Is four too many cats?

Ok I'm the worst fosterer ever. There's no way I can give up the little stray that I've been rearing I think once you've wiped somethings bum to make it wee then you have a bond.
But I've also fallen in love with another of the kittens who is just the sweetest little thing, so cuddly and affectionate with the softest fur, I lurve her and I need to keep her.

That will mean I have four cats, that's an acceptable number right??

I am savagely manipulated by the one I have. Am considering adding a kitten but four would be too much for me!

Moose23 · 30/06/2017 13:45

Oh my they are so cute.

And the big black man cat is mammoth!!! Love his big man cat expression.. "who you callin' slinky? I don't slink for nobody.."

Pandsbear · 30/06/2017 14:24

It's not the number of cats as such, it is the COST of the food and the vet and the insurance etc etc multiplied up! We have two, I would have more...

SentientCushion · 30/06/2017 14:32

The cost isn't an issue really. We don't have kids or a life. X

Op I think you should have 4 and then maybe try for a 5th later on.

I'm down to 2 after losing my beautiful Kenneth last week. Perhaps in 10 years Or so I will think of getting another.

Yours are lovely btw.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/06/2017 14:40

Monkey your grey panthers are wonderful - I wouldn't have given them back after fostering either.

toofarfromcivilisation · 30/06/2017 14:43

I love cats.
I don't have any because my husband doesn't like cats.
I can tell that people have cats as soon as I walk through the door because I can smell them.
The more cats they have, the more the house smells.
If you're happy with cat smell have as many as you want.

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/06/2017 14:45

I've got four and would love more but I really don't have room for more.

SentientCushion · 30/06/2017 14:49

Hahaha I let a cat give birth in my spare room and now have 6 barely litter trained kittens in there. If my house doesn't already smell rather disgustingly of cats by now I'd be stunned Wink

One for each windowsill is the Official Calculation to find your optimum number OP. I'm working on it Grin. I'm more concerned that my home doesn't smell of Stinky Boy that cat (or dog). Meh.

Jux · 30/06/2017 15:02

Oh no, this dreadful. We have 3 and dh has decided that is enough. I kind of agreed with him, and dd almost agreed too. Now I want another.

This thread has told me I can have another cat. It's actually told me I could have another two.

DH will never forgive me. I am lost.........

SentientCushion · 30/06/2017 15:13

Yay I have four windowsills!

OP posts:
IHeartDodo · 30/06/2017 15:28

I like the windowsills rule!
We have 2 cats and 4 windowsills - 2 back and 2 front. They both like to be on the side of the house that has the sun, and refuse to share, so I think we're at ca(t)pacity!
DP says no more cats, after we took in a stray from my sister. But he has joked (or maybe it was serious?) about a ginger kitten...

WhenLoveAndCakeCollide · 30/06/2017 15:58

We have eight cats. We're lucky to have a large home, so there is plenty of room for them.

DH originally said 'no more' when we had six, but he saw two cats available at a local animal shelter, featured in a local newspaper. They captured his heart and that was that.

Eight is our limit though, as we have other animals too.

madcapcat · 30/06/2017 15:59

We have 7 windowsills and two cats that never sit on them - does that mean I can have 7 more ?? Smile DH would kill me though....

Clalpolly · 30/06/2017 16:07

Ambassador, with these photos you are spoiling us.

I love black cats, tuxies, and black and whites, the hardest to home yet the most loving.

TheWernethWife · 30/06/2017 16:08

Three cats at the moment, have had up to six in the past. Have a yearning for a nice ginger cat or a tabby one, have names already picked out..

problembottom · 30/06/2017 16:39

That kitten has THE cutest paws. I have one cat and I don't think he would like another sadly. He's pretty high maintenance on his own.

I have thought tho that next time around (when the unthinkable happens) I might adopt a brood of waifs and strays. It goes hand in hand with my plan to buy a big house on a leafy street in our village. DP is against both ideas but he'll cope.

My friend is also keen for us to open a cat cafe together.

HotelEuphoria · 30/06/2017 16:42

I have three, 2 are grumpy females and one of those is old and has started shitting everywhere.

The youngest at 8 months old is a massive, all black gentle giant looks very like yours OP. He is an adorable simple softy and I love him dearly.

Three is enough for me though in view of the shitting old lady. When she goes I may get another gentle giant for my big simpleton to play with.

Wolfiefan · 30/06/2017 16:44

Totally depends on the cats. Some are happier than others in a multi cat household. We had four cats growing up. I have two now. One would prefer to be an only.

EnormousDormouse · 30/06/2017 16:46

The electronic catflap has room for 32 identity chips in its memory. DP is slightly worried that is see this as a challenge.

Oldgranny · 30/06/2017 17:12

No my friend just got her fifth

Any advice from those of you with several cats on how to get them to live together happily? We had a pair of kittens, one got run over at one year old, and the remaining one seemed lost on her own. We got another rescue cat aged approx two. We've had her for about six months. The old cat hisses at her, the new cat chases, old cat wees on beds and sofas in protest. Done all the stuff like Felliway diffusers, separate litter trays and feeding areas, separate sleeping areas etc. Will it get better in time? Anything else I can do?
