Is my cat in love with a snow leopard or just lonely?

So our 17 year old cat never ever reacts to the TV. You could show her Dreamies/ Felix/ Sheba adverts all day and she'd never blink. This is her form for her entire life.

Until last week we watched Planet Earth II and when the snow leopard came on she was entranced, went and sat 2 inches from the TV for the entire segment, pawed the screen, went round the back to see if it was there. You could practically see the cartoon hearts emanating from her.

We thought it was hilarious - until we wondered if this is the first evidence we have of her being lonely? Her mother died in May this year and so our cat is on her own for the first time. She is quite clingy with me now but we thought this was old age / because I am most generous with the cat treats. Does anyone know how we could work out if she's lonely? I'd consider having another rescue cat but ours is fiercely territorial and the only time I saw ours with a strange cat (in the garden) the claws came out..... I wish we could just ask her!

One of mine loves the Yorkshire vet. Much to the disapproval of the rescue they came from as they know that practice and think they are rubbish!

cozietoesie · 01/12/2016 17:35

It doesn't sound as if she's lonely - more just 'intrigued'. Smile (Warning: my own boy hates other cats so I may have some psychic scars there. Grin)

Husband had a cat that loved Snooker and One Man and his Dog, nothing else, just those 2 Smile

Smile OK we'll go with intrigued then, I felt bad about laughing at her (it was good).

Grief cat has just finished a box set binge of GoT with my DH.

HuckleberryGin · 01/12/2016 21:16

One of ours loved Meerkat Manor. And she was also intrigued by the snow leopard.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/12/2016 21:18

LittleCat is obsessed with planet earth. It's the only program he sits and watches two inches from the screen.

Should we be worried?

My little one loved baby animals, sat glued to the TV.

But she hates Dec on I'm a celebrity...

She sits on the TV unit and when he comes on she bashes his head with her paw :)

PenguinsandPebbles · 01/12/2016 21:23

thecakes is that a little British shorthair Grin

I have three of them

Weedsnseeds1 · 01/12/2016 21:30

Old cat loved snooker and searched behind the TV when a ball went down a pocket. Current one not so bothered but was fascinated by a programme about kittens a few months ago.

TheCakes · 01/12/2016 22:02

Who, the cat or the PM Penguin?

Yes, Ozzy's a little BSH. Lovely breed, aren't they? He's a super softie.

Aww, my oldest cat's favourite film is That Darn Cat (1965), it is a sweet Disney film and I love it too but sometimes I put it on for her as she loves it :D its about a cat that works with the FBI to solve a kidnapping, I'm sure she fancies herself an FBI agent. She is also obsessed with dung beetles for some reason, if she sees one on tv she goes mad! I always record it if I see one on tv to show her :D

Cats do grieve for the ones they've lost. I understand about her being territorial, but if you got a kitten it would be unusual for them not to adapt after a few days. They are more likely to accept a young cat, and one of opposite gender would be easiest. My cat was 13 when we got two kittens for her after her companion passed away suddenly. She was grumpy for a while and didn't like them, but after a few months she was fine with them. After a year she was glad of their company. Eventually she let them cuddle her and wash her fur! She passed away last year aged 19.

I'm sure having them kept her alive longer as they provided stimulation (she watched them run about) and kept her warm in the winter (cuddled her). Cats aren't meant to be on their own and enjoy the company of other cats. They might not be best of friends but they do enjoy having someone else around when you go out. Getting 2 kittens was ideal for us as they played with each other and didn't annoy her too much, but were there for cuddles if she allowed them. She ruled the roost!

When I was younger we had a lovely cat and my parents didn't get another one when his Mum passed away. My Mum always said that was the one thing she always regretted as he was so lonely when we went out or away.

If you do get another cat, I would keep them in one room together for a few days (supervised) and sleep in there with them at night. I did this when I got a kitten last year and my other 2 hated it for about 2 days (wouldn't eat, hiding etc.) but got over it quickly and accepted her.

Sorry for the essay! I wish you all the best!

At least CakesCat wasn't transfixed by the Trump.. although that would be completely understandable with his strange road-kill hair "do".

Ozzy was probably flummoxed why May's slogan didn't say, "A country that works for every CAT."

IAmNotACat · 04/12/2016 01:31

Aww.

I'd consider getting her a kitten. She might not be lonely as such, but if she's never been an only cat she might be missing the company of another cat.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 04/12/2016 01:32

Did you know that there are some special cat programmes on Netflix? Totally not kidding, they have cartoon mice running round mazes etc. GlassesCat was underwhelmed. He quite liked the idea of pulling down a giraffe single-pawed on last week's Planet Earth ii

RubbishMantra · 04/12/2016 01:42

Ooh nooo, Hettie! She'd probably seen George Galloway wearing a lurex leotard, on all fours, pretending to be a cat when he was on celebrity Big Brother, purring and drinking from a saucer of milk.

She was probably trying to shield your eyes.

OlennasWimple · 04/12/2016 01:47

My elderly house cat, who was a heck of a hunter in his day, totally wanted to stalk the whales on Blue Planet Hmm

OlennasWimple · 04/12/2016 01:47

Oh, and I think you should get a kitten Grin

HemanOrSheRa · 04/12/2016 02:13

It's very strange, what catches a kitty's eye. All of my cats have completely ignored the TV unless there is rugby on or wildlife programmes showing ants Grin.

HemanOrSheRa · 04/12/2016 02:17

Here's Master Knuckles enjoying the rugger.

view our cat was exactly the same. Never normally bothered by the tv, couldn't get enough of the bob cat on Planet Earth II. Maybe it has something to do with the dulcet tones of David Attenborough?
