My cat is giving birth but I don't know if all is well. Help!

She has been really clingy with me, meowing and not wanting to leave my side. Thinking she was probably in labour, I offered her den like boxes but she wouldn't stay in them.

About half an hour ago she gave birth to her first kitten on the carpet near to my feet. After allowing her to clean the kitten, I layed a towel close to her but she immediately grabbed the kitten and took it upstairs and inside a wardrobe.

I can hear the kitten mewing and she is in there with it sort of growling. If I leave the room she follows me out. If I stay in the room she will sit inside with the kitten but periodically comes out to sit with me. When she hears the kitten crying she goes back in but does the low growling noise.

What is going on and what can I do? I know she has more yet to be born. I'm so worried she is rejecting them. This is her first litter btw.

Oh, I love newborn kittens. Hope all goes well. Smile

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/11/2014 00:51

Aww. Now I have actually melted at that picture

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 11/11/2014 00:52

Great that the little baby is feeding. Awwwwwwww

brainfidget · 11/11/2014 00:59

Oh wow! Good luck with the rest of the night OP!

Marking place for photos in the morning!

Tiptops · 11/11/2014 01:10

Did you plan to breed her? Glad she has settled down now but for future reference the breed specific cat club can usually recommend an experienced breeder to mentor you. If in any doubt, obviously she would still need a vet though.

Tiptops · 11/11/2014 01:12

Just seen the photo, is that a moggy? Sorry but it is so irresponsible to let your cat breed. Thousands of cats are stuck in rescue centres and being destroyed because there just aren't enough homes. We really don't need more kittens. Please have your pet spayed Sad

gingee · 11/11/2014 01:24

Well tiptops in our case my car WAS a rescue, we were told she was spayed and lo and behold baby kitties appeared. They were all found fantastic homes and we still see them. We kept one. All spayed after. Sometimes these things happen.

gingee · 11/11/2014 01:24

Car??!! Haha cat!

Tiptops · 11/11/2014 01:34

Ging That's a poor show from the rescue. Did they not shave her to check for a spay scar then?

Glad they all found homes but for every back yard breeder who rehomes a kitten, a potential home for a kitten in rescue is lost.

Thanks everyone. We have kitten two!!! Feeding well.

TipTops, my cat is a pedigree and an indoor only cat. However, she escaped through a tiny window and high up (ground floor though) left open. I hadn't realised she could get out that way. I already feel terrible that this has happened but plan to have the kittens chipped and neutered before rehoming. I am also probably going to keep at least one.

CuttedUpPear · 11/11/2014 05:34

Aw so sweet

sashh · 11/11/2014 06:25

When I was a kid my cat had 2 litters (parents not had cat before didn't think she could get pregnant so soon after first litter) anyway 4 were er... well they went to the vets but my mum kept one for 'the cat's ilk'.

Anyway mummy cat decided the best place for her kitten was the bottom of the wardrobe, and there it lived until it started to explore.

juneybean · 11/11/2014 07:50

Don't get them chipped if you're not keeping them, my breeder told me she was getting her kittens chipped then realising people weren't updating the information.

Amibambini · 11/11/2014 08:07

I actually had a little tear up at the bit where she asked you to help her latch her kit on! I'm not even much of a cat fan. But good luck with the rest of it, it sounds like you have a lovely relationship with your feline friend.

Mulligrubs · 11/11/2014 08:10

Aw gorgeous kitten, please post more pics later Smile

Thanks everyone Smile. We all survived the night and have three kittens Grin. I've had about three hours sleep but feel kind of privileged that she trusts me enough to help her with something like this.

She seems happy and content this morning, the kittens are feeding well so I will leave her be to get some rest. I will post a couple of photos later.

Lovely story Grin

doNOTcallMEhun · 11/11/2014 09:36

So lovely. My cat had kittens when I was a child. 2 died but we kept the fat ginger tom and he lived until 20 a few years back and died curled up in his basket.
