Should I rehome this kitty?

We sort of ended up at the cat shelter today just to take a look at the cats.

There's a 10 year old neutered male cat there. He's in good health, but is very shy and has been there since April.

He came in with several other cats having been rescued from a semi derelict house that had no heating or lighting. They were being fed by a woman who's since been prosecuted for neglect of these cats.

We went into his pen and sat down and he hid in a cat tube. We stroked him lots and he started purring. He's a big softy.

He's a real cat lovers cat rather than being outgoing and confident, so we could manage him fine as we're a quiet household and have lots of experience with cats.

I'd have to phone the insurance to find out how much it would cost each month.

Would it be a risky thing to do to take an older cat on?

Fabulous! I think you should, without a doubt Smile

We got a middle aged cat (9-10yo) 2 yrs ago & he hasn't had a single medical issue yet. Not unless you count fleas.

Had to spend £400 on med bills for a 2-3yo cat, though (accident, argh!)

Black cats are absolutely stunning IMO Smile plus I've always found them to be very affectionate. I bloody adore my boy, he's wonderful Grin
I really don't understand why they are overlooked Sad

hiddenhome2 · 20/09/2015 21:33

Wow, lovely photos Smile

Do you think the others will be okay? They might be a bit disgusted at bringing a chap into the house.

Aww! I think you have already decided you are going to adopt him.

What a cutie.

MissMarpleCat · 20/09/2015 21:50

IME, they will adjust. All my cats I've homed have.
You're obviously a cat lover and that is the most important thing.
It will work because you will make it work.
Your current cats will get used to him. Please home him, he needs you Star

MissMarpleCat · 20/09/2015 22:01

How did Pearl and FatCat get on when they first met and how do they do now?

pinkrosa that cat iis a beautiful beast! You lucky bugger Smile

hiddenhome2 · 20/09/2015 23:25

FatCat was pretty appalled at first, but now they knock around together. Pearl jumps on her which FatCat doesn't appreciate, but I tell Pearl off and she's started to think twice before doing it. They chase each other round the garden.

FatCat was pretty chuffed when Pearl went missing Hmm and went in the huff when she returned, but soon got over her disappointment Grin

I worry that they'll put him down if nobody takes him. It's the RSPCA shelter and I think they do euthanise Sad

I think we might go back tomorrow.

If you think they may pts then you HAVE to rescue him.
Don't let that happen, I'm bloody in tears here.
He needs to come to you, or at the very least save him and find a feline friend to take him on.

cozietoesie · 20/09/2015 23:53

I have had some bad experiences with more than one cat - but then I've had some exceptionally demanding Siamese who generally see other cats only as the enemy.

I suspect that the big one is 1 increased to 2 and that after that, it's easier. The girls should lord it over him as a lowly male as well, I reckon. (Once they've spat occasionally, for form's sake.)

Did you indicate an interest in William when you were there?

MissMarpleCat · 21/09/2015 00:05

cozie I've got a siamesse x and she's definitely the biggest fucker of all my cats, but she's an adorable fucker Grin

hiddenhome2 · 21/09/2015 00:13

Oo, I'd be scared of a Siamese. They seem so 'assertive' Grin

Yes, we definitely expressed an interest and they gave us an adoption form and pack.

He looked so sad, yet was still purring. Poor soul living in that house Sad

cozietoesie · 21/09/2015 00:19

Well - you wouldn't want to take one on if you were lily-livered, let me put it like that. Grin

They're quite exceptionally loving and cuddly to their people though. Smile

It sounds to me as if William recognized his Mum when you did your visit?
