I think I need to say goodbye to my cat [sad]

She had vestibular something or other & was treated twice for it
It came back again & the vet removed her ear

She looks like she has had another stroke - her back legs are splayed and she can't lick & clean her bum as she can't find it, she looks so drunk

I think this is it Sad DD is bereft already

Aw Dear - I remember your previous thread.

Is she to see the vet tonight?

Sad
KatyMac · 19/03/2014 19:32

No - I'll ring in the morning; she is on painkillers so embarrassed rather than in pain

I'm so upset

Of course. You've been battling with this one for so long - and she's not an old cat. Only 8/9 years old if I recall?

Is she comfortable at the moment?

KatyMac · 19/03/2014 19:52

She's 9 in May - her fur is ruffled, so I do wonder about giving her some more pain relief.

She has had for 2kg this morning so could have another 1.25kgs worth this evening I guess - the vet didn't really want me dosing her halfway through the dose - it's a 24hour one; but I guess under the circumstances some more wouldn't hurt

I think her body temp has dropped

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 19/03/2014 22:37

Keep her warm and hold her next to you if you can.

cozietoesie · 19/03/2014 22:38

Sorry, Katy. I'm assuming that she hasn't slipped away?

mineofuselessinformation · 19/03/2014 22:39

If she goes, she will go with love. It sounds like it might be time. I, sorry. Hmm

mineofuselessinformation · 19/03/2014 22:39

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 07:06

Sorry we feLl asleep.

She couldn't move easily , her temp dropped and her legs were sort of loloppy last night and I was sure she wouldn't wake up.

This morning she stood and stretched. And shook then started washing - I guess the crisis is over

I will still take her to the vet tho'

I'm not sure how DD & I will cope - either way

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 20/03/2014 07:30

Falling asleep - and the consequent calm - may actually have helped her. Cats can often recover very well from strokes (Seniorboy had a little one last year, I think, and shows almost no sign of it now) but I think you're well advised to still go to the vet if possible. I've always been worried with her as to what might be the underlying cause of the vestibular and the vet seeing her (especially after last night) is no bad thing.

Hope you and DD are OK this morning. You're being very staunch there.

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 08:02

DD hoped she would have died in her sleep Sad

She still can't walk but she can stand

cozietoesie · 20/03/2014 08:28

That's understandable, actually. Having to make the hard decisions is a big ask when you're younger. (Actually, it's a big ask at any age, really.) How old is she again?

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 09:11

16 - so hormonal irrational teenager! Just old enough to properly understand & not old enough to deal

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 20/03/2014 09:39

Yes - you're going to have to shoulder the responsibility for this one I'm afraid.

Take care - I'm sure many people on this board will be thinking about you today.

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 10:27

They saw her & she's gone

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 20/03/2014 10:42

She went with much love.

Are you thinking of ways to remember her or is it just too soon at this moment?

crazynanna · 20/03/2014 10:45

So sorry Katy Sad
Much love to you and DD

Blithereens · 20/03/2014 10:48

I'm so sorry Katy. Thinking you you and DD x

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 10:58

Thanks

Thinking of you & your daughter Sad

KatyMac · 20/03/2014 22:21

Thank you - it's been a hard day

The vet was in no doubt we were doing the right thing - the cat kept doing the splits.....it did not look comfortable & she felt it was almost certainly a brain thing rather than an ear thing

OP posts:
KatyMac · 22/03/2014 07:10

I've packed away all her bits (into my mum's garage) - DH threw everything away when our last cat died & we had to buy everything new

He & DD are insistent they do not want another cat; I have pointed out that while now is not the right time to discuss it, being catless longterm is not an option.

I think I'd rather have a cat & no DH than a DH & no cat Wink

Let it lie for a little. People think and say these things in the immediate aftermath of a death (and mean it at the time) but she'll have left a huge hole in the family - and who knows what may turn up in the next few weeks or months. You could be Dudleyed or something.

How are you doing yourself?

KatyMac · 22/03/2014 07:35

I'm OK - she had a nice life here, the last 6 months were a bit rough but I know we tried our best (maybe even a bit too hard)

We need Siamese or Oriental shorthair because of allergies, so one 'turning up' is unlikely but when it's time we will start with shelters
