Bob Martin Spot on - I am terrified!

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 21:57

I administered Bob Martin's Spot on for fleas to my cat earlier today. She's had lots of similar stuff in the past but not this (she is 13). She has been sleeping or drowsy ever since.

I love my cat but my DD (at university) loves her more than anything in the world. Is this a normal side effect? Should I be as worried as I am?

Glad she's better. Bob Martin products are so strong. Try Stronghold or similar from vet. Hope you manage sleep tonight. She'll probably be purring all over you.

WowserBowser · 15/05/2017 22:53

I used some Bob Martin stuff when my cat had fleas. My friend then messaged to say whatever you do don't use BM. Which shocked me as it was all Sainsburys had so i assumed it would be fine.

She was absolutely off her tits all night. Trying to leap out windows, running around everywhere. Never seen her like that in 2 years of having her. It was utterly bizarre. But she suffered no ill effects.

Good luck with your wee one. Im sure she'll be ok.

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 22:54

She is purring loudly but still drowsy! You're right Wolfie it's the not being able to ask her. She's probably normal for this time of night now, but I keep prodding her. Ugh, I must stop this and take us both to bed.

Thank you again.

You know you will keep waking and checking she's breathing. In the morning you will feel like shit and she will be full of the joys after a comfy night on the bed.
Buggers. Each and every one. Grin

Maudlinmaud · 15/05/2017 22:56

Had no idea about the bob martin side effects. Dh gets some sort of syringe thing off the vets for out cats. Hope it all turns out ok op.

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 22:58

Yes Wolfie I bet you're right about tonight! Great timing as I have a hot date tomorrow and I'll be shattered.

I'm taking my hopefully recovering girl to bed now.

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 15/05/2017 22:59

Night night OP
Hope the date goes well. Avoid muttering about Bob Martin and drowsy cats. Grin

BertieBotts · 15/05/2017 23:02

I thought this stuff was bloody banned Angry can't believe they are still allowed to sell it TBH.

Glad to hear your girl is alright :)

Wish I'd asked on here before buying this horrible stuff. As a PP said, because it's in all the supermarkets I thought it was ok!!

avamiah · 15/05/2017 23:08

Lobster,
Sorry to hear about this but glad she is ok.
I have 3 cats and always give them the flee treatment and worming treatments from the vet as the treatment dose depends on their weight and the vet weighs them before prescribing.

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 23:13

I shall definitely be consulting my vet! I cannot sleep and she is so surprised to be allowed on my bed that she is conducting an extensive grooming session Smile

OP posts:
dailydance · 15/05/2017 23:22

Lobster - check if your vet does a payment plan. Many do - you get six months of flea treatment & de-wormer, along with their annual boosters and a check up & dental check every 6 months. I think I pay 15 or 20 per month (not sure), per cat. It works out cheaper in the long run anyhow.

dailydance · 15/05/2017 23:25

Make sure her grooming session does not include her neck :)

She'll be fine I'm sure. I use Advocate on all of mine. I had to rinse one of them once because she has a scrawny neck and she was able to lick it after I put it on slightly left of centre :(. I know how you feel.. I had my eyes glued to her all night after that

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 23:27

dailydance thank you, I will - I've been far too ad hoc with her flea treatments. Kind of, get some stuff when I see fleas.

These little demon animals. I have been so stressed I'm not tired, and I keep putting my hand on her to check she's still breathing and she has started to attack me (not unreasonably). Sigh. What Wolfie said.

thecatneuterer · 15/05/2017 23:30

The horror stories are not only when the dog version is used on cats. The old formulation of Bob Martins used to kill a small percentage of the cats it was used on. And I have seen a few examples of cats dying in front of me because of it.

They however changed their formulation a few years ago and now it is harmless but useless. However some other off the shelf flea treatments still contain the dangerous ingredient (permethrin). Oh, and they also don't work on fleas.

If you want to buy something without going to a vet then get Advantage. Or from a vet Stronghold.

I'm glad your cat is OK.

thecatneuterer · 15/05/2017 23:31

Oh yes, Advocate is good too.

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 23:34

Oh goodness catneuterer just when I thought we were out of the woods. I put the stuff on her at midday - is there a timeframe after which she should be ok? I can see I'll be waking the poor cat up all night ....

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 15/05/2017 23:36

As long as the Bob Martin you used wasn't more than three or four years old it will be fine anyway - it will be the new formulation. But yes, the reaction is quicker than that. She will be fine.

dailydance · 15/05/2017 23:38

This is what my vets use for their payment plan - I think a lot use this type:

LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 23:39

I bought it today - I didn't check for any date on it though. I just have this huge fear now that she will stop breathing. I really swear this is worse than any night with DD. At least I wouldn't have kept waking her up for my own reassurance.

OP posts:
LobsterQuadrille · 15/05/2017 23:40

Thank you for the link dailydance.

OP posts:
thecatneuterer · 15/05/2017 23:42

I'm quite sure that nothing will be for sale that is that old. And the reaction to permethrin is a few hours. The active ingredient in what you have will be fipronil, which fleas have become immune to, but at least it's not dangerous. Seriously, don't worry!

thecatneuterer · 15/05/2017 23:43

Oh, and the reaction is convulsions - it's very obvious. It's not a case of just stopping breathing.

MartyrStewart · 15/05/2017 23:43

Hope kitty is OK xx
