There was a lovely cartoon I saw years ago to this effect. The caption was something along the lines of:

"The human's stocked up on my favourite food. Dammit! That means I can never eat it again!"

Absolutely. This inferior food may well come back into favour once it has either a) been donated elsewhere or b) has gone out of date.

Ah. Would it work if I tried to fool them by looking at pack and exclaiming "Oh no! This food has gone past it's recommended best before date! I must throw it away at once!" and see if they come running then? Or does it actually have to have expired, and they need to wittness me actually physically throw the food away?'

Can you pretend it isn't theirs, and that they're not allowed it? That sometimes works.

You need to put it on a plate for you to eat and then leave it by your side for a brief moment and tell the cat very firmly not to touch it, then they'll eat it

Yep. Also any treats have to be stolen straight off your dinner plate. Put it in cat bowl and it's rubbish apparently

Both still refusing their food and giving me "Why hast thou forsaken me?" looks? Even tried warming it up for them...I'm going to have to cave in and buy a different brand aren't I?

I have four, four! different brands on the go at any time, all fish flavoured as nothing else is ever acceptable. On any given day, any number between one and four will be unacceptable.

It's even worse if it's prescription food. Thankfully my cat no longer requires that, so we're back to ignoring the normal food and eating plastic bags (because plastic is super nutritious)
