Do cats ever drink the water you put down for them?

My kitten never seems to drink her water, but is obsessed by water. Tries to catch it from the tap. Sits in the sink ages.

SparklyCat would only drink from a running tap, so I bought one of these beauties!
Apparently the movement of running water pumps oxygen through it, which makes it more appealing to drink to an animal

BoyKitten (who discovered what his nuts were for yesterday, and drove us all mad trying to hump GirlKitten) is a little furry asshat who keeps tap dancing in his water bowl. I have filled it up three times in the four hours he's been home from the vet (because he couldn't wait until the appointment next week, could he).

But I can't be too angry with him, he's got a little shaved bit on his arm, and no balls any more.

Thank you all for adding to the thread. I have been away and have left the baby on her own for the first time with a kind neighbour watching over. Here is her favourite place.

I've seen my cat drinking from his water bowl once so I'm sure he does drink occasionally when we aren't looking.

Ernie is 16 weeks and has always drunk water form his bowl since we got him. He was on Whiskas dry kitten food (not sure if dry food makes them more thirsty). He has a mixture of food now but still loves his water. I've put him down a saucer in the bedroom which he loves.

He is really fascinated by water and the showere but hates getting his feet wet...still doesn't stop him getting in there. He also used to lick the mat where I got it wet after a shower...he has realised this week that my feet get wet as well and licks them.

My other cats rarely drank water that was fresh

Our cat George (who went missing 6 weeks ago, sniff :( ) was obsessed with water and taps but wouldn't drink. He was then (unconnected) an extremely poorly kitten but made it and even after that we struggled to get liquid in him - we were concerned as when he was ill he was also severely hydrated.

I must have tried every single dish under the sun, plastic, pot glass, metal you name it.

Then we used a very flat (free felix porcelain dish) with water form the filter jug and placed it on the windowsill in the kitchen - ta dah, it worked!

Our other cat seems to drink fine with it next to his food.

Mine
Never drinks from their water bowls. One likes running taps and one likes toilets.

Mine won't drink from any bowl I put out for them no matter where I put it, but drink from the dog's bowls...I've just given up trying to let then have their own water.

Lancelottie · 03/12/2015 08:30

Sorry to hear about George, Maxy. Has he always been a wanderer? I'm just asking because one of ours reappeared after a couple of months' absence.

Our cats currently favour the half-inch of water at the bottom of a bucket catching drips from the outside tap. Yes, they do fall in. Regularly.

fuzzywuzzy · 03/12/2015 08:32

depends, we have two bowls one pusatirs and one downstairs. I relgiously change the water every morning and evening.

So of course they choose to go out in th garden and drink the dirtiest water they can find in an old bucket or something.

they drink more water when they're eating dry foods.

My cat is the only member of the household who drinks from a glass. She has it next to her food bowl on the floor and she uses it a fair bit but it doesn't stop her lapping at the bath after we shower. She won't drink out of a bowl though, it has to be a human glass.

My partner and I drink from flasks at all times because we were so sick of sharing our water with her. I do miss his cries of rage as he heard the telltale 'thlp thlp' of a cat's tongue in his glass for the third time that evening. Happy times.

foragogo · 03/12/2015 13:13

Mine rarely drinks from the bowl, in fact i have never actually seen her do so. However, whenever i do the ironing, i use a large jug of water to fill up the steam generator resevoir and as soon as she sees it she goes mad for it. So ive given up now and just leave it out for the rest of the week after ive filled it up.

WitchWay · 03/12/2015 14:16

Mine hardly ever drank from their plastic bowl - I trod on it & broke it & started using a ceramic bowl which they are drinking from regularly - expect they didn't like the plasticky flavour. They can't read that it says RABBIT on the bowl...

LanceLottie, no he isn't :( really not like him and we are distraught but have a very active loveable kitten keeping on our toes. Every now and again I have a real sinking heart feeling :(

We found his collar the next morning (was one designed to come off) - he doesn't even stay out over night so I fear the worst :(

Florabella22 · 03/12/2015 16:03

My boy will only drink from a dripping tap and I will happily sit there listening to him lap and swallow
My girl only drinks milk from a bowl, never water but loves a puddle on the patio.

chipshop · 05/12/2015 09:59

Nope my cat won't drink of of his water bowl.

I take an ice cold small Evian bottle up to bed and we've got into the routine of me pouring it into the cap for him to drink out of - he'll have up to ten cap fulls before bed which takes forever. DP lies next to me rolling his eyes!

Greengardenpixie · 05/12/2015 19:42

Not until it was very old. It never touched a drop until this year. The vet suspected kidney/thryoid issues very common with older cats.

EllieJayJay · 05/12/2015 22:42

My kitten has a thing about sinks, goes mental when you go to the loo to try and get in the sink - or to drink to lounge about / supervise people having a bath

Sorry off topic but was nice to see other crazy cats in sinks

EllieJayJay · 05/12/2015 22:43

My little cat also likes Evian... Maybe she is just posh :)

So cute with the cap filling :) I missed that one on first look
