Time to let go?

My Tonkinese cats are now 17. The male is fit and healthy, eats well and is very alert, purring and happy. His sister is rapidly losing weight, a bit wobbly, not washing properly and hiding in corners though she will sit on my lap and be stroked. You can feel every bone, her coat is rough and staring and she isn't eating though she is drinking. She is not incontinent.. She seems totally uninterested in anything at all.
At what point should I take her to the vet? I love her.

Yes I spoke to the vet. The OOH service rotates between several practises and today it is almost 20 miles from us. I told him everything and he heard the noise she was making. He said she sounded disoriented rather than in pain and recommended waiting till tomorrow rather than subjecting her to the journey.
In fact she is quiet now. He said be prepared for her to go in her sleep otherwise tomorrow it is.
Thank you for being with me today.

I'm very sorry, it does sound like her time is coming. Flowers

Beautiful cats and I am so sorry.

I hope you have a peaceful night - at least she is curled up with her brother. I agree the 20-mile journey would be a difficult one.

When I was in a similar situation on a sunday a couple of years ago (18 year old girl cat) I hung on over sunday night & rang my vet as soon as they opened at 8am, they were lovely and told me to bring her over immediately - I knew there would be no other option but PTS. Very sad & I do feel for you Flowers

I'm so sorry. Give her a big gentle squeeze from me. Very sad times for you all.

Aw poor old girl. They're lovely cats. Very sad Sad

Wolfiefan · 01/11/2015 19:04

I'm so sorry you are facing this. We had our 19 year old pts in July and it was the hardest thing (but right for her)

I really hope it is just a blip. I lost my cat in 2013 and still feel the guilt. It's so hard.

Pranmasghost · 01/11/2015 19:24

Thank you so much. She peed in her bed twice so I have put a small litter tray beside a cardboard box that she loves.
I offered some minced chicken breast but she turned away. She had a few sips of water, still wailing occasionally. This is horrible.

I'm sure you're doing everything by just being there for her... She knows you love her. These moments are so horrible. Look after all of you.

timtam23 · 01/11/2015 20:07

This sounds very hard for you all. I guess the OOH vet does not do house calls?

cozietoesie · 01/11/2015 20:15

Keep her warm and stay as close to her as you can - touching and talking if possible. (Puppy/incontinence pads should help with any accidents or - at a push - old towels beneath her.)

How is her brother doing?

Pranmasghost · 01/11/2015 22:31

Her brother has climbed into the box with her. They have a proper basket with a pet sheepskin but have always loved a cardboard box. I have put old towels in the box and put the litter tray beside it.
Her brother is a month younger (same father, different mothers) and he is healthy, good appetite and glossy coat.
I'll phone our vet first thing tomorrow. Maybe a steroid injection might help but at her age it can't be long.

Awww they both look comfortable. Is she a little more settled now?

isamonster · 01/11/2015 23:03

That's so lovely that she has her brother to cuddle up to.

cozietoesie · 02/11/2015 00:09

That's good that her brother has climbed in with her. She won't know that she's a sick girl - just that she feels lousy, probably - so him being there will provide great comfort and normalcy.

Take care.

roseandgrey · 02/11/2015 06:43

So lovely she has her brother. How are you all this morning? I went through this six months ago with my lovely old girl, so I know how you are feeling. Sending you lots of love Flowers

TheGreenNinja · 02/11/2015 07:08

How are things this morning Pranma?

Pranmasghost · 02/11/2015 08:47

We have an appointment at 9:10.
She hasn't moved from the box and he was still with her this morning. I tried to get her to take a drink and she had maybe two laps of water then put her head down again.

My lovely little cat was put to sleep at 9:15 this morning. She would have been 18 on Thursday.
Her name was Guzel Kedi which is Turkish for beautiful cat and she was truly special , sweet and gentle. The nicest cat we have ever had.
Thank you all for your support the last few days.
