Hypoallergenic cat?

ApollO88 · 30/07/2016 10:06

Does such a thing exist? My DH is allergic to to cats and we're not allowed a dog. There is a furry shaped hole in our family. Can the ladies who are owned by cats offer any insight??

oneflew DH is only mildly allergic - is it really awful for your DH, or just a bit of a pain? How bad on the annoying scale?

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/07/2016 16:46

Breed rescue. Always loads of adult cats about who need a home.

hardheadedwoman · 30/07/2016 16:49

We've got siberiabs too, they are supposed to be good for allergies?

SplodgeBear1988 · 30/07/2016 16:53

Balanease ?Sp are a Anti allergy breed I believe.

SplodgeBear1988 · 30/07/2016 17:01

Oh and my OH was allergic to cats with sneezing and he has become immune to our 2 cats yes 2 we got one and the 2 years later I manged to persuade him to allow me to have another one.

RosieCockle · 30/07/2016 17:05

My colleague has a Siberian precisely because her DH is allergic to cats. Doesn't have any problems with this one.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 30/07/2016 17:06

Petalcleanse is worth investigating too,got great reviews.

Quodlibet · 30/07/2016 21:25

My moggy has fur like this - not really fluffy, quite similar to Siberian or Norwegian Forest Cats who are also meant to be hypoallergenic.
She wasn't £££ - she turned up at the back door and we let her stay because she didn't set my allergies off! So do bear in mind that you might not need an expensive pedigree cat, just one with the right type of fur.
I disagree with pp - Bengals aggravate my allergies horrendously.
Petal cleanse is really good.

Your cat is gorgeous Quo.

Another vote for Siberians here, DH is allergic but we have three and only reaction is if we've been away for a few days then he gets a bit itchy eyed for a couple of hours

WeirdAndPissedOff · 31/07/2016 09:28

I can imagine you could find one for less than £850 somewhere?
If not rescues will sometimes have pedigrees in - usually great cats but had owners who weren't prepared for their behaviour traits.

On that note, whichever breed you get make sure you an allergy test, and also look into the breed's requirements and behaviour, as they're different to "normal" moggies.

RubbishMantra · 31/07/2016 11:25

No cats are hypoallergenic. But a decent breeder or rescue will let you hang out with the cat for a while, to check for allergic reactions.

I've got a Devon Rex, which are less likely to trigger allergies. Not the reason I adopted him though, it was because they're very friendly and born entertainers.

Here's a picture of my curly little fool.

Curly fur!! Oooh he's beautiful! I've never come across a curly haired cat before! We've always been a dog family growing up but I must admit my research into the pedigree world of cats has been an interesting education so far!

I have a Devon Rex too. He is quite a character!

I wouldn't say any cat will be hypoallergenic - as the allergen is in the saliva, but the great thing about Devons is that they don't drop hair all over the house because of the curl. So there is less hair around which has salvia on it to be allergic to.

They are high energy cats though - need a lot of stimulation and not to be left on own all the time.

Here is my baby!

Your's is gorgeous, Overthinker, beautiful colour - brown smoke or grey smoke?

You're not wrong about them being somewhat hyperactive.

Mine got given the wrong tail when tails were given out. more suited to a Persian.

Overthinker2016 · 31/07/2016 12:34

He is just a "blue" ie grey.
What's yours?

Great cats! Has got me through all sorts of trying times.

I did have another one at one point - a black one, who had the sweetest temperament, but he died.

tabulahrasa · 31/07/2016 12:45

My Siamese didn't set off the three people I know with cat allergies symptoms...

They're also great if you like dogs as they're more dog like than a lot of cats, very people orientated and less independent than other cats.

RubbishMantra · 31/07/2016 12:49

Mine's a chocolate and white colourpoint (Si-rex) with blue eyes. It's hard to tell with Devons, because they come in literally every colour.

Your's looks a lot smarter than mine, who has shaggy hair in some places, massive frills behind the ears and mutton-chop Victorian train conductor sideburns, and just peach fuzz in others. Which means when he walks, his little pink old man's tummy swings from side to side - he's only 2.

Sorry for the loss of your black boy.

RubbishMantra · 31/07/2016 13:07

Tabula, my DSis' nickname for my Devon is "Dogcat". I think they're quite similar to Siamese, as when the breed was discovered in the 1950s, they were quite heavily out-crossed with them.

When he's asleep, he's in a "kitty coma", but when he's awake, very demanding of attention and games. He brings me rose prunings, left by my bed. Smile

reallyanotherone · 31/07/2016 13:16

I've always had siamese and they've been fine for allergic friends.

Siamese turn up in rescues quite often- they are very high maintenance and people often can't cope. If you like being followed round, constantly talked to and sat on the minute you stop moving, go for it :)

Google siamese rescue, there are several breed rescues out there. Good idea to pop down for a trial cuddle too.

RubbishMantra · 31/07/2016 13:31

Little M's favourite sleeping position.

They have very few guard hairs so don't shed much, and when they reach the 13 week stage, they're practically bald, but it grows in. When my little curly bloke came to me, he was just peach fuzz, but with a mohican that ran along his spine. I had to get him a little jumper, for chilly nights.

Mine had a Mohican too!

Cute pic!

My Devon is coming at end of month... Just saying!
