Birman cat

Disclaimer that it is not mine Grin
She follows me everywhere, I mean to the shop (then sits outside and waits for me), to the car (then tries to get in the car)
Comes in the window and follows me round the house yowling. Won't let any other cat near me and hissed/spat at a neighbours cat yesterday that came over for a stroke
Is this normal for a Birman?! I mean, I just don't get why she yowls at me all the time. I don't speak cat and I'm sure she's thinking "stupid human" Confused

Her coat already looks a bit better, I think.

I've had boys trying to 'eat' the brush as well. I think that the feel of hard bristles against teeth may be satisfying in the manner of scratching an itch so if you ever get her to the vet (I'm not going there) then having a look at teeth might be a good thing. (They don't seem to do it as much, if at all, when teeth are tickety boo.)

Anyway - the way I've found to handle that is to incorporate a 'tooth moment' at the end of the groom so that they know it's coming as part of the ritual. Hold the brush rigidly at an angle towards her but near-horizontal so that she can get at the bristles with one side of the mouth (you'll see what I mean when you try it) and then reverse the angle so that she can get at it with the other side of her mouth. Think tooth brushing angles.

I hate to mention the F word given that she's not officially your cat (although what the heck a Birman is doing out and about at 5 in the morning is anyone's guess) but has she asked for food yet?

EMUZ · 14/06/2013 14:03

I still can't believe she actually woke me Grin
She hasn't asked for food as such, I've eaten and she just sits there doesn't pester or anything
She has a dreamie when she goes back outside
Tried to weigh her and she won't fit on the scales. Can feel her hips and shoulder blades (if that's the right word)

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 14/06/2013 14:09

Get on the scales by yourself - and weigh.

Get on the scales holding her - and weigh.

Subtract.

Smile

It rather depends on how accurate your scales are but should give you a decent idea.

EMUZ · 14/06/2013 14:12

I did think about that. They're not digital so won't be great but I shall give it a go Smile
Little madam, she knew I would wake up. Opened the window and she came running from my door

She is absolutely beautiful!

As others have said, tis worrying she's being allowed to wander & is shut out (esp given they're meant to be indoor cats). You said that she appeared when new people moved in: is there any chance that actually she appeared when the last people moved out, as it were Sad?

From the vidclips I'd guess she's used to being brush but hadn't been brushed for quite a while until you did it.

If you can't get to speak to the supposed owners to confirm she really is theirs (& if she is, hopefully make them reconsider how they look after her) I really do think you should maybe take her to the vet so they can check for a chip. You are being splendid in terms of your No Accidental Catnapping approach but it might be as well to get things clear asap? If only so you and the cat can plan how to enable her to move in without causing tension with neighbours.

EMUZ · 15/06/2013 23:55

No she definitely is there's, have confirmed now with other neighbour but still not seen her humans. If that makes sense
She wasn't about yesterday but came in tonight and slept for 2 hours on me before I kicked her back out
I think maybe she just likes the peace?! Believe neighbours have children and my house is v quiet

P.s this was today. She always sleeps with one paw out so she can dig claws in if I move Confused

Aw, she's a darling. Am glad she's definitely got owners - just a pity they're not doing a better job of caring for her.

Wonder how long it'd take them to notice if The Cat moved in with you...

EMUZ · 16/06/2013 00:57

She is adorable. Had to keep checking she was breathing as she slept so deeply today Grin
I'm not a cat person, I don't like them. But I've had the worst year of my life and she seems to have appeared just as things got bad so... My friend says she's my guardian Smile

OP posts:
HansieMom · 16/06/2013 01:11

She might have been sleeping very deeply today if she was out all night and could not sleep for fear of what might get her.

crazydrunkevilhamster · 16/06/2013 01:18

She is gorgeous Envy

cozietoesie · 16/06/2013 08:09

I have to say, EMUZ, for someone who keeps protesting that they don't like cats, you're doing a remarkable job of bringing her into your house and looking after her!

Wink
EMUZ · 16/06/2013 17:34

I think she's part human Wink

She sure knows how to pose for a camera!

EMUZ · 17/06/2013 20:33

She's like the bloody cat that got the cream Wink
Very good at posing indeed

Her owners are not caring for Her properly. Have you talked to them? Maybe they will let you have her, they could have visiting rights. Actually I would ask to buy her if all else fails.

EMUZ · 18/06/2013 03:03

I haven't. The problem is I can't say directly they aren't looking after her. Sure she's outside but she does have a home and some people let their cats roam. No evidence she isn't being fed
I'm going to keep an eye on her and her weight (I weighed her and she was 7 or 8lbs)
I leave the window open when I'm awake so she wanders in and out as she pleases. Have a feeling she comes to me when her owners aren't home, or when they are asleep

OP posts:
HansieMom · 18/06/2013 14:42

Well she has a very good home away from home.

EMUZ · 18/06/2013 17:09

Oh she won't come to any harm if I have anything to do with it
(Unless she carries on waking me at 5am) Grin

OP posts:
ZebraOwl · 22/06/2013 15:02

She's not a cat who should be roaming though, is she... and letting cats out after dark is a contentious one regardless of breed!

Am so glad that she has you to look out for her Grin

EMUZ · 26/06/2013 23:09

Cat decided she had a new friend today and dragged teddy for a cuddle
