Why do people tutt and shake their heads when they see my baby?!!

It's everywhere I take her the vet nurse said oh a tortie and they all started giggling. The vet said fiesty even though she behaved beautifully. Then today when I went to pick her up from the cattery when I went to pay the woman took my card and said "you know Dolly is a long haired tortoishell don't you?" I said "I don't really know cats" and she snorted. Have I let myself in for something? Is this why she was at the shelter all on her own? She's so shy she runs if you even look at her I can't imagine her giving me any trouble. Just look at the innocence

I had a long haired tortie and she was wonderful. Very bright and loyal. And very affectionate (but on her terms.)
The DC's loved her. She would trail around after them for hours on end and if they were ever poorly would lie next to them till they felt better.

Torties tend to assertive cats who like everything on their terms. If you can persuade them that something was there idea in the first place it is always better.

You have to be able to pick a cat up, in case of emergencies. Imagine a house fire, cat is panicking & you need to get it out of the house. Or an emergency trip to the vets, when you can't get them into the crate.

My 2 were untouchable when I brought them home. They both love stroking now, Girlcat is quite happy to be picked up & put on my lap for a short while & I always let her off the moment she asks, and Boycat is just starting to accept both hands round his middle & taking a little bit of weight.

My gran had a little tortoiseshell who lived to be 19 and ruled the entire neighbourhood with a rod of iron. She was awesome.

Tortoiseshell cats are really interesting! They are overwhelmingly female because their coat pattern depends on their XX genes. You can get a boy tortie but he will be sterile.

Maybe people are just scared of strong, independent female cats ;)

So cute OP. Now I want a tortie too Grin

SleepFreeZone · 29/06/2017 12:18

Never heard this before. We had a tortoiseshell and she was as mild mannered as could be.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 14:23

We've had 2 torties, both of whom live up to their feisty reputation. The first one was sent to live with my mum after a week of having her because she beat up all the other five cats we had (all boys and twice her size). We got her because she was kicked out of her original house by her own daughter, who was also a tortie.

The second one is just as bad and she comes for a cuddle on my lap and when she's had enough she'll slap me across the face before jumping off.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/06/2017 14:24

Also forgot to mention that when I took the tortie we have now to the vet for fight injuries, the vet looked at her, sniggered and said 'tortie, what a surprise, I'd hate to see the state of the other guy'.

esk1mo · 29/06/2017 14:28

google tortitude and you'll find out why.

i am owned by a tortie cat Grin very vocal, bossy, confident but also loyal and sweet.

bushtailadventures · 29/06/2017 14:36

We have 2, one very much like yours. The one like yours is lovely, she comes for a cuddle when I am at the computer. However she can turn in a second and will bite whatever is handy, be it chin, hand, arm, etc. She loves my eldest DS to distraction and has destroyed his bedroom door trying to get in when he is asleep. Wouldn't be without her for anything, she's wonderful!

ElizaDontlittle · 29/06/2017 14:42

She's beautiful!
My crazycat is a tortie - at her first cattery they had her down as a "hissy missy" - she's very loyal, attached and affectionate but to me only. I think she's beautiful and she and I have long miaowy chats and soothing snuggles!

EachandEveryone · 29/06/2017 16:19

So when do they start to talk both of my cats don't make a sound is there something wrong with them?
