Looking for help and a hand hold. Cat diagnosed with triaditis. Idiot boy ate some fat balls and have been at emergency vet twice over the weekend. He still not great - have had to give him 2 enemas - anyone with experience or advice?

He is just over a year old and normally will take the food out of your mouth. He is still not eating tonight.

Poor boy and how stressful for you. Is he at home with you now?

Joechill · 13/08/2017 21:58

He is with me but doesn't want attention

Is he on pain relief? Are you able to syringe feed him?

Different cause than eating something but our cat was ultimately admitted for IV treatment. I'd probably request this for your boy if he's no better by the morning.

Yes our cat! Just over two years ago we found our she had it no health problems beforehand. Is a very long story but use had surgery at a referral vets who removed her gallbladder and cleaned out her bile duct, they performed biopsies during the surgery which confirmed this. She has been on hypoallergenic food since.
However due to her pancreas being badly damaged she is now diabetic and has an immunosuppressant tablet once a week ( reduced from a greater frequency) which keeps her bowels in check.
She is 14 now, approaching 15 and it has been quite a couple of years for her, us and the vets.
As far as your boy is concerned pain relief and appetite stimulant drugs would be good. Has he any medication?

Joechill · 13/08/2017 22:20

He had morphine last night and is on antibiotics. They think he is just knackered with all that has gone on as his vital signs are good. Not totally convinced as he is not reactive but he looks like he is having a good sleep

He was on an IV all last night to hydrate him as he had been violently sick.

My girl had this in February. She was fine in the morning. A bit quiet that evening but didn't think much of it. When I left for Work she was lying on the spare room floor, when I got back 13 hours later she was still there. I picked her up and she cried. Took her straight to the emergency vet and she was critically ill. They found a lump in her neck so did a laparotomy to rule out lymphoma or any other obstruction and saw that her pancreas was inflamed. She was on morphine and ketamine for pain, IV fluids and IV antibiotics. She was critically ill for a week. I don't think the vets expected her to survive and at times I didn't. It turned out the lump in her neck was just an infected lymph node and somehow the infection spread and caused triaditis. She came home with a feeding tube in her neck. Only used it for a day before I realised she wasn't eating because she was being filled up with milk. Feeedjng tube came out and she's never looked back! I can't tell you how proud I am that she had the will to survive against the odds. Pictures of her in hospital and how she is now!

Ok so he has something. Do keep encouraging him to eat, warm up wet food or boil some chicken/turkey breast. I'm trying to remember all the drugs our cat had there were steroids (to reduce inflammation), one for the liver, antibiotics, the appetite stimulants and something else but can't remember it. Oh and lactulose.
Make sure he has enough pain relief and seriously the appetite stimulants are worth asking for if he won't eat.
Hopefully he feels better after a sleep.

Thank you all. Little monkey has just jumped on me demanding food. Has eaten some chicken and fish and is cuddling down with me and his brother. Hopefully this is him on the mend. Have a check up with our vet tomorrow to look at how to manage things.

That's great news!

Vinorosso74 · 14/08/2017 08:13

That's a good sign! The furry fiends do like to worry their humans!

littlewhitething · 14/08/2017 08:17

Thank heavens he's OK. I worry myself silly over our cats!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/08/2017 13:37

Toddler, is that (not sure which cat it is) a tail that I can see all bandaged in blue?

Best to all sick kitties...

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 14:03

Yes it's her tail. She was so shut down and unwell that she was seeing where she was lying. So her tummy and tail were soaked. I took it off when we got home and she dragged her eat tail all over the house! Lovely. When she started to recover she used to sit in her litter tray, so they had to give her one to sit in and one to wee in. I thought that was hilarious!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/08/2017 14:23

Poor, poor darling. She looks a mess although that tail does look very silly. By contrast, she looks hale and hearty today!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 14:57

She certainly is hale and Hearty. She was snuggled up to me this morning and kept giving me 'the paw' on my lips. Tried not to think about where that paw had been! But it was very cute.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/08/2017 14:59

Awwwww she's so beautiful. I love the way her fur is black and smoke.

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 15:02

When I took Fatty to the same vet for her jaw the nurse remembered Snorg. Apparently she was famous, because she is so sweet and sticks her bum in the air and because she survived. Hope the OPs cat is continuing to recover!

YetAnotherSpartacus · 14/08/2017 15:08

Yes, and has learned lesson re fat balls :( Silly boy!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 15:40

Are they fat balls for birds?

Joechill · 14/08/2017 19:10

Thank you all for your help. Took him to my own vet for a check up tonight and he thinks he is doing great considering what he has been through. Yes Toddler it was fat balls for birds! Vet has said a low fat diet should help but unsure what cat food would be best - any advice? He is not overweight, bordering on underweight due to him being sick a few times when he eats the wrong stuff, so don't necessarily need low calorie just low fat. He snoozing happy now again after eating chicken breast and haddock today.

Joechill · 14/08/2017 19:17

Beautiful girl Toddler so happy she made it through

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 19:38

Thankyou. She's getting a bit chunky again so I think she's going to have to go on a diet, she went straight back on to her usual Persian food. She doesn't really eat anything else. She had some recovery milk to have at first but she wouldn't drink it!
What on earth possessed your crazy feline to eat fat balls! I mean, what on earth goes through their heads!

Toddlerteaplease · 14/08/2017 19:39

Chicken breast and haddock. Good luck getting him to eat boring cat food!
