care of just spayed female kitty with boisterous brother

I have just had her brother neutered. Now I am going to have to make an appointment to get her spayed. He only had little incisions. I'm guessing her procedure is going to be more invasive and she will need protection from their rough play with bunny kicks etc.

I haven't made the phone call yet. I am going to have to arrange it within a day or two (or few). When I collect her after the procedure, will he have to be kept away from her for a night, night and day or couple of days.
They have only been apart for the day he had his neutering done and met up again at 4pm. Will her abdomen be very tender?

I just want to know what to set up before I make the call to the vet.

Oh and here is the prospective patient

She looks so like my boy Storm! Females take longer to heal i think and they end up with a collar or one of those bodysuit things. Maybe speak to the vet about the logistics

I'd best prepare another room for her then. Or bring him up to bed with me.

I'd say Storm is great on a cold winter's day. That tail alone would keep you warm. Do you brush him?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 15/08/2017 13:26

Yes we brush him although he likes to eat the brush at the same time! It is an impressive tail especially when he sticks it in the air. It's like a skunk tail

I'm watching with interest as this will be me next week. How old is she now? Mines just over five months. Are you taking any time off work? I'm planning on locking her up in my bedroom for a few hours but if she's anything like Daph she will be jumping all over the shop after two hours. Am also considering a body suit do u know where we can get one cheaper than the vets?

Doobigetta · 17/08/2017 11:37

Mine is having her op next week. I was actually just about to start a thread asking for reassurance. I've always been completely convinced that neutering is the right thing to do, but I've only had a boy cat until now. I'm feeling really guilty that I'm condemning my little girl to a couple of weeks of pain and being confined indoors, when right now there's nothing wrong with her.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/08/2017 12:34

Our tortie escaped after her op & squeezed under a gate, I was convinced she'd come back with her insides out but it was fine. She took her own stitches out too. Torties are hard.

It's a tiny scar now compared to 30yrs ago.

LapdanceShoeshine · 17/08/2017 12:42

I've had 3 females spayed - 2 at 5-6 months, 1 at 4 months - they appeared to have no pain afterwards & behaved pretty much as usual (although one of them looked stoned for hours Grin). No cones required, & apart from a bit of licking initially they left their incisions alone.

No boisterous brother here though, so a sleeve thing sounds like a good idea Smile

LapdanceShoeshine · 17/08/2017 12:45

Here's the 4-month one. Incision is tiny, & stitches dissolved.

Aw look at her bless her. I'm sure my Daphne was done from underneath. I'm supposed to go to work the next day and I'm wondering if that will even be ok.

Weedsnseeds1 · 17/08/2017 23:19

They seem to heal much quicker than you would believe possible. I haven't even used canes on mine in the past, although admittedly, they haven't had a brother to fight with..

Cailleach1 · 22/08/2017 18:32

Hi,
thanks for all the replies. She had it done today. She has a collar on. It is just like lapdance's cat, one fairly small incision on her side. Keyhole with stitches which will dissolve. The collar is incapacitating her. I have had to hand feed her. The collar is blocking her from getting her food because it is getting caught on the dishes. I have saucers and bowls. Water in wide dish, shallower dish and tall, small diameter mug. They said to keep it on for 5 days. I don't think we will survive that. She is bumping into everything. Afraid to take it off incase I cannot get it back on safely.

Boy being excellent at the moment. I will only leave them together under supervision, though. I am going to move him to a different room to sleep overnight. I'd prefer to have her in her usual room. He will be devastated.

Each , I am leaving her overnight. That is the same as the next day, really. Worse. I might check on her. OK, she has just mastered how to eat with it on. It is driving her nuts.

she has just got the darn thing off. 5 days, huh. I'm afraid to put it back on in case it becomes a choking or hanging liability.

We aren't even home one hour. So much for the cones. Admittedly, she has a tiny kitten neck and they had to use a bandage to tie it as well.

