I'm on the fence about whether to start this, having just seen a thread where a woman has been slated for knowing a dog who is having puppies and it wasn't even her dog.

My cat is due to have kittens any day. I'm not an experienced cat owner and haven't cared for a cat going through this experience. I'll say at the outset that this is a completely undesirable situation and it won't be repeated.

We've talked to the vet and read what we can about what to do, but thought it would also be helpful to start a thread in case further questions come up. If you have some experience and are happy to share it, I can't thank you enough.

If you wish to chastise me for getting into this situation in the first place, please don't bother as it will achieve nothing for the cat or anyone else at this point. I will simply hide the thread and not return to it (unless, of course, there is specific need for urgent information relating to the cat's welfare and it's impossible to get it anywhere else).

The cat is a Maine Coon and only ten months old. The vet wouldn't neuter her over the summer because she was being treated with antibiotics for a long-running gut infection that lasted months (now recovered). She came into heat at the tail end of that illness and unfortunately managed to escape my clutches (that is, the place where she was being confined) for long enough to mate. It shouldn't have happened and was an unfortunate one-off resulting from a unique set of circumstances that I won't go into here. She's a sweet natured, beautiful animal and we're upset that she is carrying a litter and at such a young age.

She didn't have the 'pinking up' symptom so we didn't know she was pregnant until the vet confirmed it two weeks ago. Apparently there are at least five kittens there. He estimated that she would give birth anytime from Monday to Friday of this week. (So she is a day late).

Don't urge me to spay her at the first opportunity because that is exactly what I am planning to do. In the past we have rehabilitated rescue dogs and never imagined we would end up contributing to the problem of overpopulation - very humbling experience and the priority now to is to get this right for the cat.

Thanks very, very much to anyone who has constructive advice.

The kitten in that first picture 😂

They're gorgeous OP. Have you started looking for new homes for them once they're big enough?

He was so unimpressed to be sat in a mug!

I haven't started looking for homes, simply because people will ask when they'll be ready and I've no idea. As we're too late for Christmas and I have reservations about giving children kittens for Christmas anyway, I thought I'd advertise them in the new year.

Little one's sore eye is so much better.

Thanks everyone. No offence taken shriek!

At 270 grams, our biggest little guy is now three times his birth weight. The others are 20-50 grams behind him and all seem settled.

I thought I'd just see if any facebook friends were interested in them (didn't count as advertising in my mind because I didn't expect much interest!). By the end of the afternoon we had three definites and three maybes. All lovely people and no one wanting a 'Christmas kitten'. I have said they won't be available for another eleven weeks as that seems to be the current recommendation.

Definitely not drivable from London sadly!

Sorry for late reply Slender. A warm, damp flannel wiped across the nethers after the feeds will be beneficial to the kits. They need the stimulation to make them pee and poo. Try to mimic the way MumCat would lick them. She would do this after a feed, but because there are so many, and mum's so young, some help might be needed.

You're doing very well, and the kittens are adorable. Sorry if I missed it, but what did the vet say about the little one with the poorly eye?

Thanks rubbish. Eye is healing well. Another kitten also developed the infection but we seem to have caught it early enough.

Another uneventful day with kittens feeding well and sleeping well. Mislaid a kitten at one stage when mum decided to move them all and got distracted - DD triumphantly discovered it wedged into a tiny gap between a piece of furniture and the wall.

Vet follow-up appointment is now tomorrow morning, when we will hopefully find out genders ahead of friends coming to choose their kitten.

Afraid not. I mean, you're pretty safe with torties (female) but anything else of that age, you really have to upend them to make sure. Wink

I'm leaving that to the vet. Having nightmares about double booking a kitten as it is. Misrepresenting the gender is a whole other disaster!

They are adorable!
We got Vinocat from Cats Protection age 6, she arrived there as Mr Vinocat (from family who had her mum and took her in after previous owner died) was whisked to vets for check etc and was declared female. The CP woman said she was very embarrassed as she hadn't had the chance to check.
I used to work with someone who had a male cat called Maisy....

Seven very healthy little kittens now, all getting cuter every day.

You were right about the genders cozie! We have two black and white males, two females tabbies, one male tabby, one black female and one female grey tabby who may never leave because my DD adores her and I haven't the heart to make her available yet.

Three facebook friends swooped down yesterday to reserve all the females. We're left with one male tabby who is so beautiful he won't be waiting long, and the two black and white males who are also very sweet.

Dad is a huge black and white bandit of a tom who has been looking in our windows and yowling. Mum is still very thin but the vet found her slightly heavier than before.
