We are keen to get a rescue kitten but should we be considering a particular breed?

Is asthma not a concern with cats? Does anyone have experience/advice they would be kind enough to share. I come from the dark (dog) side of experience only.

One last punt at bumping my message.

I lied. Bump.

Is your dh allergic to cats? DD2 has severe asthma but does not react to cats - all of her allergic reactions are to plant based items

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:03

Are all the cat people asleep under a cat hat by 10pm?

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:05

Sorry Lunde cross post. DH childhood cat made him allergic but he had no choice. He loved that cat! Cats make him weezey.

My DH has asthma. Cats are a massive trigger for him. I think you'd be foolish and irresponsible to get a cat without seeing if they affect your DH first.

Saying that, we have 2 cats. But our live in the attic and don't come into the main part of the house at all. DH can be up there for about 5 minutes before he starts wheezing.

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:07

But he still wants one Smile

JumpingJellybeanz · 05/08/2017 22:07

So he knows they make him wheezy but you still plan to get one Confused. Why?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 05/08/2017 22:08

I think you need to know if cats trigger his asthma. DH has asthma and we eventually had to rehome our two cats, after 10 years. He thought it would be OK, and it was for the first few years, but year on year it got worse, which a consultant had predicted. It was really sad rehoming them although worked out well for all of us including the cats and we got to visit them until they recently died. But you want to avoid this scenario!

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:09

Thank you jumping we have a big house but all feel that we want cat hats or as near as they please.

How do we test a cat with DH?

Cakecrumbsinmybra · 05/08/2017 22:09

Cross post - you would be really foolish to get them knowing the above.

kali110 · 05/08/2017 22:11

Find out if its a trigger, a blood test will tell you.
Im allergic to rabbits, but not cats.
We have several!
I had no idea i was even allergic to the rabbic!

NC4now · 05/08/2017 22:11

I'm allergic to cats. More hayfever type symptoms but I struggle with other people's cats.
We have a British Shorthair. I chose him because his breed has less allergen and is bloody cute. The first week I needed piraton but I'm totally fine with him now. He sleeps on my bed and snuggles my face without any issues.

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:11

Oh cake your message is most useful. We can not consider a possible re homing.

So it's a simple decision. My DH has to go Grin

Asthma attacks can kill. I'd encor age him to take take it a bit more seriously.
Perhaps go to a rescue be around cats and see how he fares.

Wolfiefan · 05/08/2017 22:11

So he's allergic but you still want a cat? What happens if his asthma worsens and you have to get rid of the cat? No breed can be guaranteed not to trigger asthma. It's not all about the fur. You can be allergic to saliva.
Maybe consider a different pet.

Hulder · 05/08/2017 22:12

Depends on whether cats are a trigger for his asthma or not. Seeing as he has been wheezy in the past, sounds like they are.

I have asthma and am currently sat with 2 kittens on my bed and old cat downstairs.

But if one of my triggers was cats, honestly, I wouldn't do it. Yes you can up your inhaler regime/take antihistamines but it's still a life of misery and risk. In spring when I'm allergic to flowers in my village I've been unable to walk 10 yds without rescue puffs and ended up on steroids. It's grim. I used to be alright with horses, now I'm not. That was really painful to give up but it was madness to try and carry on.

Asthma kills. Get a different pet.

Florriesma · 05/08/2017 22:13

Is he definitely allergic to cats? Has he had them before?
Thats the first thing to know before anyone can advise. I have asthma. I can be very irritated by cats and dogs but it depends in the fur. Im better with long haired animals.

kali110 · 05/08/2017 22:13

Meant a blood test we have several cats lol
Everyone is different.
I get a little itchy in the summer when rabbits shed their winter fur, but no asthma attacks.
Your dh could be different though.
He needs to find out before taking anything on.
That would be very unfair onthe cat.

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:13

Thanks NC4

Do you get a chance to spend time with a kitten before you take it home?

OP posts:
Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:14

Ok so it sounds like a blood test is in order before we are kitten ready.

OP posts:
kali110 · 05/08/2017 22:14

And your dh.
What hapens if he has a serious attack?

NC4now · 05/08/2017 22:16

Actually, despite my previous comment I do agree. You don't mess around with asthma.
Worth getting a test..
