Do cats ever drink the water you put down for them?

My kitten never seems to drink her water, but is obsessed by water. Tries to catch it from the tap. Sits in the sink ages.

yes, sometimes I'm away for a few days & the water is obviously gone down in the 2 bowls they regularly drink from. They also use puddles, my bedside water, etc.

Epilepsyhelp · 21/11/2015 22:05

Ours like bedside table water glasses best but they do use the water fountain all the time too.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 21/11/2015 22:09

I was once so shocked to see OldBoy drinking out of his clean water bowl that I took a picture. That was about 6 months ago. He will drink out of the manky bowl that's outside though.

GoneAndDone · 21/11/2015 22:10

Mine does but she has a very naice Emma Bridgewater french bowl as her water bowl and filtered water from the Brita jug.

Middle class cat. Grin

mineofuselessinformation · 21/11/2015 22:10

Mine (if the choice is available i.e. he hasn't chosen to stay in for the day), will only drink from an algae-filled bowl of mankiness. If I wash it out, he leaves it til it's revolting again. Who knew!
And he also like to lick the top of the dustbins.

Minimammoth · 21/11/2015 22:28

Thanks everyone, I feel a whole lot better, cos I was thinking she might not be drinking enough. Definitely drinks out of bedside glass and any left over cold tea. I scoop her out of the toilet. I will stop worrying.

Mine doesn't.

He does, however, drink from the dog's bowl Hmm
The dog prefers to drink rainwater from outside.

chemenger · 21/11/2015 22:38

Pointless is right, in my experience they will only drink from a bowl if it is well away from food bowls, ours is on the other side of the kitchen and they do both drink from it.

Pipestheghost · 21/11/2015 22:50

My cat was very adept at standing outside the bathroom door, whenever anyone flushed the chain she'd be in like a shot to lap up the fresh water in the bowl Grin

bigbadbarry · 21/11/2015 22:53

Only when it's been down for a bit and is a bit mucky - say they've managed to drop some food in it. All three will drink from the pond; one likes running tap water. One doesn't drink anything but likes to eat cucumber.

Vinorosso74 · 21/11/2015 22:56

Ours likes puddles and water from a glass. She would jump on the sink to drink from a tap, got a bit sick of cat hair in it so tried moving water bowl away from food and now she drinks from it. She still likes drinking puddles and from a glass though.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 21/11/2015 23:05

Yes and they've never shown any interest in any other water in the house. It's tucked in a corner well away from their food bowls.

NahItsOkTa · 21/11/2015 23:07

Yes I'd echo the point about keeping the water bowls in a different place to the food bowls - ours will only drink enough if we keep a bowl of water on the upstairs landing.

QOD · 21/11/2015 23:08

My cat drinks from the shower tray, any skanky water in a plant pot, dds bedside water glass and the bath when I am in it

But also from his bowl. We followed that weird advice that they won't drink and eat in the same place so his water is by the sink on the floor and food is right over the other side of the breakfast bar

MistressoftheYoniverse · 21/11/2015 23:09

Yes mine do...but it is in a completely different area from the food bowls..they used to drink from the bathroom tap but the are now very content to drink from the bowl we fill with filtered water...I see them drink from dodgy puddles outside too..can't beat scary puddle water Grin

Savagebeauty · 21/11/2015 23:11

Mine does and its right next to get food. Drinks from puddles too

PinkParsnips · 21/11/2015 23:11

I once read that a cat's instinct is to never search for food and water in the same place so if you put the water dish in a different area of the house to their food they will drink it and it did work with my cat.

CMOTDibbler · 21/11/2015 23:12

My three will never drink any water put down for them, no matter where that is. I've left bowls of water in the shower tray to try and stop the pathetic licking of the shower tray (ignored), on the bathroom floor to avert toilet diving (ignored) and so forth.
A former cat only liked to drink from a slow running tap, and one current cat occasionally asks for this

BuggersMuddle · 21/11/2015 23:15

Sounds normal to me. BuggersMoggy would prefer old water and cat milk on the turn. We bought him a car water fountain and he's not the least bit interested.

exWifebeginsat40 · 21/11/2015 23:15

older cat has her own glass on the kitchen worktop. littlely drinks out of her bowl but it startles her every time.

I don't care if you judge me about cats on the worktop. all yours do it when you're not looking.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 21/11/2015 23:27

Grin exWife... allow me to dream please lady!

GRW · 22/11/2015 09:03

Mine does now because she is 18 and has kidney failure which means she is always thirsty. I have put an extra water bowl for her upstairs so she doesn't have to move far off the bed.

TheSpectreOfMorningtonCrescent · 22/11/2015 09:15

Sometimes, like today when it's too cold to go out, but manky bucket water from outside or bathroom tap is favourite. Cat before used to stalk us coming out of the shower to lick our wet feet.

iwantanewcar · 22/11/2015 09:23

Mine most certainly will not drink from HIS own water bowl. No siree. But the jug I use for ironing - most certainly. Also running water from a tap and outside water. I m not very keen on him drinking from the toilet - DS has a habit of kissing the cat on the lips. Although he did stop that when I hissed toilet breath.

LittleCandle · 22/11/2015 09:24

Candlecat 1 prefers to drink from the dog's bowl most of the time. I am not sure I have ever seen Candlecat 2 drink from anything - except possibly a scummy puddle in a disused flower pot. Candledog will drink both his water and the cats'. My previous Candlecat would only drink running water and it was impossible to go to the toilet without him beating you there. He then demanded to have the cold tap turned on, and would happily lie in the basin getting soaked!
