Weaning cat off Felix onto natures menu country hunter

Anyone with any advice my cat seems pretty much addicted to Felix. I've researched cat food and with help from threads on here have decided to use natures menu country hunter. They advise giving the cat 2 bowls one with the Felix and one with some country hunter and to take it slowly until he starts eating the country hunter. Anyone have any idea why they don't advise just mixing it in with the Felix and gradually increasing the amount? Should have asked them on the phone and now can't get through to them.

Also has anyone successfully got their cat off Felix onto a better quality food?

That is really good he ate it. I bulk bought some odd the waitrose pet website it was down to £3.79 for 6 pouches £1 cheaper than pets at home 😀

Odd should have been from not sure how that happened 🙈

We feed our cat Nature's Menu pouches, but not the Country Hunter ones, the regular ones (they're a bit cheaper and still have 70% meat). Boy cat is a bit fussy and only likes the beef (not the turkey or fish). Girl cat was less fussy but she's on a prescription diet atm - which ironically is much lower quality with less meat. I will put her back on Nature's Menu when she's off her diet.

We also give them Orijen dry food which is excellent quality, about 80% meat I think, and they love it.

I bought some of the ordinary ones as well but haven't tried him on them yet. (We still have the second half of the original to go.)

cozietoesie · 18/03/2016 00:06

Mashed it up a short time ago and put it down at his feeding station. Smile

It's an interesting colour. Sort of dark pink - which looks a little odd these days because nearly all cat food now seems to be brown-ish. (Added colour for the benefit of owners I guess?)

cozietoesie · 18/03/2016 07:40

He ate about a third to a half of what was there. (Likewise the Felix.)

I'm not too despondent. He's a very self-regulating cat and you can't really expect to throw a whole extra meal into the mix with no impact on his eating whatsoever.

We'll see.

He ate the rest of it for his breakfast - went to that bowl first and in preference to some Felix which was next to it.

Cozie that is excellent and I know what you mean about the colour really does make you wonder what's in other brands.
I'm not sure if I said but I add a bit of water to the natures menu as without it my cats poos were more like wee pebbles (tmi sorry) and I worried he would get constipated. Just something to keep an eye on.

Thanks for the tip. He's prone to constipation anyway - circumstances - so I'll keep an eye on it. I'm just a little reluctant to 'dilute' that good smell right now (it being so important to him) but I'll bear it in mind if/when he becomes stabilised on the food.

He ate slightly more of the Country Hunter during the night/at breakfast than he did of the Felix so it's definitely proving tasty to him.

I may even buy some more. Grin

That is excellent better have your credit card handy 😀

My cc is hiding - like a 4 year old who thinks if they can't see you, you can't see them. Grin

I've told it to get a grip so it's fallen out with me. Wink

hollinhurst84 · 20/03/2016 03:18

I went to pets at home to get some and ended up with the original natures menu stuff which he is eating well - when I say well this is a cat who considers a pouch a day a "hungry" day
Pets at home have a pouch box called purely holistic, might be worth a try for anyone who struggles with cats eating as there's a money back guarantee on it if they don't like it. Decent ingredients too

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/03/2016 08:59

I remember when it was a choice of whiskas, kit e Kat & gourmet.

cozietoesie · 20/03/2016 09:01

I'm at the crunch point when I need to buy some more, including boxes of different flavours. This is traditionally when Seniorboy decides he doesn't like something after all, leaving me and the cc stranded. (And to the great joy of next door's cat.)

Fluffycloudland77 · 20/03/2016 09:08

Next door must LOVE you

cozietoesie · 20/03/2016 09:10

Next door or the food bank. It won't go to waste, either way, even if Seniorboy decides it's unacceptable.

NameChange30 · 20/03/2016 10:54

We have a really good pet shop nearby that sells Natures Menu (original and Country Hunter) in individual pouches. We bought one of each flavour so we could test them out. Is there a pet shop near you that does the same?

cozietoesie · 20/03/2016 11:01

There's a 'sort of' pet store near the vets so I'll likely pop in there tomorrow. (I have to go to the vet's tomorrow anyway. )

Daftaboutthecat · 20/03/2016 21:39

It would be great if they would do samples but they don't. Applaws do though sent us a lovely sample of the pate and some dry food my cat loved both Blush

Mine loved applaws then went off it Confused

I've spent ages trying to change the diet of my two miscreants. They love Carnilove and James Wellbeloved (grain free) dried food. That and a bit of the evil Felix seems to be working. (Shan't give details of what "not working" entailed!)

Daftaboutthecat · 21/03/2016 22:08

Hope you got on ok at the vets today cozie and managed to get some pouches when out too.
I've been noticing the difference in my cats coat it is so silky and glossy and he is not shedding as much not sure if this has to do with the food or that I quickly run over him with the Furminator every other day but hardly any fur is coming away compared to when I first started brushing him with it.

cozietoesie · 21/03/2016 22:35

Sadly, the pet store was closed - 14.30 on a Monday afternoon so I'm assuming 'circumstances' - and I've had to order online, in the meantime, I think he was becoming bored with the same flavour (his Felix pouches are rotated) so tonight, his supper spread includes some of the ordinary Nature's Menu. Still a decent food and one that he's currently tucking into. Smile

Daftaboutthecat · 22/03/2016 07:08

That's a shame cozie. It really is a pity they don't do mixed packs. Have to say we have all the flavours rotated and mine is always desperate for his food he has been purring, patting and pouncing on me from 6am this morning trying to give me the hint that he is ready for breakfast. Hmm
