Can anyone find me a rescue cat please? Greater Manc/Lancs

Some of you have been so helpful in talking me down from spunking 500 quid on a fancy cat, and I think I've got that particular potential folly out my system. For now.

But I still can't find a suitable moggie that can cope with our kids and energetic young cat!

I found a ginger kitten near me on gumtree for £0, but the advertiser is not replying

There's lots of other kittens on gumtree but I'm really not keen on encouraging people to let their moggies get pregnant for cash. Some of the adverts give me the rage

I had a long interview chat with the local cat rescue lady - nothing, nada, nowt.

So, free to good home type thing, or a small amount. Not £145 for an ordinary mog!

Our criteria:

• needs to be able to cope with being pounced on by our playful and energetic 1 yr old car
• can live with 3 kids (youngest is 3 and lots of rescues won't rehome kittens if there's kids under 5)

Please help me, I'm going cross eyed from looking!

Have you tried bleakholt animal sanctuary? We've had cats and dogs from there before. No idea what they charge these days though.

Yes they won't rehome kittens to homes with children under 5, and have no other suitable cats (when I rang last week).

That's a daft rule (imo). Guessing rspca is the same? Have you got Facebook? Sometimes kittens come up on the selling sites, they do round here (which actually probably isn't far from you if you've tried bleakholt).

I'm looking on gum tree, but I'm not willing to pay more than 50 quid for a mog. Some of those ads are bloody cheeky!

I noticed our local Cats Protection had replied to someone on tgeir Facebook page asking if they had any restrictions in placing cats with babies and they said no as long as the whole household met a potential cat.
I am nowhere near Manchester but have you tried Cats Protection?
There's a site called Catchat which lists rescues in your area?

Could you ring the vets you use and let them know? You never know.

We got a cat last Sept and when I spoke to the CPL they were really snotty on the phone because we have young children, we both work outside the home and so on.

Well yes, we do work outside the home that's why we want a cat not a dog! Plus we know how to care for cats, I've always had cats, dh works from home a couple of days a week and we have a nanny so there is generally someone around. But the CPL didn't listen to any of that.

We went to a local RSPCA shelter with children in tow, they chatted to us, introduced us to some cats they felt would suit our family well and we played with them and took one straight home! Was great. For some of the cats who had more issues they would have needed a home check and a bit more time but we took a lovely 5 month old. Around 5/6 months is a great age with small children as they are still kittenish and playful but they can retract their claws and are a bit more resilient and not afraid of their own shadows! Ours is fab, if one of the older ones annoys him he will swipe at him but the smallest one (just turned 4) can get away with murder, the cat lets him carry him around the house and give him bit squishy hugs :)

Must depend on the local branch, but we have just rehomed from CPL, and have small children. As a PP says, they were happy as long as the whole family met the cats and they could see how the DC reacted (and the cat reacted to them). Worth going in person to a shelter if possible, I'd imagine.

They also told me that kitten season is coming up (May/June) so would expect an influx then and the couple of months after...

Ringing the vets might be a good idea.

You could also try catchat. They have a Find a Shelter page which will give most of the shelters local to you, including the smaller ones. They also have Forums where people might be seeking homes for cats.

Do people really pay £135 for an un-neutered, un micro-chipped, un-vaccinated mog??

We have had cats from rspca in Stockport, heatons in Heaton chapel and dove cat sanctuary in dove holes. Last two should be fine with rehoming to children, best to call as they like you to look round. Think heatons have an open day every Saturday.

We recently rehomed our gorgeous girl from a CPL branch and have a 15 month old toddler. We were clear about our requirements and they were careful to only offer us cats that would happy living in that environment. A blanket rule seems such a shame.

Our local cats protection is full (we're trying to rehome ours and doing a home to home adoption as they have no space for them), I'm surprised there's none about further south, we're north lancs.

I've found a kitten at a sanctuary which is ready to go on Saturday.

I've also enquired about one on gum tree to see if they will accept an offer (I'm not paying 100 quid!)
