Two three year old cats, a boy and girl, who were abandoned but are now going to live with us and be spoilt rotten and who are already loved by us all. Everything is ready and I don't think I will be able to sleep tonight!!

Any tips would be welcome though I have bought a cat book and have been reading it.

just take each day as it comes let the cats come to you, and relax :) enjoy your new fur persons

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 17:20

Thank you. I think I am the most excited person in the house Grin.

nothing like expecting new cats in the house they sound lovely of course being here you will have to put pics up on your profile for everyone to drool over

bisley · 30/05/2013 17:23

Awwww, dd1 has been asking for a cat recently (and a dog, but that's v unlikely). It's hard because I really want one too! But it's just not practical for us at the moment. Have fun with them :)

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 17:33

They are so lovely. Described as timid and shy but that didn't last long with us! We visited them a few times on our own, the second time we took a blanket we had all cuddled, and then on our 4th visit we took the children and they were all over them and kissed dc3!!

Oh how exciting, best advice I can give is give them time to adjust to the new house and new owners, one cat we adopted lived behind a curtain for a week but once he relaxed he was so cuddly with us. You can buy plug in cat calmer defusers, they might help with the adjustment.

TigerSwallowTail · 30/05/2013 17:39

And if you have carpet then I recommend the scratch mats that lie on the floor - your carpet will be very grateful!

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 17:44

We have bought a scratching post so hopefully they will like it.

How lovely, it sounds like you've passed the job interview.

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 17:47

Yes, they definitely picked us. They had been shy and timid until we spent some time with them.

cozietoesie · 30/05/2013 17:49

Have you given them names yet?

Smile
Wolfiefan · 30/05/2013 17:50

Do check what food they are on. Vet check needed? Jabs up to date? Microchip and enjoy!

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 18:03

We are keeping the names the rescue centre gave them as we have more than two children and I am not sure they would agree. We know them as their names so it is the easiest thing to keep the names as they are.

We have talked about food and have bought three different boxes and some biscuits. They were seen by a vet today so won't need another one immediately. Jabs up to date but we need to take them in a few weeks for the next lot I think. Have been micro-chipped by the centre.

Some kitten biscuits need softening with water before they can be eaten.

Fluffy cat used to give me a proper "wtf?" Look at his dry biscuits.

Took me ages to read the packet properly, good job he had canned food too.

MissStrawberry · 30/05/2013 21:36

They are on adult food but I am more than willing to water their biscuits if they want that. They have been eating biscuits fine at the rescue centre though.

We have two new furry children!

StrawberryBoyCat is more shy and is happy in the utility room with the odd trip into the kitchen. Has sat on StrawberryHumanBoy1 and Boy2's laps but ignored StrawberryHumanGirl who is very Sad.

StrawberryGirlCat is into everything and wants to be out exploring the rest of the house. She has been in the fridge, tried to get in the grill, has jumped onto the tall laundry basket, had a drink, some biscuits, a wee and some bread StrawberryHumanBoy2 dropped on the floor.

In other news StrawberryHumanGirl might be allergic.

Great to read about your new cats they sound like they have settled in already.
My daughter has allergies and sometimes our cats make her sniff, just keep the cats out of your daughters bedroom, give her a hayfever/allergy tablet and she will hopefully build up a resistance to the cats over time.

cozietoesie · 31/05/2013 16:26

StrawberryGirlCat sounds like a right handful.

What symptoms is DD showing ?

MissStrawberry · 31/05/2013 16:41

SBC has now eaten for the first time and had a drink.

DD had red under her eyes where she had rubbed them when crying. When we visited them SBC stood on her leg and it was red and itchy. Same today but SGC was the one near her I think.

Have given her some piriton.

Really hope they can stay though obviously concerned for DD.

Oh dear. Some other posters may be able to advise on allergy issues. It's not at all my strong suit, I'm afraid.

Ponders · 31/05/2013 17:51

my DD2 had a massive reaction to a friend's (very fluffy) kitten when she was 8 or so - she had cuddled it for a bit & her eyes swelled up so much they nearly closed. she had some eczema already so was bound to be a bit allergic.

she's grown up now - still has a bit of a reaction to new cats, but it subsides with a dose of piriton, so with luck strawberrygirl will be the same - fingers crossed!

MissStrawberry · 31/05/2013 19:57

I am so sad for her and worried too. Is it even possible we can't keep them?

She is still complaining about her eye but won't hold a damp flannel in place to stop the itching as she said it doesn't help. She has had Piriton.

Cats are chilling on the kitchen chairs. We will let them out into the lounge tomorrow.

It depends on the severity of the reaction, dh is allergic to our cat but no rescue centres take husbands and he had got used to the cat after about 3 weeks.

The important thing is that he washes her hands after touching the cats.

You could try petal cleanse wipes, they are meant to help.

MissStrawberry · 01/06/2013 10:52

Grin Ponders, I had to read it twice to get it!

We have ordered some wipes for the cat and are using Piriton and eye drops. She is happier today and chatting to the cats. I am really hoping it is mild but the pharmacist said it does sound like an allergy and they can just come out of nowhere.

Would I be a terrible mother to keep them??
