Change in cat's pupils

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 10:57

I've just noticed that Seniorboy's left hand pupil has changed in size and shape. (It could have been that way for a couple of days, I just don't know.) His right hand pupil is round and large but the left hand one has shrunk, gone into a sort of diamond shape and somehow 'skewed' to his right - it looks almost as if someone had turned his eyeball round a little except that there's no additional white. His left eye is mostly iris now and not pupil.

He'll likely be in to his vet next week anyway so before she sees it, I'm wondering if anyone has come across this before? Given his age, I'm thinking a neurological issue for which no treatment would be appropriate but I don't want him to be in any discomfort.

Haven't heard of it before, cozie.

Seems it might be serious though:m.petmd.com/cat/conditions/eyes/c_ct_anisocoria

I was due to go in to the vet today anyway (to pick up some meds) so on checking whether they were ready, I mentioned the eye and they want him in this afternoon. Probably nothing to be done given his age but perhaps it's as well because he can have his ABs in any case.

Thanks chockbic.

Blessings to you and SeniorBoy.

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/03/2015 12:50

I was going to say vets Cozie could be sign of uncontrolled hypertension.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 12:57

Thanks Lone.

Thanks Mantra. I fear that he's at that age now.

Will you let us know how the debonair monsieur gets on at the vet's?

thecatneuterer · 25/03/2015 13:14

A large, blown pupil usually (in my experience) means blindness related to high blood pressure. But I haven't come across anything like you describe. I hope the vet can be reassuring.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/03/2015 14:38

Oh lord I hope it's not serious.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 15:13

Back now.

After the manner of things, his eye was more or less back to normal by the time we got there - with the administration of his pain meds being the only intervening factor. He was almost impossible for the vet and vet nurse to examine properly - that cat can still squirm at international level and he's very head-sensitive anyway - but from what the vet could see there looked to be no retinal detachment and his 'normal' eye actually had some very light crusting in the corner.

Her suspicion is that he's got a touch of uveitis which has been stirred up to accompany his rhinitis - he's started snottering again to timescale (from the infection that the lab tests show doesn't exist - Huh!) - so got his AB shot as usual. I'll just keep a close eye on him.

No point in starting any work now so I'm about to watch a bad movie and Seniorboy is down the bed preparing to snooze. My cc is weeping quietly in a corner somewhere but Hey Ho.

Thanks for all the positive thoughts.

Fluffycloudland77 · 25/03/2015 16:27

Well it could have been a lot worse.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 17:01

It certainly could - and, interestingly, the vet and vet nurse said that the supplemental pain meds he's on have, in their experience, caused pupil dilation in other patients so it looks as if it could have some effect on eyes.

We'll see anyway. If he's happy, I'm happy also and she certainly didn't suggest any other conditions. (Which I would almost certainly have rejected treatment for but then would have felt bad about that.)

OP posts:
chockbic · 25/03/2015 17:20

Did you say before that he's going blind?

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 17:32

I think so. There have been some big behavioural changes in him over, say, the last 6 months - and over the last couple of weeks, he's started to bang into the odd thing if he goes too fast somewhere. ( He hasn't had any clear clinical signs for the vet to look at so I can only go by his behaviour really because I can't get him to sit an eye exam. He may have some light and dark perception but if so and how much is difficult to establish.)

He manages fairly happily. (As long as he mooches rather than rushes.)

OP posts:
chockbic · 25/03/2015 17:35

I was wondering if that may account for his different pupil size?

You must be worried about him but want to keep him around for as long as possible.

As you say, so long as he is happy. Will be the main thing Flowers

shaska · 25/03/2015 17:46

phew, glad this ended well. No advice or experience to offer, but good to hear he's still up to a bit of squirming should the occasion require it.

cozietoesie · 25/03/2015 22:56

It might I guess, chockbic - it was just so sudden that I had a feeling that this was something else, possibly overlaid on the other sight issues.

(I'm hoping that it is uveitis caused by this localized infection which he seems to get regularly as a result of Gawd Knows What - because the ABs and his immune system could then get it even if only for a time. His eye is back to looking slightly dodgy this evening but he's perky as all get out so Hey Ho. I'll keep an even closer eye on him for a couple of days.)

OP posts:
RubbishMantra · 26/03/2015 13:35

Happy that Monsieur SeniorBoy is still perky. Smile

He should have a fan-club.

Oh - and I found that picture of Oneago and his litter brother in their pure white stage. I just have to get on speaking terms with my printer/scanner to be able to post it for you. (I'll maybe try this evening.)

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/03/2015 14:42

I'm glad he's doing OK Cozie. I've not been around on the Litter Tray for long but I'm rather fond of SeniorBoy!

Christophewouldgetit · 26/03/2015 16:43

I too was worried to see this was the stately Seniorboy but delighted to see your most recent updates... (recent nc in case you're wondering!)

I hope he keeps keeping on Thanks

cozietoesie · 26/03/2015 20:58

As promised, Mantra.

I've had a full and frank discussion with the scanner and come up with this - old picture, I'm afraid. (Oneago is the smaller one.)

They look so fragile. Very munchable kittens.

Dh wants a siamese Hmm, because their low maintance. Bless.

cozietoesie · 26/03/2015 21:40

They were quite fragile. Mum abandoned them pretty well at birth and they had to be taken away and hand-reared by the breeder. That teddy bear thing they're lying on is their substitute 'Mum'.

Low maintenance? Dear Goodness. (Discreet yelp!)
