My beautiful boy is gone

I don't normally post on here but I am so sad I need to share.

My 18 year old boy passed away today. It has hit me harder than I expected. He preceded DH by some years. He weathered 6 house moves, 2 other cats, the arrival of three children in quick succession (who he later adored) as well as surviving being hit by a car (He saw me coming home and ran across the road to greet me). He used to wait at the end of the road every day for me to come back from the morning school run, and again in the afternoon. Our whole street knew and loved him. I miss him so much already Sad

Black cats are so beautiful. Old girl was 20 when she went and left a space, even though she was a malevolent, cantankerous, hairy, pet cushion for all the interaction she had with me in her two decades.
I loved her.

Ruhrpott · 28/04/2017 22:37

We chose a new kitten and an older rescue cat from the rescue lady today. I can't stand not having a cat around and from next week we'll have two. The kitten was found at two weeks wandering alone and was bottle fed and the old cat had an owner with dementia who went into a nursing home. Here's a photo of the kitten for you all, though no cat will ever replace my old one.

It's so difficult when you go home without your Dcat. You can't explain to your remaining Dcats what's happened. It's heartbreaking. Lots of hugs & reassurance, I suppose.

WatcherOfTheNight · 29/04/2017 02:38

I'm so sorry Op & all the other posters,it is truly heartbreaking losing a pet, especially after so many years.

Our old girl died last year, she was 22,I still miss her terribly, such a sweet cat.
I thought I caught glimpses of her for months out of the corner of my eye & often automatically got her dish out when feeding the dogs.

I've recently adopted 2 rescue kittens as I couldn't be feline free any longer.

MymbleClement · 29/04/2017 07:41

Sorry for your loss Watcher 22 is an amazing age!

DS1 has already said he thought he'd seen him coming into the kitchen Sad I'm going to bury his bowl with his ashes as I can't bear to see it.

Rurhpott - so sorry to hear your sad loss, I know it's not easy. I know you can't replace your old companion, but I hope you will enjoy your new buddies. That's a gorgeous little kitten, you were lucky to get her as she'd have been chosen very quickly.

Watcher, sorry to hear about your lovely girl. You can't replace them, but I totally understand you can't be feline free. My husband says we can't have any more after we loose our other cat, as he wants to be free to travel when he retires in eight years time. I have a back up plan, adopt an older kitty or two , that way I'll still have my feline company and maybe we can travel, assuming he can retire early!

Mymble - how's your other cat this morning? My girl has turned her sleeping position to face the cat flap and keeps looking at it. Also, she's been in the hall a couple of times looking upstairs were Toby used to sleep. They were siblings who never seemed to get on, but she's always had him around.

AliCat36 · 29/04/2017 10:35

When you get another one it's not to replace the one you lost, it's a tribute to them because they gave you so much love & left such a huge hole in your life that you need another furry to love and fill that gap. I'm sure the ones you lost would want you to give the same love and happiness to another.

Trustyourself2 · 29/04/2017 10:59

I used to see my beautiful boy all the time, still do now and then. I find it comforting now, but I wish he was still here.

Ruhrpott · 29/04/2017 11:08

I'm so sorry for us all going through this. I think I see mine all the time out of the corner of my eye and automatically look for him when I wake up.
I got a bit of priority on choosing the kitten as I have fostered for the local cat lady before, have donated to her vet bills and I was willing to take on the older lady too (who is lovely but has no teeth!). She knows we dote on the cats and was really happy they were coming to us.

Trustyourself2 · 29/04/2017 11:25

Ruhrpott you're lovely. Can't wait to see a pic of your older lady. Your little kit is sooo cute.

Ruhrpott · 29/04/2017 11:29

I pick them up next Sunday as we are away this week. Here is a photo of her I took at the foster ladies flat but she blends in with the floor so it's not that good.

I'm so sorry, it's just so painful. Flowers

MymbleClement · 29/04/2017 20:44

Tiger he's still quite withdrawn. He wasn't indoors at all today, which is unusual. They used to sleep very close together, paws touching etc. He has given DS1 a lot of comfort today though. They've snuggled up together all evening.

I'm very sorry. He was a beautiful cat.

jaffacake2 · 30/04/2017 22:48

My lovely Cat Jaffa died today aged 16 . His back legs became paralysed due to either a spinal malignancy or a blood clot. I decided to have him put to sleep as he was distressed and confused why he couldn't walk.
Feeling lost without him ,he really was,a very special furry friend .

Gah81 · 30/04/2017 22:57

Sending Flowers to all of you who have lost their much-loved cats. Am so sorry for your losses - they all look like gorgeous creatures.

My lady is getting on now and my heart breaks at the thought of the inevitable. They really do leave little paw prints on your heart.

Want2beme · 30/04/2017 23:08

jaffacake2 I'm so sorry. What a dreadful day you must be having. Take care of yourself. He was a beautiful lad.

MymbleClement · 30/04/2017 23:18

jaffacake2 I'm so sorry Sad The feeling of loss is shockingly raw isn't it? You were brave to make the decision, it's bloody hard but it was the best decision for him. Feel free to pm me or share on here if you want to talk about him. I've found talking about my boy has made it easier to handle his passing.

I'm so sorry, jaffa.

GreenPolishToGo · 30/04/2017 23:50

You made the right decision jaffacake2 but it doesn't make losing your beautiful cat any less painful. I am so sorry.

prettybird · 30/04/2017 23:50

They leave a hole, don't they.

I know you're not supposed to have favourites, but our favourite got knocked down and killed on 31 August last year. He was only 9 but a fabulous big softy. He had velvet paws - never put his claws out except, very carefully, a single claw on my bare back never dh's when he wanted me to lift the duvet cover so that he could decide not to go under. Even his breeder said he'd been special, even as a very young kitten. He was so loving and friendly - and that in the end was what killed him Sad We found out that he'd been visiting a nursery two streets away - and it was while he was crossing the road (not darting across) he was witnessed being knocked down by a speeding car (going at about 60mph in a city street past a nursery and a lollipop lady crossing ShockAngry). Fortunately the nursery manager took him to be scanned for a chip - and fortuitously the nursery manager took it to the vet practice we use.

Our other cat (who ironically had only started liking him after the cat older than her died) was soooo lonely - Siamese like company.

We've only just got some new kittens (semi rescue in that they were 6.5 months old). A month later, the old cat (who is 13 now) is still not exactly being welcoming towards them but at least she's stopped doing her heartbreaking "Where is he?" yowl.

The first picture was taken about 2 weeks before he was killed. I'd cleared the two planters at the door and run out of plants for one - and he decided he liked it. The other pictures of him with his "sister" and then the 2 new kittens on their first outing outside (a few days ago - they needed their feline leukaemia jabs before we could let them out).

We still miss him. I've had Siamese cats for over 50 years since I was a wee girl. None has left as big a hole. Sad
