Getting a kitten, very excited!

After careful consideration we've decided to get a kitten. We've looked around our local cpl but non of the cats were suitable (very old, not suited to a family etc). Anyway, our vets is looking after a cat and her 2 kittens, they were found in a log shed. The tabby we're getting is ready in about 3 weeks. I can't wait! I always had cats growing up but haven't had one since I left home 10 years ago. Our ds doesn't know yet, I can't wait to see his face light up.

Any advice on how to settle the kitten in would be gratefully received .

What a cutie. I'm surprised CPL have no kittens. We're overrun with them.

This is a favourite thread of mine for people getting a new cat - although this was an old cat rather than a kitten: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/the_litter_tray/a1681116-Were-probably-getting-a-rescue-cat-soon-What-do-we-need-to-buy-and-how-much-will-upkeep-cost

Most important: neuter at four or five months at the latest and get insurance.

Beautiful! So very exciting. I have a one year old boy we took on at four months old (he was a stray). I'd love a kitten but don't think he would be keen!

thecat, our local cpl is a very small branch they had 3 very old cats who were just looking for somewhere warm and quiet to spend their days, a cat who couldn't be relocated to our area and another younger cats with a virus (can't remember what it was called, hpv maybe) she had to be kept in and we would have struggled because my ds and his friends are in and out all day long. I really wanted to take them all home, felt very sad leaving them there.

Our kittens mum is beautiful and very friendly for a stray, the people who found her are keeping her when the kittens are old enough and a veterinary nurse is having the other female kitten.

Aww how sweet!

We got a tabby five days ago, 8 weeks old. I prepared the kids by telling them that she would be very nervous and probably hide for a day or two etc etc and that we must give her space and time and be gentle.

I got her home, opened her carrier and she stalked out and immediately pounced on a mini ball toy. She then did a few laps of the room, whizzed up the curtains before settling down on the nearest available lap. She used her litter tray an hour later.

I don't want a cat roaming my whole house so I keep bedroom doors shut but apart from that, she's been everywhere quite happily and she sleeps without a murmur in a reception room at night. She sleeps on anyone when she's had her mad half hours, purring away until she wakes again and goes into mad attack mode!

She's an absolute star and it's been so easy. So fingers crossed you'll have the same experience.
