Neighbours dogs have killed my cat. Distraught.

I've name changed as this will totally out me.

On Thursday night, my darling 5 year old cat went out. she was the most timid cat, I rescued her as a kitten from an abisive household. It took her months to trust me but for the past 5 years, she has been my shadow. Scared of everything, she took huge comfort in me.

She didn't come back on Friday, I knew then that she was never coming home. I kept the faith and asked all my neighbours to keep an eye out. She had never been missing for this long. She hardly ever left the garden, if she did I knew her hiding place and she used to pop out when she heard my voice. She wasn't in the hiding spot.

Saturday morning, I started a social networking missing cat campaign. I was still half hoping she was in somebody's house (very unlikely as she was so timid) but I assed she had been hit by a car or something and just wanted to know. Tried the local vet, neighbours again. People on social networks were so helpful.

I went searching. It transpired one of our neighbours, who erected a 12ft fence lately (with spikes on top) has three dogs. Two Staffordshire bull terriers and an enormous bull mastiff. He welled up as he told me he had found my beautiful cat in his garden on Friday morning. He had taken her to the vet who were going to keep her for a few days to see if an owner enquired. She was dead. I asked if his pack of dogs had savaged her, he said not. I told him she had no chance of escape, that his fence was too high, he was visibly upset, profusely apologetic. He told me 3 times what he'd done, said he thought he was doing the right thing when he erected the fence. He took my number and said he'd get the vet to call me when they open tomorrow.

I am heartbroken. My cat was a nervous wreck, scared of her own shadow. I can't understand why she's end up in a garden with three dogs. She barely left the house, she followed me around like a lamb. I'm so upset, I feel her trauma, she must have been so frightened.

I know it's not the dogs fault but I cant help but hate them for it. I don't want to live near them anymore. My other cat (who is very old and frail) looks so lonely and keeps crying at the door for her.

It's unbelievably tragic. I'm utterly heartbroken. She wasn't just a cat, she was my friend, she was my therapy. And I miss her.

Flowers Oh dear, how sad. Your neighbour sounds very kind, and did the right thing.

debricassartcleary · 19/04/2015 13:59

I am sorry to hear that OP.Flowers You have every reason to feel angry and upset, that really is a most tragic event.

debricassartcleary · 19/04/2015 14:02

Also are you allowed to erect a 12ft fence? I thought 6ft was the limit.

I'm so sorry :( how far away is the neighbour from you?

So tragic, I'm so sorry x

MissingKittyCat · 19/04/2015 14:09

I thought 6ft was the limit too. I heard it was because there had been an armed robbery there but he said it was because of children climbing over his wall.

I'm so sorry. Your post made me well up, it's just so awful. I don't have cats at the moment but before my two passed away the worst thing I could imagine was one of them going missing and me not knowing what had happened to them. So at least you know - I know that is no comfort at the moment but in the next days and weeks at least you wont have to worry and imagine her still lost, scared and hungry. I don't blame you for hating the dogs although as you say it wasn't really their fault, I'm glad the owner was so apologetic, hopefully he will rethink his fences and maybe create an escape route for smaller animals.

You sound like a lovely cat owner and maybe when you feel ready you can rescue another cat the way you rescued her x

MissingKittyCat · 19/04/2015 14:09

The wall is about 10 metres away but to the side so the fence doesn't obscure anyone's view but theirs.

OP I'm upset for you after reading your thread. This is unbelievably sad and I would feel exactly the same as you about living there.

I don't know what to tell you - this is an awful situation.

You're neighbour sounds decent - he must be gutted. He must have thought he was doing the right thing by building such a large fence.

Sad
MissingKittyCat · 19/04/2015 14:10

mess idols to, given time. But what if it happened again?

:( I'm so sorry. I'd be devastated to.

Hostessonabudget · 19/04/2015 14:13

I'm so sorry about your cat.

I don't understand though - the neighbour said the dogs didn't attack her, that he found her in the garden dead? What? Sorry I don't follow?

MissingKittyCat · 19/04/2015 14:16

I didn't ask for detail of her injuries, I will ask the vet. But I assumed either they killed her quick without tearing her apart (thank god) or she died of shock. She was so jumpy, her heart probably gave out when she realised where she was. I don't know much about dogs but don't they play with their pray rather than destroying it? They're obviously well fed, look very healthy. Sad

I'm so sorry for your loss. Be kind to yourself. It's a horrific shock.

MessEnoughClean · 19/04/2015 14:23

It's always going to be in your mind as a worry, that's only natural - if it was me I'd be revisiting the neighbour after a while and asking what changes he's made. Or if you really can't live with the worry consider other options such as making your garden harder to get out of or even rescuing a cat that has to stay indoors for whatever reason (FIV being the main one so obviously not while you have another cat but there must be other reasons)

Have you decided what you're going to do when the vet contacts you?

dogs kill instantly not like cats
so it would have been quick

So sorry, it's a terrible thing
dogs can be dangerous

MissingKittyCat · 19/04/2015 14:26

I will ask the vet their opinion on what killed her. I don't need to see her. I want her collar and I want her cremating, I don't want her adhes I don't think. I know her soul has gone back into the universe. Gosh I miss her. She was such an annoying yet wonderful cat.

I don't blame him tough I'm an animal lover, I appreciate his dogs are beautiful creatures and they were in their own garden. Just can't understand how my cat ended up in there with them!

TimeToGetUp · 19/04/2015 14:30

Cats play with and torment prey. In my experience, dogs just kill. I'm sure it would have been quick.

I have to say, I think your neighbour sounds reasonable - what more could he have done? His dogs didn't get into your garden, your cat went into his.

The fence it high, but if the cat could have managed t get in, surely it could have been able to get out again.

Your neighbour didn't ignore the cat, nor did he set the dogs on it.

You neighbour took the cat to the vet and tried to help it.

I am sorry about the situation, but I don't know how you can blame you neighbour (I would feel the same as you, but am trying to see things logically as an outsider).

TimeToGetUp · 19/04/2015 14:31

Sorry, missed your update about not baking him

TimeToGetUp · 19/04/2015 14:31

Blaming...

tabulahrasa · 19/04/2015 14:31

"I don't know much about dogs but don't they play with their pray rather than destroying it?"

No, they don't hunt like cats do...it's pretty much an instant thing.

For what it's worth IMO I don't think the height of the fence could have made much difference - if she got over it on the way in she would have been able to get out again.
