We are keen to get a rescue kitten but should we be considering a particular breed?

Hulder good advice. Health first. Asthma attacks are not funny.

wolfie also sound advice. We could not re home nor could we risk a dead DH.

At a rescue, not much. You wander about a bit, spot a kitten and that's it.

Ours weren't ready yet so we went back for a few days and played with them but honestly the kittens could have lived without it as they were scared of us

It might be long enough to trigger a wheeze and then again it might not. If he gets wheezy just from going round the rescue centre where they put a lot of effort into cleaning up, then it's an absolute no.

karma your name sticks out as DH loves all cats! Ultimate karma.

Hold on that should have been irony!

I have asthma and am really poorly if I'm around cats, I'd advise against it, I know I'd not like to suffer daily x

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:21

Not karma! DH dishes out no bad bad karma.

Have a blood tests, that should say if you're allergic.
That will be a start, then you could visit people with to see how he is around them?

Liara · 05/08/2017 22:25

There is a breed of cats that are supposedly hypoallergenic. A good breeder will give you a lot of chances to test yourself with the kitten before you commit to taking him home, and will take them back if they go on to give you allergies.

I know you said you wanted a rescue, but in this situation a specific breed would make more sense.

Liara · 05/08/2017 22:25

Sorry, forgot to mention the breed! duh. It's siberians. Big lovely cats too.

Matronlittletimeaway · 05/08/2017 22:29

Liara excellent and now obvious plan suggested by you. Maybe we spend time with some neighbour cats.

Don't want to squeeze DH's airways though.

Thank you for the advice. x

Liara isn't it the hairless cat? As it's hairless? Also because the salvia diesn't cause allergic reactions either?
You have to find out out first though!
Im asthmatic and not allergic to cats!
I would never have even known i was allergic to rabbits if i hadn't have had the blood test.

Wolfiefan · 05/08/2017 23:30

No. The saliva of some of these cats may be less likely to provoke an allergic reaction. There's no such thing as a hypo allergenic cat.

thereallochnessmonster · 05/08/2017 23:34

I'm asthmatic and used to havecats. I was always sneezing, coughing, eyes weeping, wheezing.

Now we have no cats my asthma up almost gone.

Asthma goes hand in hand with many allergies.

I wouldn't get a cat if your dh has asthma...

WiganPierre · 05/08/2017 23:42

My DH has asthma and he is fine with cats, I have friends with asthma who are fine with their cats too, it's very individual so he needs to get tested and see how he gets on with cats. Could he cat sit for a few days at someone's home while they're on holiday, for instance?

Wolfiefan · 05/08/2017 23:44

Wigan OP said he reacted badly to cats in the home as a child.

Fatjilly · 07/08/2017 10:43

I'm asthmatic and I'm allergic to loads of things including cats but I've had pets all my life. When I moved into my first bedsit and I wasn't around anything furry my allergies worsened. I then took on an indoor cat and spent a couple of weeks wheezing and sneezing until my tolerance built up again. Haven't been without pets since and it's been fine.
