My cat has died tonight

I had a call from the vet about an hour ago. My lovely boy cat James was hit by a car.

I can't stop crying. I can't believe he won't come home again. I keep listening out for the cat flap. It hurts so much.

No, I didn't adopt another cat. I have twelve already, nine boys and three girls.

timtam23 · 21/03/2016 13:39

tippy I did not lose a cat to the road but I did take in a stray kitten when my 2 oldies were on their last legs (and one died just a few weeks later) - it helped me very much to have the kitten around as I missed my old girl cat dreadfully. I hadn't intended to replace her before she'd even died but with hindsight it did help. It's not always right for everyone but keep an open mind. Very sorry again for your loss Flowers

I am missing my boy so much.

Nothing can replace my James, but I cant imagine not having a kitty-cat in my life. I will have to look up locks rescues, when I've come to terms with things.

My grandkids cat dies last week he was a old cat he was a Burmese he was called max kids are heartbroken and my grandson said he's gone to the moon with his grandpa Jeff who died last year .

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 19:11

That's lovely, sprouts. I'm guessing that the grandkids had never known a world that didn't have max in it?

Friendlystories · 21/03/2016 19:19

You can never replace them Tippy but sometimes filling the hole they leave in your life helps make the pain more bearable. And of course it gives another rescue kitty a chance at the sort of lovely life your James had. I'm glad you're thinking about it Flowers

Roseberrry · 21/03/2016 19:23

So sorry Sad I've no experience but my old boy is getting ever older so don't think it'll be long before I'm in the same position.

I would give yourself time to grieve and come to terms with it before you get another. You've obviously given him such a lovely home, I'm sure he'll always be thankful.
In time you might feel like making a new furry friend x

tippytap · 21/03/2016 19:27

It feels worse because he was so young. I expected us all to grow old together

I know I'll get another. There is a cat-shaped hole in my family.

Xxx

I'm so sorry xxx

We lost our dear boy to poisoning a year ago and were completely devastated.

We made the desicion to get another cat almost immediately tbh, there was such a huge hole in the house...due to work etc, there was one week from then until Xmas where someone could be around day and night to settle a new cat in and that happened to be the next week after we lost him so we went for it (the thought of almost a year with that cat shaped hole was horrid)

We lost him on the Sunday and picked up our lovely girl on the Saturday. It was fast but it worked for us....she's been with us a year today (!) and she has helped that gaping hole from the loss of Caspar fill up a little X

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 22:55

I just know that I'll have another boy come to live with me as soon as the right one comes along - be that a month or a week or whatever. I don't think about it at all as a consequence.

Wolfiefan · 21/03/2016 23:03

We lost our old girl in July. We welcomed two new hooligans to the family in September! They aren't a replacement but they have certainly brought smiles back to our faces and lots of love and laughter.

tippytap · 22/03/2016 06:22

Thanks, all.

I really appreciate everyone posting on this thread. My family aren't 'cat people' and really don't understand.

My dd is 10 and was devastated about James. She misses him dreadfully, but had said she wants us to adopt another, so I think it's a matter of time and finding a cat that loves us and that we love too.

There is actually a rescue almost on my doorstep. I'm off work next week and might pop along for some cat-cuddles, and to see how I handle it.

I imagine you'll come home with someone. Or at least - depending on home checks etc - have someone reserved.

Good luck, anyway.

Fozzleyplum · 22/03/2016 23:53

We went to see some rescue kittens in foster care fairly soon after we lost one of our lovely boy cats.....and ended up adopting 2 further kittens.

BigcatLittlecat · 23/03/2016 00:02

I'm so sorry for your loss, they really get into your hearts.
We lost our old girl on the Monday, so sad and the first time I had seen my DH cry! Awful. He was adamant we were not going to get another! By the Wednesday he had spoken to the rescue centre we had got her from and by Friday evening we had crazy kitten in our life! Very quick but worked for us! Go visit that rescue centre! Smile

GinBunny · 23/03/2016 00:02

Oh Tippy, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our bunny at 7.30 this morning, it's so heartbreaking - these pets are part of our hearts and they leave a paw print hole when they leave us. But lots of people don't understand that - just ignore them.
Having a new pet does help, it sounds like the time could be right with the rescue nearby and your week off - there are sad cats there who needs new homes and lots of love, you have that in abundance Thanks

Friendlystories · 23/03/2016 00:06

We visited our local rescue centre yesterday and have adopted an 8/9 yo female. She's very loving and affectionate.

Tbh, it wasn't really planned. Jessie is lovely and I was so upset at the thought of no one wanting her due to her age. She's not and will never be, a replacement for James, I miss him so much. But it's very nice to have a cat home again. Have to say, I wonder if I'm completely barking in taking on a cat of her age.

Here's a pic.

She's a beautiful girl, she's not old!

tippytap · 27/03/2016 12:28

Ha, Fluffy, according to everyone I've spoken to she is! I should've gone for a kitten. What if she gets sick? What if she dies soon?

The rescue centre said her owner was heartbroken to give her up, but she was too ill to look after her. I really couldn't leave her there. My dd adores her and she spent all of yesterday on our laps. She deserves a proper home, and she will be well loved here.
