Is £100 a lot for a grey kitten

Looking to get a new kitten and would love a grey one. Ive seen some advertised but they are £100 each. This seems expensive to me for a non pedigree kitten. Is it because he is grey?

I can't express how much we love our black and black and white rescue cats - they are just wonderful with lovely temperaments and beautiful. We are ever grateful to Celia Hammond for rescuing them and letting us bring them home!

crispandfruity · 05/04/2015 15:35

I have 2 panthers. Big panther is a fab hunter, looks splendid but is very thick. Little panther is clever and devious. I love them both!

minsmum · 05/04/2015 15:52

We picked our kittens because the rescue let slip that in five and a half months they had had no interest at all. They are a ginger boy and a tortie girl . The rescue thought it was because they were extremely nervous. Everyone seems to want immediate lap cats. They have been here since November he is now the biggest cuddle monster we have ever had, she is still quite stand offish

Surely you have to give a reasonable donation for a rescue cat though....17 years ago ours were £45.

Black and white. I didn't give any consideration to the colour, but had imagined having a ginger cat.

I wouldn't want a white cat. They look a bit...white. Grin Confused

I would love to have a long haired cat, but know it's more work less practical than a short haired.

I dream of having a Main Coon.

minsmum · 05/04/2015 16:15

We gave £70 per kitten and they came speyed, inoculated ,wormed, de fleed and micro chipped. In fact he wasn't because he was ill when they took him but still a bargain.

lavendersun · 05/04/2015 16:24

I can't wait until I move and can have a cat again - I rescued three kittens a very long time ago, the two oldest lived until 17 and 18.

Now I live near a main road and am waiting, patiently, until I can get at least two more.

I am shocked at the colour preferences tbh, a kitty is a kitty is a kitty.

BuggersMuddle · 06/04/2015 20:28

I am amazed that black and white is so far down the list.

BuggersMoggy (inherited from a neighbour with agreement) is an enormous black and white tom. I always thought we were very fortunate to inherit such a handsome cat. Clearly he has me well-brainwashed Grin

Most of the greys and gingers I've encountered have been respectively aloof / cranky.

I would worry about buying from a random. Not just from the encouraging breeding perspective, but general health, why were they bred etc.

loveliesbleeding1 · 06/04/2015 20:37

I have a gorgeous blue boy who is 3, and an equally beautiful black and white 9 week old, and I absolutely love them both the same, blue boy was a few hundred pounds from a russian blue breeder, and black and white was £45.buggers blue is very aloof and snooty!.Grin

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/04/2015 20:56

We have two grey cats that come into the garden. H tolerates Smokey and they run around together although Smokey is the most stuck up cat I've ever met. The other one is known as the Little Grey Git as I had to spend over £100 on a microchip cat flap to stop the little sod coming in!

kylesmybaby · 06/04/2015 21:11

i have a wonderful black long haired mummy cat. shes a funny little thing who really only likes me - but that just makes me feel more special. i adore her.

girliefriend · 06/04/2015 21:24

I like tabbies but have a gorgeous black and white cat and a very naughty tortie Wink my mum has a completely black kitten that she worships we all call him her little prince Grin

Its so sad that cats are judged so much on what they look like Confused it makes no sense to me, surely you just want a healthy, happy and hopefully friendly cat!!

My brother once paid £100 for a ginger kitten, he was told it was half burmese Hmm it looked exactly like Garfield Grin

loraflora · 08/04/2015 10:14

When I rescued I actually wanted a black one but the one I chose wasn't deemed suitable for my house. Instead they pushed me in the direction of a b/w cat who had been in foster for months, probably because of both the colour and she came across as timid. She's now a lovely affectionate cat.

RubbishMantra · 08/04/2015 12:46

I remember my grey cat, Bambos Charralamboss. He was the sweetest natured little thing. To those he liked. When visitors came round, he'd jump on the coffee table and fan his tail out like a peacock, demanding to be admired. He was a beautiful looking little creature.

If he didn't take to a person, he'd spit and hiss through the banisters. One time my dad was staying with me. (Hates cats) I let him have my room, whilst I slept on the sofa. Dad came downstairs at bedtime looking sheepish. "The cat's in the bed, and it growled and swiped at me." I had to go and rescue my 6'4" father from a small cat.

He was a moggy, but looked just like a Russian Blue.

The 2 tortie girls next door loved him.

Lancelottie · 08/04/2015 12:55

Actually (shoot me now), I would love another ginger cat to remind me of my childhood moggy. She was a shy, semi-feral ex-farm cat who did a great line in intimidating the neighbour's Rottweiler and had a thing about the sofa buttons. They were Evil and had to be Destroyed -- but she would feel terribly ashamed afterwards and go and hide guiltily in a corner.

However, the current (all-black) cat wouldn't approve of incoming kittens of any variety.

FretYeNotAllIsShiny · 08/04/2015 13:05

My lovely black and white cat came to me. I already had two cats when eldest daughter waltzed in with a tiny kitten one day. She said it had been abandoned. I took one look and pointed out that it was about 8 weeks old and had probably wandered off and sent them knocking on neighbourhood doors. Turns out it was one of a semi-feral litter born a street away. I told her we were not keeping it. That was about five years ago. And she really is the most adorable cat.

chinstrappenguin · 08/04/2015 16:12

We specifically looked for a black cat. Never realised they were so unwanted Sad My black cat is greatSmile

Pleasemrstweedie · 09/04/2015 13:56

I have two blacks. When my friend's cat was pregnant I said 'Put me down for a black one' I had one at six weeks and his brother two years later when his humans couldn't keep him.

They are seventeen next month and I love them both to bits.

HenriettaBarnet · 12/04/2015 15:09

I remember when we were looking for cats a couple of years ago on gumtree - they all cost money, it wasn't possible to get one free. I must admit I was looking for torties as that's what I've always had.

My cat's just had kittens and I'll give most of them away (I already have people lined up in fact) . I hadn't realised about the popularity though. I think that one is black - I think black kittens are really cute. The ginger one is very cute too but is about double the size of the others - eating so much!

Dontstepinthecowpat · 13/04/2015 20:52

I'm amazed by this thread. Our black and white kitty has just had 4 kittens, sadly two of them died - they were very big and her first (and only!) litter.

The other two one black and white and one pure black are thriving. I haven't thought about what to do we will probably keep them unless any close friends or family are looking to rehome them. I felt awful that she was having kittens, I found her a year ago as a seemingly ferral 4 week old. No one claimed her so after a few nights at the vet she became part of the family. It was always my intention to neuter her but it's been a busy period with ill health so it just didn't get to the top of my priority list. She's booked in now for when kittens have weaned.

I've never given a thought to their colour, equally when we rescued our dog it didn't cross my mind Blush

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 13/04/2015 20:59

Aww Hesterton they're so adorable. I need to persuade DH that we can foster another litter asap once our visitors have left.

thecatneuterer · 13/04/2015 22:31

Henrietta kittens on Gumtree do cost money. It's used by people who want to make money from their cats and, if you buy one from them, it encourages them to keep on doing it, while rescue centres are bursting at the seams.

And yes, you may have found people to take your kittens, but that is probably because this is very early in kitten season. If she had had them a couple of months later you wouldn't be able to give them away. And of course your kittens are taking homes that could have gone to rescue cats or kittens.

Cats and kittens are put down every day because there aren't enough homes to go round.

Are you planning to neuter your cat now?
