I can't stop crying

My beautiful, funny, soft hearted cat has just been run over and left to die in the road while I took my DS to school. Came back and found him in the road outside the house still warm. Thank god DS didn't see him but I don't know how I'm going to tell him later, he will be devestated, he adores him.

Gcg90 big hugs to you, I hope you have someone to give you a real hug at home.

It makes me so sad to hear how many of our beautiful animals are just killed without a care. I do understand cats run into roads, we've all seen it, but the difference to me is if someone stops and tries to help as opposed to driving off without a care. Coolcarrie I'm sorry about Daisyut glad that you had a neighbour that cared enough to try and help her. Flowers

Well done, OP,

That must've been gut-wrenching to have to break it to DS, poor chap.

But that's the first step over with.
Have a very well-earned Wine or Gin

Your and DS's ideas for the memorial sound perfect, and a good distraction to plan.

It may not be the sort of thing that appeals to your DS, in which case ignore, but if the need does arise, he may also get some comfort by leaving a little tribute here, knowing that many other pet-lovers will read it and know what a wonderful cat his was:

I am so sorry for all of you who have lost your cats on the road. It happened to me last year with my 2 year old tabby girl. It is so much harder to accept than losing an elderly cat. I try to think now of the lovely life she had even if it was cut short, and she died instantly so wouldn't have known anything about it.

CatsGoPurrrr · 30/03/2017 18:10

I am so sorry for your loss.

I lost our dear boycat the same way.

Oh no! I remember the same happening when my DD was 3. Your DS is obviously a bit older. I'm so sorry - they really are part of the family, aren't they. Flowers

CoolCarrie · 30/03/2017 21:27

Thank you TheSmallPrint
Our neighbour was lovely and kind , even when Daisy keeping setting off her house alarm!
Thank you to ZuZu ( It's A Wonderful Life fan here too) I just had a look at the pet link you put up and have had a wee cry adding my much loved pets. It is a lovely thing to do.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 30/03/2017 21:31

I am so sorry. What a beautiful boy he was.

ZuzuMyLittleGingersnap · 30/03/2017 22:40

Carrie,

No problem. Hope it helps a little.
Sometimes, I think there's comfort in sharing with anonymous people who will empathise totally with how it feels to lose an important companion-friend-pet, even if the individual circumstances differ.

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 30/03/2017 22:43

Oh I'm so sorry ❤️

9GreenBottles · 30/03/2017 22:54

Terrible, terrible news for you. He was a gorgeous boy Flowers

TheSmallPrint · 31/03/2017 10:18

Lots of tears at bed time and this morning before school. Just been back to the vets to confirm the cremation. Feel weird and numb and achey inside.

Thank you all for your kind words, advice and support yesterday, and much love to all you cat lovers who have lost a dear family member.

floraeasy · 31/03/2017 10:22

Your poor DS. The first death of a pet is always tough. You've taught your DS how to love another little creature and of course pain is the other side of the coin when they are taken from us.

If you could plan something nice for the weekend, it might help.

Your cat was lucky to have had the chance to live in such a loving home. He wouldn't want you to be so sad, but I know it will take time to grieve.

I'm so sorry OP. He looked utterly gorgeous, I love the look on his face in the first photo.

Can I suggest cat proofing your garden if your other cat likes the outdoors but your road is unsafe? Would be awful to lose your other cat in the same circumstances.

TheSmallPrint · 31/03/2017 15:57

Thank you flora and MsMims.

Our garden is huge and surrounded by hedges and bushes, I think any attempt at cat proofing would be futile tbh. Also lots of foxes and badgers here who just put holes in everything anyway.

We have decided to keep brother locked in the house during morning school rush time as the road is manic. They always scoot out then and then come back to sleep all day and then doesn't go out til late at night when the road is quiet.

TheSmallPrint · 31/03/2017 15:58

Sorry I mean that's when the road is manic.

EffinElle · 31/03/2017 16:08

Big (((hugs))) to you all Flowers
One of my girls looked identical to your boy, she was lost on the road too Sad

pinkhousesarebest · 31/03/2017 16:18

I feel sick reading this as I know it is only a matter of time for us too. I know what a huge place a cat has in a family. My dh's first question every evening is where is the cat. So sorry.

Threetoedsloth · 31/03/2017 18:48

RIP beautiful, beautiful boy. We love them so.

Cowardlycustard2 · 31/03/2017 18:59

I am so sorry about your lovely boy, I lost my gorgeous 2 year old boy in the same way last year, his sister went into such a decline after he died and stopped eating, spent months looking for him, I still think about him and miss him every day. He was a massive ginger tom and we have planted some yellow and orange roses with his ashes which has helped a little to have a nice spot to remember him in. Also as another poster said to take comfort in the fact that he had such a happy life with you. In the case of my boy the person that hit him left him in the road but someone else actually took him to the nearest vet where they scanned him and then called me, I was grateful that there was someone decent enough to do that so we could say a proper goodbye to our boy. Sending you big hugs x

Nancy91 · 31/03/2017 19:03

What a beautiful cat, look at those striking eyes!

I'm so sorry for your loss, how horrible. Flowers

Cowardlycustard2 · 31/03/2017 19:42

I think it's awful that legally people that kill cats on the roads aren't required to stop and report it. These cats are beloved family members.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 01/04/2017 19:16

I'm very, very sorry to hear your news - we're never ready to let them go, even when we can see it coming, so to have such a beauty snatched away is just dreadful

At least he clearly didn't suffer, though, and went straight from a wonderful life with you to nothing. Fly free, gorgeous boy Flowers

TheSmallPrint · 01/04/2017 20:57

It is disgraceful Cowardly . Sad

DS got a lovely photo of him printed today and bought a special frame for it, its a lovely pic. Apparently we won't get his ashes for up to three weeks so a while to wait until we can have his little 'ceremony'.

I've been overwhelmed by the kindness from you all and by the sorrow of everyone who has also lost their much loved pets. Flowers

giggly · 02/04/2017 01:04

Flowers so sorry for your loss. Our 8 month kitten was hit and killed on Monday night, he was a grey as well. At least he was handed into the vets so we at least new what had happened to him as he only ever went out for around 30 minutes before checking in at home.
His brother is a wee lost soul. My dd is devastated. Big hugs to us all.

cozietoesie · 02/04/2017 01:41

I'm very sorry, Small.
