Is £100 a lot for a grey kitten

Looking to get a new kitten and would love a grey one. Ive seen some advertised but they are £100 each. This seems expensive to me for a non pedigree kitten. Is it because he is grey?

Prolly a massive generalisation but IME black and black/white cats are confident and friendly. I miss our two like mad and would love to have a couple more but it was so heartbreaking when they were killed on the road. (Live in the country and the road is not that busy, except during rush hour , not a great combination for daft cats. ) We are currently being visited by a very lovable little B/W and i fear for him, he's a wanderer .

catneuterer yes I am going to have her neutered as soon as she weans the kittens. I'm keeping one of the kittens too and will have that one done.

Sadly my situation (H leaving and much upset/chaos in the house as well as a resulting perilous financial situation) meant that the cat didn't get neutered when intended, so now I'm dealing with the consequences - I do feel very guilty about it.

PekeandPollicle · 14/04/2015 06:49

We have a gorgeous glossy jellicle. She's very protective, especially of clean washing and a little bit fierce.

We also have 2 gingers - 1 adopted us and no one claimed him after 6 months and one rescue.

My sister has a grey Persian which she got for free - it has a deformed tail and was going to be drownedShock

I do love the gingers but it is sad to know that there is such a shortage of owners for blacks. DH is very partial to panthers so we'll rescue one next time.

thecatneuterer · 14/04/2015 08:39

Henrietta well at least you will be sorting it out. And I've just read your other thread. You did absolutely everything you could and i'm sorry you lost the kitten. It's certainly not unusual though and the chances of a happy outcome were vanishingly low. You should feel proud that you gave it the best chance possible though.

I am shocked that black cats are the least popular. My friends cat had kittens and I said I would have two, there were three tabby, two black and one black with a white chest and socks and a small white moustache. I really wanted the two black ones - they are so sleek and stylish alas one of the black ones had bonded with the black and white so I had the pair and they are seven now. The black one prowls about like a pantha looking elegant and stylish and the black and white is my little friend, she follows me everywhere and is so sweet natured. Cant imagine why these coloured cats aren't popular.

2fat4that · 14/04/2015 14:26

I love all cats, but particularly black cats. I've had 4 so far. At the moment I have a rescue siamese, a black cat that we got as a kitten for free, a rescue dog and our latest addition, a long haired rescue tortoiseshell, who had been in the rescue far too long because she's a tad grumpy Wink If I could I would adopt all the black cats that need homes. They are beautiful and have lovely temperaments.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/04/2015 14:30

I love black cats. It's the only colour I'll have.

Am currently tolerated by 2 black neutered males. Soft as butter, the pair of them. Both rescue.

Corneliusmurphy · 14/04/2015 14:44

I think I read somewhere statistically black cats are more likely to be run over Sad however I have always wanted a black cat, the kids are campaigning for ginger because of kwazi and dp is remaining unmoved. Sulk.

Mitzimaybe · 14/04/2015 14:54

Wow, I am shocked at this cat colour popularity list. It's also made me feel guilty because I'm looking into getting a pedigree next. My first cat was black - I always wanted a "witch's cat" even though I'm not a witch. I also had her black & white brother; I chose him because he seemed the most friendly of the kittens but I chose her because she was black. Got them from a colleague, no money changed hands. My next cat was a rescue (tabby).

Mitzimaybe · 14/04/2015 15:01

Oh and I should have said, the black and white friendly kitten grew into an extremely friendly cat. I still miss him!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 14/04/2015 15:21

This thread and thecatneuterers post has reminded me of when we acquired our last one in '07 the woman at the CPL was amazed that we came in specifying 'black tom'. There were posters all over the office bit where we filled out the rehoming paperwork along the lines of 'please don't overlook the black cats, they often get left behind'. DH asked the woman about it and she said it was partly to do with superstition and old beliefs (bad juju and all that) and partly because black just isn't a very 'pretty' coat colour in lots of people's opinion (can look dull, dusty, dandruffy). Of course, in my opinion they can look glossy, sleek and v chic. Although 'my geriatric 19 year old with dementia is far from sleek and chic these days Sad and '07 rescue cat is now a big jeffer who always has his tongue half hanging out Hmm.

Cornelius - luminous collars are a black cat's best friend, especially in winter. I get the disgustingly bright yellow flea collars for my tribe when it's dark so much of the time. But still, bad stuff happens now and then.

The only car tragedy I've had in 15yrs on my little road (though close to may) has been one. I still cry about it, but it was one. Not many in the grand scheme of roads and things. And my many, many rescue cats.

I am so loving this and the other thread about b/w beauties. Food for my soul.
Thank you all!

tipsytrifle · 14/04/2015 20:40

many not may - oops!

Hello, this is my first post - was looking around and this topic caught my interest.

I'm so relieved that there are so many kind hearted people out there with big kitty gangs! I have 7. Every single one is a rescue, and every one is a different colour, And I love them all. My oldest is a 22 black female that came into my garden as a tiny kitten and the owner couldn't be traced and so I kept her. Then a neighbour moved away and I took in her black and white 6 year old Tom. Then I went to our local rspca and took a 3 year old ginger female that had some 'personality issues' and was on their books for the 3rd time - I wasn't especially looking for a ginger, but felt so sorry that she was unwanted and took her! She is now the gentlest and sweetest cat imaginable. I then took in a 7 month tabby female followed by a tortie tabby aged 1 year, both from cats protection. I was then asked if I could help out and foster a sickly tabby female kitten - she has stayed with me and is now a strapping, boisterous happy 1 year old girl. Finally, two weeks ago, the local rspca took in a litter of abandoned kittens. I only spotted them when I went to donate food to the shelter and was having a chat with the staff .... and clocked the litter. One of the litter was an all grey female. I fell in love with her instantly, and she is now mine, after duly paying the fee and doing the usual paperwork. She is the only one I have every chosen to own on the basis of 'prettiness'. When I saw her I simply melted. No more now - I have my hands full with 7 beautiful creatures between 22 years and 10 weeks old, acquired gradually over time, but a few more recently (in addition to my human family who love and care for them as much as I do). I think I have the space for them and live in a peaceful location with a secluded garden, and every one of them is their own lovely personality. Don't know yet how my grey kitten will mix in, but the other six amazingly all get along brilliantly with each other. By the way, they all have cosy cardboard boxes for their beds with old towels, bedding etc. that have outlived their human use, and toys are made from stuff like string, paper and cardboard (oh, and wine bottle corks ??). Thank you for reading such a long first post.

If you want a cat or kitten, please, please take in a rescue. With love and tlc, I'm confident it will reward you with so much pleasure, whatever colour it is!

Alwaysneedanewiron · 19/05/2015 12:37

Ps don't know how to add a winking smilie, my attempt turned out as two boxes in the post above - oops.

sparkysparkysparky · 19/05/2015 14:26

Interesting situation round our way: to a whisker all the cats are either black, black/ white or white/black. My lovely old lady cat died in March and I promised dd we'd get a kitten after we come back from summer holidays. We will rescue and we don't care about colour (the one that is friendliest to dd) but there's a good chance NewKitten will be one of a crowd of the least popular colours.
