Does your cat bite?

Do any of your cats bite?

Ours does - I think she is just playing as she only seems to "hold on" rather than really sink her teeth in (unless you try and pull away!). She usually does it when you are stroking her calmly and quietly - she'll suddenly just go for it.

She is a keen (indoor) huntress now, as evidenced when playing with her so I wonder if the two are related? She is also a very independent madam, although mellowing a little now.

Despite owning and caring for numerous cats over the years, I've never had this before!

I have five cats, three sweet and docile, one a beast who no one goes near except me and one male cat who likes to discipline me if I move too much on the bed. My male never bites hard, more of a " Look here Missy, stop messing around with the bloody sheets!"

hollinhurst84 · 29/11/2016 15:26

I've woken up before and found I've been lay practically on top of the cat with a pillow thrown over him and he just carries on sleeping GrinGrin

We have 3 strays and our housecoat , she does but I know the signs now so she doesn't ! One of the strays bites dh all the time, he's very fluffy and HAS to be groomed a lot, he loves dh though and hasn't drawn blood.

I'll tell dh about the clicking it might work. Thanks pp.

Ours is very gentle and has never bitten me despite numerous tablets and me pricking her ear for blood glucose readings.
The vets always remark how good she is having blood taken. She gets wriggly but never bites or scratches.
Previous cat got bitey as he got older. For some reason he used to leap up the bed at DP and attack him.

Weedsnseeds1 · 29/11/2016 16:53

Mine doesn't bite, but has occasionally caught me accidentally with a claw while lying on his back, purring and doing "jazz paws" . He also straddles my arm, holds it down really firmly with his chest and washes my hand. I watched something that other night, where a male lion was doing this to a cub who tried to pinch his food. Apparently it's a form of discipline! I do NOT steal the cat's food, so not sure what I'm being disciplined for!

cozietoesie · 29/11/2016 16:59

On general principle, I guess? Grin

tabulahrasa · 29/11/2016 17:02

Mine bites after a certain number of strokes...but, it's not always the same number.

So it's stroke me, stroke me, then suddenly and randomly, nope - too many Hmm

ILikeyourHairyHands · 29/11/2016 17:10

I get my ankles and calves bitten by big cat whenever I go in the kitchen

He's a greedy git though.

oxcat1 · 29/11/2016 17:15

I was just coming on to ask a question about this! I've got two five-month old kittens and they are incredibly loving, and also incredibly playful. They follow me around like little dogs, and there is no way i can sit down without one or other pestering to be on my lap.

However, they also like play fighting. Usually it is with each other, but when I start stroking one cat in particular, she often switches to kill mode, and will start biting my wrist, and kicking with her back legs. When she was smaller she never used claws (good training from the CPL i think), but now she is starting to forget that. I have tried attempting to catch her back legs to hold them when she starts kicking me, but i just get scratched doing that, and similarly, attempting to pull my hand out of her mouth also provokes more fighting.

Have you any idea how to persuade a playful kitten not to use teeth and claws?!

Yawnyawnallday · 29/11/2016 17:27

Ours will clasp whatever in her teeth and then lick them into submission. We try to keep hands away but elbows often get treated to this. A kicker toy is great for syphoning off kitty aggression.

Floralnomad · 29/11/2016 17:32

My mums Ragdoll has bitten her on several occasions , he will just be sitting on the floor and sink his teeth in her leg as she walks past or be sitting on the arm of a chair and suddenly sink his teeth into her arm . There is no warning and it's definitely not done in a friendly way , he's never bitten anybody else though which is a bit odd .

susurration · 29/11/2016 17:53

If the sharp no works you don't need to necessarily introduce the clicking. Suscat just doesn't take the word no seriously. She thinks we mean, pause and then do it anyway!

Yawnyawnallday · 29/11/2016 18:11

Watch Jackson Galaxy on YouTube.

Fluffycloudland77 · 29/11/2016 19:24

Yes but it's over excitement with ours. Or boredom.

ppeatfruit · 30/11/2016 10:18

*oxcat8 You're trying to fight nature Grin

We managed to train our house cat to stop jumping on tables, but she was one year old. It was by saying NO firmly and putting her on the floor and then giving encouraging praise (in a high 'baby' voiced way repeating "good girl" a LOT) It sounds weird but it works!

JessicaEccles · 30/11/2016 14:13

Omar will give me a little nip if I am not quick enough getting out of bed, or quick enough to get ham out of the fridge for him.

Boo will attack after several minutes fussing.

TheCakes · 30/11/2016 17:19

Mine has been SAVAGE today. I think he's going through puberty.

foamybananasweets · 30/11/2016 17:35

Mine bites my DM on her big toe to get her attention whevever DM visits. She is a very gentle cat and I didn't believe DM when she told me! Now I've seen it I'm afraid i GrinGrin Grin its DMs fault for not showering attention on her like we do

My old cat used to do the love bite thing when I stroked her. She would clamp her teeth into the bit between my thumb and finger, and purr her head off. It was really strange. She only did it to me, and she used to look really offended when i made her let go! I took it as a strange sign of love and used to put up with it.

ppeatfruit · 01/12/2016 09:08

I wonder if it's like kittens feeding (how they clamp their mum's nipple maybe?) Thing is they have tiny little softish teeth then; they obviously forget that they have adult teeth later !

RamblinRosie · 06/12/2016 01:41

After 15 cats, no biters, I've now got two, Muffin is an occasional biter, when he wants attention. Sid is a big bugger, he just marches up and bites ankles when he comes in , here I am , fuss me.

ppeatfruit · 06/12/2016 09:22

Blimey an ankle biter Xmas Grin Ramblin I 've never heard of that Xmas Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 06/12/2016 09:28

Ramblin- I saw a cat like that on My Cat from Hell, they resolved it by playing loads with the cat so it pounced and got worn out and too shattered to bother biting anyoneGrin

TheCakes · 07/12/2016 11:23

This morning Ozzy has been launching himself at me, arms and legs outsplayed. My tights are ragged. He needed a good play but I had to get ready for work. Very unreasonable of me.

xStefx · 07/12/2016 11:33

I have to throw a soft pillow at my cat when she sits on the stairs to make her move if I want to get past or my ankles will have it :-( she is lovely though honest

QODRestYeMerryGentlemen · 07/12/2016 17:08

My 8 yr old is savage. Starts as a gentle nibble then he'll clamp down with his back teeth and OUCH

He also enjoys a set amount of strokes. Just randomly selects how many he likes!
