I need a hand hold - missing cat

I'm in bits today. An absolute emotional mess.

My indoor cat accidentally escaped on Sunday morning and although he has escaped before, we usually see him and easily coax him back in. This time we were dealing with an emergency with my DD and with all the focus on her we didn't realise that the cat had escaped until about half an hour after he had nipped out. To make matters worse it all happened at 4am and he has never escaped in darkness before.

I've been searching ever since and done all f the million things that need to be done in this situation. Now I'm starting to lose hope as it's been three days now.

I need positive stories of indoor cats returning unharmed. I'm really interested to know how they reappeared. Is it usually a call from a kind person who has found the cat or do they just arrive home unannounced? If so , how do they get back in or let you know they are home?

Oh, they are beautiful!

Yeah, I bet she'll punish him for a few days for being an inconsiderate bigger and leaving her. How dare he.

Are you giving him lots of fusses and cuddles today?

Reow · 09/03/2017 08:43

bugger

Bloody phone.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/03/2017 09:23

My son is who is sick at the moment is cuddled up in bed with him. They have a special bond. It's lovely to see them together again. Genie was getting used to being top cat while Ziggy was away. She looks very grumpy this morning.

Just seen this thread and delighted there is a happy ending! What a beautiful boy and great name - we've got a Ziggy too! He's currently snoozing in a little sunny spot on the sofa

Reow · 09/03/2017 09:29

Aw i'm so pleased for you.

I bet she'll be loving him again in a few days.

When my boy came home I was of course overjoyed and thankful, but I was also pretty pissed off with him for putting me through it all!

We've now bought a tabcat tracker for his collar so we can track him down if he goes missing again.

Trustyourself2 · 09/03/2017 09:58

I didn't know he was back!! I missed that! So happy for you all, especially Genie. What a relief. The pain of loss is the worst thing.

Tell him he's a very naughty boy, ha!

MargaretCabbage · 09/03/2017 10:01

So pleased for you! He's very handsome.

phoebe2016 · 09/03/2017 10:06

Thanks Reow, we are talking many years ago now. I still feel sad about it though. The never knowing what happened to him. I think he was stolen tbh. He was a huge black and white cat (like Felix) with a long goatee under her chin. He would always greet me on the drive, when I arrived home from work. He disappeared without a trace :( I have 2 other cats now, a brother and sister who i have had for 4 years, i adore them.

Reow · 09/03/2017 10:19

Aw that's very sad phoebe. I bet it was hard to let go.

Cats are our family. It makes me furious that people steal them.

Apparently there was a rise in thefts of ginger cats of the release of Bob the Streetcat! Did you read about that? Could be nonsense, but that worried me when my Tommy was missing.

CoolCarrie · 09/03/2017 10:26

Lovely to read he is back ! Get the champers out tonight

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/03/2017 10:40

Phoebe it's hard to move on when you don't know what happened to them. My mum's cat never came back and she still gets upset about it four years later.

Fizz I've had so many people telling me about their own Ziggy! Didn't realise it was such a popular cat name. He is actually Ziggy Stardust and Genie is really Jean Genie. Huge Bowie fans we are!

Toddlerteaplease · 09/03/2017 13:47

Yippee so glad he's back. Such a beautiful boy.

CoolCarrie · 09/03/2017 16:30

We have Major Tom, he is a beautiful white and ginger cat with the most lovely white & ginger tail. He is the least bother of anyone in our house, including me!

Wolfiefan · 09/03/2017 16:32

A blue Burmese? I grew up with two. Gorgeous trouble!
So pleased to hear the happy ending.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 09/03/2017 19:01

Major Tom! What a great name for a cat. May have to steal that if we get another cat.

I've been walking on air today. Can't stop smiling. The only problem is that Genie is still treating Ziggy like an imposter. She's hissing and puffing up everything he goes near her. The night before he went missing they were cuddled up together like they always are. How can she not know it's him after just four days?

OP posts:
Dreamanddream · 09/03/2017 19:49

He won't smell right anymore.

Get a cloth rub it over her, rub it over him, rub it over the beds and back over him again. He needs to get the smell of 'home' back.

phoebe2016 · 10/03/2017 06:24

Hi Reow, God, No! I never heard about that! I can't understand what goes through some peoples heads! I also have a Ginge and he is lovely, very quirky, he is called Steve.

StumblyMonkey · 10/03/2017 06:45

Agree with Dream....he smells strange and it's making her very unsure.

Imagine if DH left for four days unexpectedly and came home dressed in fancy dress or women's clothes. You'd be hissing too Grin

You just need to make him smell 'normal' again, wipe a cloth all over her and then all over him and vice versa a few times and it will help. Might take a couple of days to truly settle in.

Your two look very like two of mine (Luke Skywhiskers and Leia Skywhiskers)..

AngelsWithSilverWings · 10/03/2017 08:08

Oh Stumbly they are gorgeous!I've never seen a Burmese that colour -stunning! And the one at the front has Ziggy's face!

This is Master Stardust this morning having slept wedged under my chin all night.

OP posts:
phoebe2016 · 10/03/2017 08:37

Awww Angels, he is gorgeous. Looks very snug indeed! Lol

Trustyourself2 · 10/03/2017 09:41

I'd say he felt the loss of his family very deeply while he was "away" and is demonstrating that to you now. They're little monsters, aren't they!

Reow · 11/03/2017 15:10

Aw Phoebe he looks very chilled and snuggly! I'd never had a ginger tom until this one, he's quite feisty and likes a good play fight, but he's cuddly and nice too.

Angels maybe he came across a lady cat out there and came home smelling of her or something. Or of other animals. I wonder if she's teachin him a lesson Grin

We were away overnight last night and our boy is in a strop with us. It's fine for him apparently, but not for us!
