Why do people tutt and shake their heads when they see my baby?!!

It's everywhere I take her the vet nurse said oh a tortie and they all started giggling. The vet said fiesty even though she behaved beautifully. Then today when I went to pick her up from the cattery when I went to pay the woman took my card and said "you know Dolly is a long haired tortoishell don't you?" I said "I don't really know cats" and she snorted. Have I let myself in for something? Is this why she was at the shelter all on her own? She's so shy she runs if you even look at her I can't imagine her giving me any trouble. Just look at the innocence

My vet said they call them Naughty Torties

ShowOfHands · 28/06/2017 18:33

My long haired tortie and white is the most placid cat alive. Nobody ever giggles at her.

Poppins2016 · 28/06/2017 18:41

Tortoiseshells do seem to have a bit of a reputation! However mine is (mostly) as good as gold.

Dolly looks beautiful, you have chosen well in my opinion!

FidgetSpinner · 28/06/2017 18:43

Gorgeous! I love torties and their strange ways Smile

BlueKarou · 28/06/2017 18:43

My tortie was called a naughty tortie by the first vet she saw. She's a nervy thing, not lived up to her reputation at all!

MollyMooDog · 28/06/2017 18:45

Oh what a beauty, reminds me of my tortie years ago. She was a rescue and was one of the most laid back loving cats I'd ever owned. Out of them all she is the one I think about the most. I've never heard of them having a reputation!

sloanewarrior · 28/06/2017 18:47

She does have a delightfully cheeky look in her eye OP! Grin

abbsisspartacus · 28/06/2017 18:52

My tortie managed to hook her own claw through her own paw the same paw as the claw the vet said she was talented Hmm

EachandEveryone · 28/06/2017 18:57

She can hold her own against her big sister I'll give her that. She's also a lot brighter than my Daphne she plays on her own a lot and knows how to work the puzzle toys which Daph still can't fathom out. She's very difficult to get hold of to pick up and cuddle though and I've been told I have to do that or else she won't socialise.

Torties are beautiful cats. I had a shortie tortie and she was very shy but so sweet and a real lap cat when no one else was around. Dolly does look very cheeky.

PicInAttic · 28/06/2017 23:02

No one told me torties have a reputation for being naughty but mine definitely is! We've christened her Keyser Soze because she's such a manipulative planner; she runs rings around her brother and friend Smile
She's so affectionate though that I don't care. Love my trio of kits.

PicInAttic · 28/06/2017 23:06

This is her plotting her next mission of destruction!

Definitely notorious for being feisty beasts. My one true cat love was a tortie. She died aged 19 a few years ago. Still miss her horribly. She was feisty to the last and smart as you like.

Wolfiefan · 28/06/2017 23:15

You have to pick up a cat and force it to have a cuddle? I wouldn't. Plenty of ways to interact with a cat that doesn't make it feel trapped and scared.
I have two torties. They torment the puppy. She is a 50kg wolfhound! Shock

DrWhooves · 28/06/2017 23:15

My tortie is a wee shit Grin.

When I asked the vet why she was like that I got the "naughty tortie" line. Spent a fortune on those plug in calming things to no effect whatsoever. She did calm down a lot once she was spayed though.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 28/06/2017 23:16

We lived with a very smart tortie. Miss her and think of her fairly often, but she lived to a good old age. I like to think we understood one another one cantankerous old lady to another. Not naughty though.

9GreenBottles · 28/06/2017 23:25

We had a tortie who was neurotic (she overgroomed and vomited mostly every day) but she was a lovely, friendly cat. She was also insanely desperate to eat cheese; she could hear you taking it out of the cellophane wrapper from a deep sleep upstairs Grin

PickAChew · 28/06/2017 23:27

Our tortie was the cuddliest little thing. For about 34 minutes and 8 seconds, at which point, she'd leap up and cling onto your arm with every single claw and try to chew your thumb off.

She'd hide in my bedroom and I'd wake up with her hogging hte pillow with her claws in my head if I tried to push it back on. Her favourite way of waking me up in the morning was chewing my eyebrows.

But she liked to put all the local toms in their place.

And she had a wicked way with the wrappers off mars bars and after eights (back when they were all waxed paper) if you screwed them in a ball. She'd bat them around the room and chase after them. She played like a kitten right up until she was so old it was clearly difficult and uncomfortable for her. We did have to remove those oh so fashionable in the 80s tassels from the bottom of our sofa, mind.

And her sleeping positions were the funniest. We had a staircase with newell posts which were as flat as these on top and she'd perch on top of one on all fours and nod off, quite literally, nose first - she did it at the top of the sairs, once and came flying down like a squirrel! She also liked to sleep on top of the speakers of our massive HiFi if we played classical music!

I won't force her to cuddle but I have been advised to try and pick her up when she's near but she's too quick!shes very smart and is teaching the bigger one afew things like how to bury your poo! She's in the tray for hours!!and she eats like a dream. We are in a flat so it might get interesting. I need more shelves I suspect although she has no interest in climbing yet.

Why would you try and pick up a cat that doesn't want you to? It won't socialise them. Just make them more eager to stay out of your reach. Confused

Want2beme · 28/06/2017 23:53

Wolfiefan many moons ago, I was advised to do that, strangely enough with my tortie, who didn't like physical contact. The theory being that the more physical contact a cat has, the more it'll want and the less wild it'll be.

EachandEveryone · 29/06/2017 00:13

Yes they said it at the rescue then the vet then the cattery yesterday. They all told me these are the important weeks and she needs to be handled as much as possible. She's fine once once she has been picked up but the minute u bend down to pick her up she's off so it's not very often I do hold her. The other one comes all the time to be picked up
