My cat Whisky was 17 and a half and I had to put her to sleep this morning, it was not a difficult decision but it's a difficult day...We had been together for more than half of my adult life, long before husband, children...feeling very sad

Im sorry about Whisky, Its the worst thing in the world, keep something of hers to keep in the house maybe xxx

CuntyBunty · 18/01/2014 14:24

Aw, so sorry to hear that, TheDudes. I wanted a cat all my adult life and got my Sausage for my 40th. I've only had him a year and a half and don't know what is do without him.

I hope your DH is being sympathetic. Nice big glass of wine and a good cry. It must really hurt.

SunshineOnACrappyDay · 18/01/2014 14:36

I'm so sorry OP. Big hugs Flowers

I lost my 19 year old in October. You put it very well when you said it wasn't a difficult decision, but a difficult day.

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 18/01/2014 14:42

Poor whiskey and poor you. Sounds like you knew it was absolutely best for her... I'm glad you were able to give her a peaceful end. She was very lucky to have you.

theDudesmummy · 18/01/2014 14:45

Thanks. The vet did say that she must have been well looked after and happy to have lived this long. We have had to really look after her a lot the last year, heating pads, warm jackets etc...She looked so thin and ill at the end, not like the gorgeous furry Maine Coon I knew....

I am so sorry. It sounds like she had a wonderful life with you and that you gave her a kind and peaceful end. Xx

theDudesmummy · 18/01/2014 16:04

I was holding her when she went and she purred till the end despite being so sick...

cozietoesie · 18/01/2014 16:56

So sorry, theDudes. It was the final loving thing to do for her - although it must surely have been a difficult day today without her.

Mintyy · 18/01/2014 16:59

Aww condolences! She was a lucky cat indeed. I really feel for you.

theDudesmummy · 18/01/2014 17:14

Now is the time she woould normally be annoying us all miaowing for her supper...it is so quiet...

Mintyy · 18/01/2014 17:17

Do you feel like putting up a picture?

theDudesmummy · 18/01/2014 17:43

Can you tell me how I put up a picture and I will

Sad So sorry to hear about Whisky, I had to have my 18 yr old cat put to sleep in September and although it was the right decision it was very upsetting (and still is) - take care of yourself Thanks

For photos - go to "My Mumsnet" (at top right of this page) then "my photos" and there are instructions on how to upload a pic, I am usually hopeless at this sort of thing but it was pretty straightforward on here

CarmonEileen · 18/01/2014 22:06

So sorry Thedudes. It's awful.
My beautiful 2 year old passed away during the night on tuesdaySad
He was fine on Sunday, Monday pm seemed a little bit off it and when I came downstairs Tuesday morning he'd gone. I am beyond devastated, Dd is absolutely heartbroken. Sad Sad

They leave a huge hole in your life and heart when they go.

theDudesmummy · 19/01/2014 12:13

I have managed to load a pic to my profile now! It is a collage of her that I have also put on my Facebook page. The writing n the pic may be a bit too small to see in this format but it says:

Legato Mannhattan Sunrise (that was her pedigree name)
3 June 1996-18 Jan 2014

My DH has had much more of a reaction that I imagined. When she was alive he spent plenty of time saying what a nuisance she was (while also being very kind to her, building her a special bed when she got old etc..). But he cried yesterday even more than I did. And last night he said he could not go downstairs last thing as he always does, to make me a cup of tea for bed, as he could not bear how empty and quiet the kitchen was!

JonSnowKnowsNothing · 19/01/2014 12:24

Oh that's so bloody sad! :-( it's unreal how much pets can get to you, isn't it? Looked at the picture, she was a monster kitty - was she a Maine Coone?

cozietoesie · 19/01/2014 12:27

What a great cat. Wonderful eyes!

theDudesmummy · 19/01/2014 12:28

Yes she was a Maine Coon with a great pedigree, her father was quite famous in his day! She was however actually very small for a Maine Coon (the runt of a litter of eleven!), but until the last couple of years her amazing coat always made her look like a big cat! Her tail, in her heyday, was really something, and you could really see why the Maine Coon is sometimes called "the tail with a cat attached".

OP posts:
theDudesmummy · 19/01/2014 12:29

She had a problem that plagues a lot of Maine Coons, a heart condition, and I was told many years ago that she would not get old! Hah! We looked after her well, she made it to 17 and a half, and in the end it was her kidneys and not her heart that gave up.

cozietoesie · 19/01/2014 12:32

You can't tell. Darling Oneago seemed healthy as healthy and fell over dead one morning at only 8 years old.

She really was a beauty.

theDudesmummy · 19/01/2014 13:23

Yes, I always thought would happen to Whisky! But she really hung in there! I think the fact that she was so small and skinny was in her favour.
