We've adopted a kitten!

So today this beautiful little girl came to join our family. We are totally in love!

A couple of questions if you don't mind as we've never had a kitten before, our existing cat was an adult rescue.

We are told she's 9 weeks old but she looks TINY and I'm worried she may be younger, what age do their eyes normally change colour? Hers are still blue but not bright kitten blue you can see they are changing.

Also she's very very fluffy. Could she possibly be longhaired? Her mother was shorthaired so I didn't think she could be but a few people have commented that she's really fluffy. Is it just kitten fluff as I assumed?

And finally she needs a name so we can't stop calling her kitten. We like real names, pretty and girly, but can't think of any! Our existing cat is Lola and we've previously had a Mia if that gives an idea as to the type we like. Can't decide what she looks like although her personality is leaning me towards naming her minx!

Tuck her under the duvet next to your body. She'll likely fall asleep. Smile

Aah! She's very sweet! 512g is tiny though. Like other posters said she's lively and happy and will likely always be small. I work with cats and kittens and we don't let them go until vaccine aged which is usually 9 was and over a kg. Saying that,as other posters said, she is likely naturally small- we had some kittens who didn't reach a kg until 13 weeks. I would suggest weighing her weekly she should put on around 100g + per week. She's lovely!

CatchingBabies · 20/04/2017 12:39

Thanks for the advice I will definitely keep weighing her. We have a vet appointment for first vaccination this afternoon but I'm not sure they will be able to do it. At least she will get a check over though.

Ooh let me know if they do as we struggle to get them done much under a kilo with our various vets here so that would be interesting to know!

dementedpixie · 20/04/2017 14:06

I'm sure mine were under 1kg when they got their first injections at 8 weeks.

cozietoesie · 20/04/2017 15:01

Maybe if you knew they were 8 weeks, they could go by that - whereas, if their age was less certain, other factors such as weight etc would come into play?

CatchingBabies · 20/04/2017 16:05

So vet check went well. She hasn't had her first vaccination as she is too small. The vet said weight dosnt matter too much it's maturity but she's too small to be 9 weeks old so he dosnt want to do it just yet. He's asked me to keep an eye on her weight and make sure she's gaining.

Oh and the vet thought she is longhaired but only time will tell really as she's very fluffy but not as fluffy as longhaired kittens I've seen on google images. Just can't stop stroking that belly though!!

Whatever she may be, she's just a honeybunch. Smile

cozietoesie · 20/04/2017 16:46

Did the people you had her from have her mother and just made a mistake about her age then?

dementedpixie · 20/04/2017 16:49

When we first got ours we were told they were girls and named them dawn and Luna. The vet then told us they were boys so we had to change the names to storm and Dusty instead

CatchingBabies · 20/04/2017 17:11

The woman I got her from is adamant she is 9 weeks but she's just small. She's showed me a vet invoice of the mother being neutered 5 weeks ago and the kittens being worked and flea treated 3 weeks ago. I guess there is no way to know 100%z

Well she's making me very broody, that's for sure!

cozietoesie · 20/04/2017 17:29

You've done your best then. Good luck to her.

SapphireStrange · 20/04/2017 18:40

She's adorable. Zelda?

Reow · 20/04/2017 18:41

Her ears are fucking awesome

Reow · 20/04/2017 18:42

(I'd have a kitten over a newborn baby any day Grin)

HemanOrSheRa · 20/04/2017 18:47

And me Reow. That is one of the reasons why I have 1 DC but 2 cats and a dog. With hankerings for another cat. That is awful isn't it? GrinWink

Reow · 20/04/2017 18:52

It's not awful at all Heman! Grin

Kittens are way cuter, cost less, don't need their arses changing, don't back chat, and wash themselves!

Gimme 10 kittens over a baby any day

To reply to the previous poster.vets will vaccinate if you know they are 8/9 weeks otherwise they use the 1kg weight as a guide.

Badcat666 · 20/04/2017 19:25

She may just be a teeny kitty. My beloved kitty was a runt of the litter and at 12 weeks could fit in the palm of my hand. Vet loved him and would take him round to meet all the staff whenever I took him in so he could show them how small he was because no one believed him. When he went for his 6mth checkup up he was the size of a proper 12 week old kitty and never got bigger than a 6 month old. Didn't stop him from being bonkers tho!!

Also recommend under duvet snuggles, mine would drop off faster than anything when we started doing that.

She is such a cutie op!!!!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 20/04/2017 20:36

Pixie!

CatchingBabies · 20/04/2017 20:59

Her ears are adorable! Her mother was a Siamese looking cat but clearly a cross not purebred and she seems to have inherited the too big for her head ears.
