Does your cat wake you during night?

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 27/10/2015 20:34

My cat wakes me once or twice a night about 3, 4, 5am. She's usually headbutting me. I stroke her and she stops. It's impossible to ignore though - she butts HARD!!

She's 9yrs old and I got her a month ago. I obviously don't want to shut her out of bedroom but do y'all have any tips?

Shes not allowed out yet as needing more vaccines.

Thanks!

It's probably for reassurance, unless she's hungry.

If you shut her out, she will either scratch all the carpet up around the doorframe or yowl loudly.

Be thankful that it only lasts for a few minutes!

VulcanWoman · 27/10/2015 20:47

I'd try and send her out of the room, she might get the message, if that didn't work I'd put her outside.

VulcanWoman · 27/10/2015 20:50

My cat always has biscuits and water at hand, he usually has a night time snack, if they've ran out he will protest by sicking up a fur ball on my nice rug.

ragged · 27/10/2015 20:53

I lock them in the dining room if they do stuff like this.

AnneElliott · 27/10/2015 20:57

All 4 of mine do this! I leave biscuits out and shut them out if they continue!

cozietoesie · 27/10/2015 20:58

What are her feeding times during the day?

Girlfriend36 · 27/10/2015 21:04

My cats would do this so they have a warm bed, plenty of food, fresh water and a litter tray in the kitchen and are confined there for the night. They are used to it so its never been an issue, I need my sleep!

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 27/10/2015 21:09

Hello, shes indoors only at the mo and a tiny bit tubby so she gets:

7.30am - one wet pouch
6.30pm - one wet pouch & a tiny bit of my dinner if its meat/fish
11pm: small handful of dental dry food stuff from vet. she eats this straightaway so overnight, her bowl is empty except for water.

I shut mine in the kitchen, three flights of stairs down. There's no way I'm having my sleep disturbed by a cat!

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 27/10/2015 21:13

Oh but snuggling up in bed etc is one of the reasons I wanted a puss!

We shut ours out of the bedroom or they would wake us up every five minutes.

bonzo77 · 27/10/2015 21:15

Just live with it. She might settle down once she's been with you longer. Mine is 5, had her from 12 weeks. She used to wake me many many times in the night so we shut her in the kitchen. Since we moved house 4 months ago she's not really done it. I'm up at night doing baby night feeds, and baby is in our room. She comes for the dregs of the bottles though!

Penfold007 · 27/10/2015 21:15

Blimey two pouches a day! She's hungry

gamerchick · 27/10/2015 21:16

Mine does occasionally, it's definitely a reassurence thing with her. It gets less and less as time goes on but doesn't completely stop.

Girlfriend36 · 27/10/2015 21:19

My cat is currently snuggled up with me in bed, he also snuggles with me on the sofa and loves weekend morning snuggles in bed. However when it is time for me to go to sleep - he goes in the kitchen!

VulcanWoman · 27/10/2015 21:19

Does all the food get eaten straight away.
My cat has one wet pouch about 6am then another about 2pm, I put out about a handful of biscuits in the morning and he picks at them, I top them up a bit before bed.

Norfolknway · 27/10/2015 21:22

Yes, he walks all over my head and purrs in my ear.

I don't mind too much but DH takes him downstairs and shuts him in the kitchen or puts him out.

I think he's just bored and wants some attention

randallflagg1 · 27/10/2015 21:26

I think that they get lonely and just want some reassurance. That's the thought that prevents me from turning my cat into a pair of slippers at 3am every morning.

LeftMyRidingCropInTheMortuary · 27/10/2015 21:28

Depends on the flavour of the pouch whether it's all eaten immediately or she leaves a bit!

Should i leave more food out during the day? Shes not supposed to get too much dry food.

girlfriend - goes in the kitchen of own accord or by force?

VulcanWoman · 27/10/2015 21:38

I wouldn't bother with any more food in the day, shame she doesn't leave a few biscuits for a midnight snack. My cat gets restless if he doesn't do his patrolling routine outside about ten times a day, the rest of the time he sleeps. Hopefully the time goes fast until the injections are finished. I personally will still let them go outside but of course that's up to you.

longdiling · 27/10/2015 21:43

Only if she wants feeding so I try and leave her evening meal as late as possible! Otherwise we get a wake up call in the early hours of the morning and she's VERY persistant. She'll wake the kids up if we don't respond.

VulcanWoman · 27/10/2015 21:45

You've got to show them who's boss or they'll walk all over you literally, with regards to putting them in another room. We will always be their servants though, that's cats for you.

LocalEditorEssex · 27/10/2015 21:48

My two girl cats would never do this. They stay asleep until I get up. My boy cat however, he often wakes me up..he is very demanding.
He wants food at 5, 6 am. I generally try and ignore him.

QforCucumber · 27/10/2015 21:51

Our 2 are closed in the kitchen/diner overnight they have beds, food, water, massive scratch post. they get a pouch each at 7:30am and another at 5pm then hAve a constant supply of biscuits.
If we let them roam they wake us with nudges and purrs and we like our sleep haha! They know bedtime now, we just shout them and they come running and into their beds they're like dogs ha!