Ooh also watching this

We had 2 kittens done at the same time and they fought and fought, it was awful. We got rid of the cones of shame and put them in upside-down sleeved baby gros with an extra hole cut out. It worked really well and they were more comfy

BUT we are shortly getting newer kitten done and she's on her own. I'm worried that older cat will be rough with her as they play fight a lot and obv older cat won't be post-op too. We have a big dog crate that we put the kitten in when first doing introductions but not sure how long we should keep her in there/in a separate room....arggh!

caoraich · 22/08/2017 18:45

Ooh just seen your update. I will explain the body suit thing in more detail- everyone I've told about it thinks we are mad but it worked really well for keeping the stitches covered and they couldn't escape

Get body suit baby gro thing with sleeves. Sleeves are important as otherwise it hikes up past the suture site. Put cat into it upside-down - easiest way is to hold the suit up with the neck and sleeves hanging down and basically drop cat into it. Her tail and bum pops out the neck of the suit.

Cut a hole just above the poppers of the body suit (before putting it on cat!!) and then put cat's head through that and do up the poppers under her chin. No risk of strangling as at worst the neck hole tears a bit and poppers come undone. Front legs then just go out where the baby legs would.

Here's Freya posing in hers.

Right. We are going on Thursday. It won't be keyhole. Sorry I'm on nights so it will be from the next night I will be leaving her. I'm not doing the cone thing her neck is so small plus she plays in the blinds. I'm planning on putting her in my room initially as I have it set up with a litter tray etc. I'm tempted by the suit anyone know where I can get one from or shall I pay ££ at the vets? Why do they want them in so early in the morning if the ops not til the afternoon?

EachandEveryone · 22/08/2017 19:04

Freya looks like my Daphne when she was nice and slim!

LapdanceShoeshine · 22/08/2017 19:23

Freya looks really pleased with her beautiful blue suit Grin

caoraich · 22/08/2017 19:30

Each I presume it's to make 100% sure that they're properly fasted- as even if you don't give them breakfast they might have a nibble of stray dreamies around the house (or at least our house!!)

We got the suits in a supermarket in the baby section, 3-6 months was about right and then just cut head holes. I dashed there after we'd had them home 40mins and it was clear the cones were torture and thoroughly confused the clothing attendant lady:
"Which one of these would fit a 4 month old cat!?!?" while waving various packets at her Blush

Lapdance that is her looking pleased.... here's her "why have you humiliated me!?" pose...

That is inspired, caoraich . Could she be any more chilled out and relaxed about it? Better than the drama we just went through with the blasted cone. For nothing as it is off now.

Each , the one caoraich has shown is a baby's long sleeved body suit/vest with poppers, upcycled to healthcare product. Maybe you could pick up a cheap one in primark or similar. If you're passing a charity shop, they may have one. Age would depend on you cat's size, I'd imagine. The vet didn't offer me a bodysuit, just the cone. On her own, your girl may just sleep. My girl has now burrowed under the throw on the sofa and is sleeping.

Oh gosh, the fangs. She had a tail tale to tell when she went home about the person who was dressing her cats in baby clothes Grin .

LapdanceShoeshine · 22/08/2017 19:48

caoraich, I wasn't being sarky - she is positively preening! (& extremely beautiful. Better not tell her I said so though)

caoraich · 22/08/2017 20:06

haha lapdance - she is a very sarky cat you see Grin
I swear she looks at me like "oh FFS, what are you doing NOW?" on at least a daily basis

And yeah OP- I have not ventured back into that particular branch of Tesco Blush

EachandEveryone · 22/08/2017 21:10

Isnit a vest or a long sleeved babygriw? Can you tell I've never had children? Andbim niw probably going to end up buying one from Bodem or summat

caoraich · 22/08/2017 21:30

Haha each yup that was my first foray into the baby section too!!
I got a multipack thing, and the long sleeved ones were much better- the ones with no sleeves sort of rode up and didn't cover the sutures properly. You can cut the sleeves a bit shorter so they don't cover too much of the back leg and it's more comfy for them too.

I love the idea of Boden especially for cats Grin
