I'm getting a kitten today

I'm so excited. It's all been a bit last minute as we only found out yesterday and we are getting him today. A friend of ours has been let down twice with a home for her last Kitten so we said we would take it. We've not even seen him yet but I've been told he's just a standard black and white shorthair cat and is very good natured and already litter trained, has been wormed and frontlined. He's 13 weeks old in a couple of days.

I've just came off nightshift and instead of going to bed I'm heading out to buy supplies as we have nothing in. I'm thinking I will be needing a litter box, litter, bowls, food, catbed (although fully expect him not to sleep in it) some toys and some treats. Have I missed anything?

Sorry I'm not on to ask a question as such I just wanted to share my happy news.

I quite like Chris but I think the full Christopher might be more fitting for a grown cat. (And DD could shorten it as she saw fit. Smile)

RubbishMantra · 12/06/2015 00:19

Aww, he's lovely!

I quite like Chris the Cat, has a certain ring to it. Or Dave, Steve, Keith.

And YES. A Truth! Kittens or cats are ALWAYS a good idea! I have 2 miaowing nutters. Not a day goes by where they don't remind me of their awesomeness.

HemanOrSheRa · 12/06/2015 07:47

How about Geoffrey? Geoff on a good day, Geoffrey on a naughty day Grin.

Pumpkinette · 12/06/2015 08:21

DH has offered the name Oscar which I quite like. DD not so keen.

Back to look at the new pictures...... dear god but kitten pictures are sooooooo cute.

Pumpkinette · 12/06/2015 11:43

Thanks for the lovely comments everyone. I think he's beautiful.

We have settled on Oskar for a name (DH insists on the k rather than a c Hmm )

He's found a good hiding place somewhere and he keeps disappearing and re appearing. He's appears to be hungry quite a lot. He ate a full pouch at 8 and was crying for food again by quarter to 11 so I gave him another 1/2 pouch and he's eaten that too.

Anyway here are some more photos for you.

He's quite big! My kitten is tiny Love the name

RubbishMantra · 12/06/2015 15:21

As a kitten, mine liked to have a hidey-hole for when it all got a bit overwhelming for him. I think when it's all new, they like to have a quiet place to retreat to when they need it.

And he really is lovely. He's going to be a big lad!

HemanOrSheRa · 12/06/2015 15:25

Ooh good choice of name. He looks like an Oskar. I really, really want another cat or kitten so badly now Envy.

Pumpkinette · 14/06/2015 03:06

Just thought I'd come on to give you an update on Oskar. He's settled in really well now. He appears to have taken a shine to DH (a self proclamed 'not a cat person') and follows him around the house. I know DH is secretly really chuffed and will text me if he out the house to see how he's doing.

The first night home he didn't cry at night like I was expecting, he just picked a spot behing the couch and went to sleep. We pretty much gave home free run of the house from the second day and he is still sticking to behind the couch at night. To be honest I'm really surprised he sleeps at night, the cats I had growing up were very lively at night.

He's eating quite a lot just now. He will easily put away 4/5 pouches and has constant access to kitten biscuts that he picks at sporadically. I'm not sure if it's a combination of the type if food or if maybe he could be doing with a second dose of wormer. I've still got him in the same food he was having before I got him (tiger kitten pouches and go cat biscuts) but I will be switching him gradually to better quality food. I'm still researching food brands.

He's quite affectionate but still a bit skittish when people are walking around. He like getting rubs and will purr and lie on his back for tummy rub but I don't think he is going to be a lap cat. He will stay for about 30 seconds and then jump down.

Just a little note for some of the previous comments. Is he big for 12 weeks? I think he quite long on the body and legs but as it's been years since I've been around kittens I can't really remember whats normal for 3 months.

He looks big to me for 12 weeks, asbo was similar size if not smaller at 16 weeks.

Asbo is 6kg. He's a gorgeous cat.

RubbishMantra · 14/06/2015 14:16

Your handsome boy is HUUUGE for 12 weeks. But he's half Ragdoll, so completely normal for the breed. When I brought little Monsieur home at 13 weeks, you'd have thought he was an 8 week old.

I wouldn't be so sure about him not being a lapcat! At the moment, it's summer, and he's a kitten exploring an exciting new world. You may find he becomes a snuggler.

CtrlAltDelicious · 14/06/2015 20:37

I think he's big. He looks a similar size to my Olive and she's just turned 1!

Fluffycloudland77 · 14/06/2015 21:43

Big paws too.

cozietoesie · 14/06/2015 22:34

He's gorgeous - and I love that DH is secretly chuffed to have been 'chosen'.

Pumpkinette · 15/06/2015 17:33

How on earth do you all manage to weigh your cats? I could just imagine trying to put him on the kitchen scale and keep him there long enough to get a reading.

I'm taking him to the vet on Thursday for a checkup and his injections so maybe they can weigh him when he's there. I don't think he's that heavy but he has a big frame so I suppose he will fill out as he grows.

He is cute! Smile

I have a 14 week old kitten called Bertie. He is a bundle of energy! I had to really talk DH into getting a cat and now he is totally in love with him.

JesseandCeline · 15/06/2015 19:42

Pumpkinette, you go on the scale without the cat and then holding the cat. Difference in weight is the cat's weight

sashh · 15/06/2015 20:44

Jesse is quite right about the standard way to weigh a cat, you can also weigh them in a carrier or for my madam just wait until she sits on the scales.

Pumpkinette · 16/06/2015 10:02

Oh I see. I don't actually own scales anymore but I've been meaning to get some for about 4 years a while now so I suppose this is a good excuse. I will try to remember to pick some up this week . I'm still not convinced he weighs much at all. He's very light when you pick him up.

Oskar got his first set of vaccinations and check up this morning and done brilliantly at the vets. He weighs 4.3 kg which is more than I thought he would be.

cozietoesie · 19/06/2015 12:54

At 14 weeks old? He's going to be a big cat.

Has DH referred to him as 'My Boy' yet? That's always a dead giveaway. Wink

girliefriend · 19/06/2015 12:56

4.3kg? That is massive for a kitten!! My adult large boy cat is about that Grin are you sure he isn't part tiger?!

Clobbered · 19/06/2015 13:02

4.3 kg, OMG, you have a monster on your hands! He's lovely. Enjoy!

cozietoesie · 19/06/2015 13:03

I'd be wanting to check the weighing wasn't in lbs actually. That's more than Seniorboy!
