycle.
One other thing I did as an extra precaution was pay for the cat to have a Program injection, it lasts for 6 months and makes any female biting flea infertile, so eventually breaks the life cycle. You may not be able/wish to afford this if it is a foster cat but it did make a difference.
Good luck, fleas are nasty.

PosiePootlePerkins · 22/08/2017 10:39

nadinexo Frontline isn't effective anymore, try advantage or advocate.

TarquinGyrfalcon · 22/08/2017 10:40

We had a shocking flea infestation earlier this year.
It took several weeks to clear - all pets were treated and combed and de-fleaed daily and we used flea traps, the kind with a little light bulb and a sticky pad.

Namethecat · 22/08/2017 10:45

My cat is currently on Broadline apparently does the lot fleas, eggs, ticks and worms. Pack of 6 £50 + .

gingergenius · 22/08/2017 10:48

I feel your pain. Went through this with my two moggies. Lasted three months. Wanted to gouge my eyes out with rusty spoons by the end. Just been through similar with DDog. Nasty jumping Glastonbury-raving bastards. Although if I catch them, I do like squashing them and hearing them pop!

HepKestrel · 22/08/2017 10:52

Unfortunately it can take 1-2 months as they keep hatching. Sounds as if you are doing everything right.

I ended up following GrumpyOldCat round the house washing or spraying everything he sat on.

SentientCushion · 22/08/2017 10:56

It's the madness that gets you.

That sensation as you're lying in bed like you can feel them crawling all over you. Blurggggjjhhhhh

whathaveiforgottentoday · 22/08/2017 10:57

We have 3 cats. The boys are fine but the female has always got fleas. Been to the vet several times getting stronger and stronger stuff and done the house several times with indorex spray. I'm just thinking some cats are more susceptible than others. Luckily we have mainly wooden floors throughout so not so infested in the house and even luckier, the fleas don't bite me (but they love DH). Any suggestions for treating my poor female moggy in addition to broad line/combing her daily would be appreciated.

Copperbeech33 · 22/08/2017 11:16

you have my sympathy

SentientCushion · 22/08/2017 11:21

Also telling someone with a flea infestation to Hoover is like telling a pregnant woman with heartburn to eat a ginger biscuit Grin

I've decided to cheer myself up by using it as an excuse to buy myself brand new 1000 thread count bedding.

5rivers7hills · 22/08/2017 12:57

I've got a few problem at the moment.

Indorex "3 bed house" total lie. That did 2 bedrooms and a rug!

I was using advantage but have got Advocate now.
