Cat seems unbothered by hot weather??

Hello all

Am I being neurotic about this? My furry little weirdo seems completely un-bothered by this weather, whilst I am worrying about heat stroke and dehydration.

We had a cat flap fitted last week, and between that and the fine weather, she's fully treating us like a b&b at the moment. So she's out all day somewhere (apart from a few snack visits) in the blazing heat, comes in and scoffs dinner, retreats to the sun lounger for a while or chases bugs then disappears again. Food consumption suggests she comes back in at least once in the night, and this morning I found her asleep on the sofa (then she promptly went out again!). Happy as larry from what I see of her at the moment (she's definitely a puss who likes her freedom).

She's jet black as well, which boggles me as I would expect her to be feeling rotten and just flop somewhere.

She has a cat fountain indoors and a bowl of water outside but she's refusing most of her wet food and only eating her biscuits (which she vastly prefers anyway). I've no idea how much she's actually drinking and she rarely uses the litter tray anymore so I can't check if she's peeing ok.

Does anyone else have a cat that seems part-desert animal?? Confused

Mine don't seem remotely fussed either, which has thrown me, as my old cats HATED hot weather.

Purrlock has spent most of the day asleep on the windowsill (the hottest space the house) and I found Layla burrowed under the duvet this morning!

Both black cats too, but they don't seem to be affected. They've been eating/drinking as usual so maybe they're just furry weirdos!

choccyTeapot · 21/06/2017 21:43

Good to know she's in good furry little weirdo company Grin Maybe it's a random black cat thing....

And Purrlock...brilliant name!!

I'll try to put on my big girl pants and stop fretting so much. Am heavily pregnant and miserable myself so it's possible I'm projecting, hah.

Yes, neurotic (trying to say that nicely).

Feral cats are a huge problem in outback Australia. They seem to thrive in spite of 45+ degrees & very little water.

Reow · 21/06/2017 21:46

Mine is livid. He is a grumpy grumpy beast.

I just got hissed at for giving him his usual door step bum scratch.

He can only manage up to 25 degrees.

choccyTeapot · 21/06/2017 21:48

Brexit Thank you, I suspected as much Grin but DH isn't here tonight to fulfil his role in telling me that!

It's natural to worry!

My old cats hated it and one got really sick during a heatwave a couple of years ago (not directly heat related, but it makes me worry in case it happens again).

But my two seem to be fine. Here is Purrlock enjoying a box earlier this evening :)

Cats ARE part desert animal you big numpty Grin (Well, savannah rather than true desert, but it's still a big hot dry place.)

caffeine What a gorgeous boy! This is my FLW in bug hunting mode earlier

My two could be mistaken for furry rugs at the moment, they lie motionless on the carpet for hours.
We do have big trees in the garden so they can go out and lie in the shade.
Smoky has had his trousers shaved as they dreadlocked again so he is much more comfortable, I put ice in their water bowl and they just sit and stare at it.

caffeinestream · 21/06/2017 22:33

Aww he's lovely @choccyTeapot! How old is he?

HemanOrSheRa · 21/06/2017 22:38

My two aren't botheyed in the slightest. Frankie is just over 2 years old and is having a fabulous time. He was just getting used to The Outside last summer. Pippa is about 10 years old and is an old hand at draping herself on the front garden wall to get attention from passersby Grin.

choccyTeapot · 21/06/2017 23:00

Thanks! I don't tell her she's a pretty kitty at least once a day, honest... She's about 2 and a half but rescue so no idea on exact.

I am now reassured I do not need to be fanning her or forcing ice cubes down her throat (as if she'd let me!) Grin

I watched an interesting documentary about cats a few years ago, apparently they can tolerate high temps which is why they can lie in the baking sun like a melted puddle without batting an eyelid.

Mine keep trying to lie on me at night and are most annoyed that I'm not using the duvet as they can't get under it with me. Woke up this morning with a roasting head as one had decided to sleep on top of my head on the pillow.

They have been coming in and lounging on the hall floor when they get too hot then sod off out again to find a sun trap. Bloody nutters.

Iflyaway · 21/06/2017 23:06

Cats come from Egypt - of course they're not bothered! Grin

God, I love cats!!

BertieBotts · 21/06/2017 23:09

Like a melted puddle :D :D

ragged · 22/06/2017 04:13

if tabby cats only emerged in last 100 years, what did cats look like before that?!

Broken11Girl · 22/06/2017 04:30

Yy, cats are descended from Asia & Africa. My tortie Madam isn't bothered at all. She's quite happy to sleep all day then disappear out from 7pm ish, not to be seen until I've convinced myself she's met a horrible end about now.

Broken11Girl · 22/06/2017 04:35

Haha Bertie, excellent.
Madam has definitely been puddling.
Yy, I feel like I'm running a cat hotel most of the summer.

MandyLove19 · 22/06/2017 04:40

My fur baby loves the heat too! I always gotta give him a lil spritz of water and rub it in his fur so he doesn't get too overheated! Works very well.

Cantseethewoods · 22/06/2017 04:54

Mine used to sit pressed up to the radiator and heat his fur up so much that you couldnt even touch him.

But yes, cats love heat, hate cold.

Germgirl · 22/06/2017 06:40

PicklePig ^hates* this heat, he whines mournfully at me, begging me to make it colder and then dramatically flomps down in front of the fan.
Often the fan isn't on but he doesn't seem to notice.
He's developed a weird 'my arms are missing' pose that he only adopts when he's too hot.
I've tried misting him with water but he thought I was trying to drown him (with a light misting from a tiny little pink bottle) so I gave that one up.
At 3am however he suddenly decides he's a bit chilly and drapes himself all over me in bed. Which is lovely in this heat.

Mine is spending more time than usual sprawled on the stone floor in the kitchen. It doesn't seem to have slowed down his one cat killing spree though. In fact he's bringing in mice in the afternoon as well as the evening now, so worse, if anything. My house is old and cool though, so maybe short bursts of activity before returning to cool down?

HemanOrSheRa · 22/06/2017 16:05

Hehe! I'm imagining PicklePig throwing himself down like a sulky teen 'Gah. It's too hot. It's so lame and NOW MY ARMS ARE MISSING! It's sooooo unfair. I hate my life'.

LivingInMidnight · 22/06/2017 16:30

I've got one that flops and one b&b one, except only the breakfast part. It's cooler today and we've had a bit of rain so b&b is actually sleeping here and floppy is following me round and very chatty.
